If what we’ve seen the last two weeks from the defense is the real deal, prepare to be bored with the second half offense on a regular basis as Richt happily shuts things down to control the game.
That being said, I’ll take seven more of those in a row without complaining.

Personally, I’d rather work up bigger leads, get some more reps for guys like Mason, Malcome, etc., and rest the starters whenever possible. But if I have to choose between a win like this and a loss, obviously I’ll take the win.

Our defense is playing incredible. I think we’re close to being on the level of Bama or LSU. With that kind of defense, we just need to stop throwing interceptions. I was happily bored today.

agreed – bama and lsu don’t have a Boise St. to their name yet (West Virginia may come close). Our D is great except for opening night. Our offense/sp teams gave away SC, which really hurts, but Auburn helped out today. Grantham is proving to be a really good move by our program and Richt. I don’t mind “shut-down” when it is 21-3, but when we are up by 7 or 10, that is a different story. I would rather teach Murray how to take a sack and to not throw pick sixes. Good job today.

Oh, and our D did collapse late against SC too. Still, they have shown real improvement last year and this year. While not hard to improve on a Willie-coached defense, we have looked pretty good late. If it continues against the Vols, we’ll have momentum going into Jville.

Last two weeks remind me of the 1982 Herschel/Lastinger team, which (according to Larry Munson) didn’t put anybody away until they got to Jacksonville. That team won ugly a lot, played some boring games, but the defense was strong.
I’ll take a couple more of the same, on the road, next two weeks.

Watching this offense makes me want to punch a basket full of kittens sometimes. There is real firepower there, and we’ll march up and down the field….and then score 24 points. We should have hung 45 on MSU today.
Don’t get me wrong, I love our defense, but goddammit, can we score some TDs in the second half?

We will NOT beat the better teams on our schedule by playing offense like we did in the second half. I have to go back to when Ray Goff was coaching to find an offensive performance that pathetic and inept. Completely and utterly inept.
Yeah, we won. Should have won, better team in every way. Some of you look at the results and say “I’m satisfied with the win”; others (myself included) watch the game and say “we have so much potential yet continually fail to reach it”.

Judging by the Tennessee game last season, “statement” games don’t mean shit in the long run. Winning games does, and the winning recipe for CMR in the past has been suffocating defense and adequate offense. That’s what he’s riding right now. I am just baffled by our fanbase’s response to the last couple of games. We just completely dominated our last two SEC opponents with neither game even being in question, despite the score. We have our first smell of momentum, no matter how feint, in a few years, and we’re pissed because we didn’t score one or two more times in games that weren’t even in question.

your little strategy is great against 2nd class programs like MSU. Unfortunately, it does not work against 1st class programs like Florida and the most recent ten top 25 teams we have played and have gone 1-9 against.

Gee, I could have sworn the playbook wasn’t so much the issue on the f-ed up field goal, the dropped pick-6 by Boykin, and the 72-yard int by State. Oh, an on that field goal…You don’t go for it on 4th and half a yard from the 5 yard line when our defense has barely allowed a first down since the first drive? Strikes me as just stupid. Even if you don’t get it they start on their own 5. How is that the playbook?
The defense was great today. Perhaps soon we get through a whole game without a special teams mistake that costs us points.
Regardless what happens this year this team has a lot of good players. I really like our chances next year and CTG has really got the defense breathing fire again. Wins are nice!

We didn’t go for it on 4th down because MSU had just stuffed us on 3rd and short. Also, you had to consider a field goal almost automatic from that close in. Even with the miss, MSU still started inside their 20.

It worked against first class programs circa 2002-2005. The most recent top 25 teams we played did not face a stout defense.

I agree, but yesterday’s 2nd half was more than taking our foot off the pedal. We looked listless, asleep, pitiful, etc.

It was a combination of both. We didn’t really want to score a ton. But MSU also put 9 in the box and dared Murray to beat them. After throwing 3 picks, we were reluctant to let him air it out, so we just traded punts until time ran out.

Jax, the point is we CAN be that way and beat those teams. We have before. We were the premier team in the SEC for a few years with that recipe. Hell, the premier team righ now, Alabama, used that formula against your first tier Florida Saturday night. The difference between our final result and Bama’s was they have Richardson and we have a young and out of shape Crowell. While Crowell is good (in spurts), Richardson is Heisman worthy, so they put up a few more 2nd half points. But the formula was the same. And we both got the same stat: one win. I agree with you 100% we took our foot of the gas pedal. The difference is I don’t have a problem with it. you look at it like we didn’t “go for the throat.” I say we did by playing to our obvious strength, which on Saturday was field position and defense. We took the ball out of the offense’s hands and put it into the defense’s.
Side note: I probably would have gone for the 4th and short late BECAUSE the defense was playing so well. But then I am not the coach, nor was I even in consideration to be named the coach. I don’t have a problem with Richt taking an almost guaranteed 3 to go up by 3 TD’s (again, considering how well the defense was playing). I may not have agreed with the call, but I didn’t necessarily disagree with it either, if that’s possible.
I spent my college years watching average offenses led by Greene (or better yet, led by Billy Bennett) supplement above average defenses, an that worked out pretty well for us. I’m happy to go back down that road again.

They may have a wrinkle or two to add against opponents, but they run the same power, trap, toss, play-action, screens, etc. every game. That is what they do, and as long as they do it well, they succeed. There aren’t missing pages of the playbook. And, if what you did in the first half is already on tape, then why not continue it in the second half? We won, that’s all fine and dandy. I’m grateful for the win but unsatisfied, which I hope is how the team feels… But you have to ask yourself… What sense does that offensive logic make? I have a hard time agreeing with that mentality. If they’re trying to score on you, return the favor. Being conservative doesn’t allow for backups to get much needed playing time, votes for the top 25 or maintaining rhythm with your starters. It’s just beyond me…

That was a damn good win and the defense looked especially awesome. But a two touchdown win is not what most people call utter domination and makes me wonder how much s#it u know about football.

For the second week in a row, the final score might not have looked like a dominating win, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t dominate. Put it another way: has anybody said that LSU didn’t dominate them? And they allowed them three more offensive points and scored five fewer on them.

We only had 6 possessions in the first half. 3 TD, 2 INT, 1 punt. The interceptions hurt because we likely would have scored at least one more TD in the first half. I like the fact that we scored TD’s in the red zone. Of course, that changed in the second half.

Senator, this is looking more like 01-05 by playing to the strength of the defense. Late in the game, Grantham was fine with giving up yards in exchange for time off the clock. Then, it was like he said to the defense, “That’s enough.”. Game over. They are definitely getting after people.

I didn’t expect so many picks, but I really did not expect him to match last year’s performance, and that’s simply because #8 was like a 50-mph wind assisting your shot off the tee.
You really cannot underestimate the impact of a guy who forces double-coverage downfield on every play…not to mention his size and hands managing to help AM’s completion percentage a fair bit.

That Amarlo Herrera is a fucking beast. Jarvis Jones is clearly the best player on the defense, but if John Jenkins and Herrera keep improving this much from week to week, the sky is the limit.
First test since Scu on Saturday in Knoxville. Was there 2 years ago, and it was the most embarrassed I have ever been as a UGA fan, and that is including the 2000 Gtu debacle. Let’s see how they play against a team with a pulse.

Mississippi State sucks, plain and simple. It’s a nice win. 3 INT’s, trick plays and punt returns for TD’s will lose the game this Saturday. I hope that all the dumbassness is out of their system and they flog the Vols, but I will believe it when I see it.

Mississippi State is now 0-3 in conference play, and struggled last week against Louisiana Tech. Are they Coastal Carolina? Certainly not. But it’s pretty clear now that they’re HARDLY the team everyone thought they were going into the season.
And the problem with Tennessee is that they’ve only played a single respectable opponent. And that game — a loss — wasn’t nearly as close as the score indicates. The Vols rushed for -9 yards against Florida. I’ll be happy if our defense can shut Bray down, but you certainly won’t hear me shouting “We’re back, baby!” if we happen to win in Knoxville. Our next opportunity for a respectable win, in my opinion, is Jacksonville.

I agree with you on all points. My response was to Cynical, but it was pointed more at the posters here and elsewhere who have been pointing all week to MSU as a respectable opponent, but now are back in “wait till we play a *real* respectable team,” seemingly only because we beat them. I don’t think we’re back yet, but I’m willing to give credit for two wins in which our SEC opponents were never really even in the game.

It’s becoming clear to me that the defensive staff really knows what they’re doing. This D is playing without it’s best player, the LB’s are generally inexperienced, and they’re killin’ it. The better offensives are coming down the road, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised with a unit that was a huge question mark coming into the season.
I wish Richt hadn’t waited so long to sweep Willie and the Poorboys out.

You are correct. MSU made adjustments at the half. If MSU had more athletes in key positions, they would have possibly came back to make it close due to our inept coaches. UGA came out flat at the start of the 2nd half. You could see it in their eyes and the way our players would take themselves out.
This all about coaching, motivation, and our coaching staff does not have killer instinct. I was listening on the radio to MR before the game. He said he was hoping to get a win, get back home before dark, and spend quality time with him family on Saturday evening. WTH?
Our defense has made big improvements however they have not shown they can stop a good running back when it counts and the game is on the line. Time will tell.
Did anyone notice Alabama showing the wildcat in the fourth quarter? This was for LSU to see and worry about. Keep them guessing and wondering. Take advantage in each situation with presented.
Again, the best coaching staffs make the necessary changes at half and also get the best out of each player. Alabama also had starters playing special teams. Some coaches know how to win, get better each week, and other coaches do just enough to keep their job.
UGA has the talent to play with anyone in the country, they just need to be properly coached…

Any ideas on why we are so vulnerable to bubble screens? Based on its execution against us (for numerous years) it’s wildly successful. Though I don’t recall us ever running it.
I’m not sure why MSU didn’t run it more as we were preventing the dive pretty well all day.

I agree with all of you about some of the struggles on offense but here is the thing, while Murray is on pace for 12 int’s he is also on pace for 36 td’s which would be the UGA record by 8. Those are both regular season projections. This year he just seems to be much more feast or famine. The good news is that last year if Murray played the way he did the last two weeks we lose those games for sure. This year we won them both in comfortable fashion. As for UT as good as their offense has looked at times I think we put Boykin/Sanders on Da’Rick with Rambo over the top, man up their other receivers and then commit everyone else to stopping the run and beating up on Bray. I think UT gears up to stop the run and Murray has his break out game of this season.

Aaron Murray you play like Garcia. Your INTs are right their wiht his numbers. You keep up throwing the ball away and your defense is going to take your little prissy butt to the woodshed. You need to mature and start playing like a SEC quarterback. You need to be concerned about your interceptions and lack of focus during games. It is becoming apparent you can not stay focused and lead this team an entire game. But you have a lot of help from your OC.
Frankly, you guys need to get on the bus at half time and go take a nap because know one knows what you guys do anymore after half time except stop playing. Down the road somebody is going to put a hob nail boot up your butt.
