I’ve never had the slightest bit of interest in Missouri. I was very in favor of adding A&M, but I’m not sure it is worth it if we have to take Mizzou.
Put the full-court press on Virginia Tech. Play 2012 with 13 teams, and if VPI stupidly won’t budge and for some reason wants to stay in the ACC, West Virginia will be there waiting.
Literally the only thing Mizzou brings is the academic angle. If we’re worried about that, we might as well just add Rice.

What do you mean, the academic angle? MIssouri is a middling school academically. Half the schools in the SEC are ranked better. Those twats bring KC and St. Louis (which WaVA does not, BTW), and that is ALL. One of the worst D1 athletic depts in the country historically.
Va Tech would be a better get than MU for smarts. Better get all the way around, actually, as you say.

Mizzou is an AAU institution. That’s a pretty big feather in their cap.
Anyway, I thought the same thing after reading it, but I don’t think you want to throw the baby out with the bath water. Mizzou has a real nice athletic program and big following in the central Midwest and have been playing football since 1890. It makes a lot of sense that they wanted to join the Big 10…there are a lot more natural connections b/w Mizzou and the Midwest…and Columbia is closer to Iowa City, Champaign, Bloomington, and Lincoln than any of the SEC campuses…I wouldn’t take their natural connection to the Big 1G as a slight to the SEC.

Why is UGA not a member of the AAU if it is so prestigious? Florida and Vandy are (no other SEC schools are). Georgia Tech is, as well. Seems logical to me that UGA should be a member, too.

Yeah, I had the same thought; but then “anonymous source” can temper the judgment. Still, MU pretty clearly wants into the B1G. They’re pretty much the opposite of A&M. I’d almost prefer WVU since it would restore balance to the divisions. One wonders if there’s any chance to pry away NC State or VA Tech?
I’d hate to see us lose UT-Bama and AU-LSU; but I’d also not like to see Bama and AU in the east.

i hate expansion for the sec. hate tamu. hate mu. hate wvu. i’d only be pleased to see two of the nc schools join the conference, and i guess that’s not in the cards.
has the sec forgotten that its geographical footprint already happens to embrace the region of the nation that is going to expand the most rapidly by population over the next quarter century? growth is already bulit in, and i’ve still not heard a convincing argument that this isn’t a case of fixing what ain’t broke. and i reject the assumption that slive knows what he’s doing.

My understanding (cobbled together from the one thing better than a single anonymous source: SEVERAL vaguely-sourced interwebs-based discussions!) is that the fans and “common folk” of Mizzou are all for the SEC and will be extremely excited. But a lot of the money just has a different self-image here. We should probably not get too upset about the blue bloods having their heads up their asses.

The Southeastern Conference is the best football conference in the country, and it’s among the leaders in every sport. We’re also strong academically, while admittedly not the strongest. We’re not your second choice. I truly don’t understand why we should want Missouri in the first place. I get that they add TV sets, but some of the other expansion options also add TV sets, so what’s the difference? They add absolutely zero athletically. Their football history is mediocre at best, their basketball program is about on par with a school like Georgia, and … what else? I reject the idea that we’re adding them for academics. That’s not considered by the league, only included in the press release after the fact. Screw Missouri. I didn’t want them to begin with, and if their desire to be in our league is simply “any port in a storm”, well, enjoy the Big 12 until it folds, guys. I’m sure Conference USA will be proud to have you.

Their basketball is not on par with UGA … more accurately we are not on par with them. They have 21 Big Dance appearances including 8 out of the last 13 years.
We have 11 apperances in our history.
With that said, could care less if they join the SEC.

Their basketball history is on par more with Alabama or Tennessee, so, yes, they’re better than we. But they add little…they have had virtually no championships in any sport and have rarely even appeared in bowls in football (though admittedly they’ve trended a little up under Pinkel).

I think that is changing. If we can keep Fox as HC of the basketball team look for good things from the Dawgs in the future. The trouble is historically whenever we get a coach who is a winner something happens and the program get set back. See Smith, Tubby; Harrick, Jim.

The higher-ups at Mizzou just don’t want to be cock-punched by the SEC on a regular basis. They can compete for championships in the B1G. They haven’t really done so in the Big XII, and they won’t really compete in the SEC either.

I love the double speak out of all these schools. We need to realign ourselves so we put our schools in the best future position financially. But, I don’t want to join that conference because of academics. Reminds me of something my father used to say, “Son, you can want in one hand, and (spit) in the other. Then see which one gets filled first.” Mizzou can keep their handful and walk right up to Delany and shake on it.

Who cares? If the Big10 does take Mizzou away from the SEC, there will likely be a major shift and UGA can pick up another team.
Va Tech please? They have regularly choked in big games, their tradition of being more than a mid major only lasts for this one coach, and even then what is his record against Top 10 teams. Va. Tech built they’re program taking kids of questionable character but since joining the ACC has cleaned up and choked even more often.
FSU is the prize, they have more tradition, keep the ACC from having a stadium to recruit the talent around the area, and gives the SEC a monoply on those TV sets.
The SEC does not come up against a regional powerhouse program from another conf when recruiting VA or MD. Mizzou gives the SEC even more presence in the Midwest win going up against OU or Texas.

Seems to me like this story is more of a ploy by folks who want Mizzou to remain in the B12. The Board of Curators voted unanimously to give Deaton the authority to explore conference membership options. Don’t be fooled by an anonymous source. I’m certainly biased as an alum, but I think Mizzou is a good addition for the SEC. Did Mizzou want in the B1G? Yes, but I don’t believe that was a good fit. Mizzou undoubtedly realizes that its best choice for stability and success is in the SEC. Looking forward to some new rivalries. Sláinte

Just because some bitchy English professor wanted CIC membership does not mean his/her opinion actually means anything in this process. I am extremely confident that if Mizzou ends up in the SEC, they’re done moving. That’s not to say that some academics wouldn’t be pissed off, but their decisions don’t count in this move. Mizzou wanted the B1G 16 months ago. The B1G passed. For a lot of people here, that was very much the end of the story.

I’d like to see UNC or UVA. Weird I know, but you get decent all around programs and some awesome academics. I’m thinking long term.
We have plenty of TOP schools to win games and titles. We need more followers.
Virginia and North Carolina are decent markets, in addition to gaining a little more presence towards the mid atlantic.

I’m trying to think about the SEC fanbase reaction to Arkansas & South Carolina’s addition back in 1992, if everyone had more internet back then.
Most interesting thing about that article? Tulane to the Big XII. Makes sense, if Texas and Oklahoma are setting up conference fodder out of the old name private schools. It also makes sense of talk around New Orleans about Tulane reinvesting in football, we’ve been hearing rumours about that for the past few years.

I love Tulane but it has an awful football program. Bob Toledo must like to punish himself. On the other hand, if he split, Tommy Bowden and Rich Rodriquez may be available for an encore performance.
