The Mike-Safety Blitz: Grantham GATA

Chris Low gets Grantham to break down one of his blitz calls. It’s a fun listen.

One possibility I have not yet heard mentioned is what happens if we end up with only 7 wins, but top 10 in total defense? Coordinators usually don’t stick around if the head coach goes, and who is going to fire a staff with that kind of defense when the offense will only be more mature along the line and all skill positions in 2012?

Dare I say, is it possible one of our coordinators is actually having a positive influence on Richt’s job security? What a novelty that would be.

    • If Georgia winds up with a top-10 defense, there will be more than 7 wins on the board at the end of the season.

One would think so, but we’re 3-2 right now and #7 (!) in total defense. At that clip, we get 7 wins out of the 12 game schedule. I do think it would require some pretty bad bounces to play out that way.

Gary Gibbs delivered a top 10 D in Donnan’s last season. He wasn’t retained. So we have precedent. For some reason our DC’s, like Erk, Gibbs, BVG and CTG, are held to a much higher standard than the offensive coaches.

7th in total defense. Think about that for a sec. We’re in the second year of a new system with key injuries and we’re a top 10 defense. That’s an pretty impressive statement on Grantham’s abilities.

Plus having played a Heisman candidate QB on a top 5 team and another (at the time) top 15 team. Obviously the other 3 games were against sub-par offenses, but still…it’s hard to not be impressed with the D, especially when you consider the offense hasn’t done them a ton of favors this season (except for some good TOP clock killing the last couple games).

With walkons and freshmen playing inside linebacker. Can’t wait to get Ogletree back for Florida.

Exactly. This is one of those stats that you can’t just dismiss by saying we’ve played a few weaker teams in a row. The fact that the defense has stoned them as thoroughly as they have is impressive.

This is a cool feature. I think the next time the Athletic Association does a fundraising auction with different “experiences” for sale, a huge money maker would be the ability to sit in on one of the staff meetings on a Monday or Tuesday morning of a game week. I’m sure that there’d have to be some way of assuring the staff that you’re not an enemy operative, and I kinda doubt they’d go for it, but that would be really cool to be a fly on that wall and to absorb some of that information. That idea has been rattling around in my head ever since I read the Feldman piece on WVU’s game week leading up to LSU.
