From hot seat to hot hire

Funny, but when I heard the news about Arizona firing Mike Stoops, I had this exact thought pass through my head:

… Imagine Byrne, frantically refreshing ESPN, waiting for news that Georgia has foolishly opted to fire Richt after the Bulldogs go 8-4 in the regular season – let’s say Georgia loses to Georgia Tech to end the regular season. How quickly does Arizona fire up the private jet to hire Richt? All the names on the list would quickly move to the background should he become available; they should, at least. If that came to pass, Georgia’s loss would be Arizona’s enormous gain.

I’m not saying McGarity wouldn’t necessarily be justified in making a move – at this point, who knows yet? – but I’d expect the media to turn on a dime and do a 180 if it happened.

And it sure as hell would mean that he’d have to make a home run hire for a replacement, or get crucified in the aftermath.

Are you advocating firing Richt and hiring Mike Stoops? Why in the world would you do that?

It sound an awful lot like the talk after Ole Miss fired Cuttcliff. A lesser program firing a successful HC. Great, now we are Ole Miss! No, CMR is not the best UGA has ever had at the position. Yes, he has brought success to the program. The comments over the past few months/years sound very similar to those made during the Donnan era: Tons of talent up and down the sideline, but the wins are simply not there. RIght now UGA is back to 2000 (one could make an arguement that it is worse than the 2000 season). Look at it in 5 year segments: 2001-2005 were vey good. 2006-2010 were awful (yes awful 2006=9-4 2007-11-2 2008-10-3 2009 8-5 2010 6-7). Can this program achieve more? Yes! And they should.

Jeebus, if a 5 year stretch has 44 wins and 20 losses is awful, we will never be happy. Think back to the early 90’s now that was awful.

The issue isn’t what happened in 2006-10. It’s what we can expect to happen this year and next. If Richt can’t make the case he’s the guy to get things back to where they were during his first five years, then he won’t be here. That’s the whole story.

As for your dramatic conclusion, I doubt anyone would argue. But it begs the question of whether McGarity can identify the man who can pull that off. That’s the $64,000 question.

It is a tad on the dramatic side, but not too far off. Like everyone that has posted on this great site, I want what is best for our university. I have faith that McGarity will make the best decision on behalf of our university. That is why he is in that position and I am not.

You are right. 2007 unto itself was a good year. Minus the UT loss and the SC loss. However, the 5 year span from 2006-2010 was not good as a whole. If 2007 were the norm, we would not be in this current situation.

I agree that, if 2007 were the norm, we would be in better shape. That really goes without saying. Although, I’m not sure finishing in the top 2 in the country every year would necessarily appease you. I mean, why can’t we win the national championship every year? We’re Georgia!!!1!!1!

If Georgia continues to improve like we’ve seen in the last 4 games, with a very good defense and an offense that starts to hum as the season wears on, then it would be foolish to fire Richt. He’s hired Grantham, which looks like a brilliant move more and more every week. He’s brought in instant playmakers. Georgia draws top quarterback talent from all over the place. And most importantly, he keeps UGA out of trouble with the NCAA.

Richt’s learned a lot coaching here, I can see him leaving and being very successful. I think one of the legit knocks on Richt in the beginning was the concern that who’s too nice a guy to make the personnel moves a CEO has to make sometimes for the good of the team, I think he’s learned that lesson, if you can fire the best man at your wedding you can fire anybody who’s not getting the job done. I don’t think he’ll have that problem in the future. The apparent resurgence of the defense under Grantham in recent weeks I guarantee you has driven that point home harder than anything, he knows as much as anybody that he kept Willy Mo around as DC way too long.

A friend and I discussed this a few months back. If Richt were to get fired, he would be a better coach for it. He would never let personal relationship get in the way of on field performance and he would be a little quicker in is descisions.

I think a similar argument can be made for Bobo. I think he could be very good OC if he were to leave and get some time coaching under another HC or even as a QB coach under an OC. The experince would only benefit him and his style of play calling and game planning. Let him spend a year as QB coach for Leach, Holgorsen, or even Saban. Learn their approach to the game, use of personel, and game planning would all be helpful to a coach willing to adapt and change. I don’t think Bobo has ever been anywhere other than at UGA?

      • Hackerdog

Richt has already learned the lesson. He was reluctant to get rid of Martinez and Van Halenger, but he did it. Firing him wouldn’t affect the timeline of his decisions.

As for Bobo, he’s already an excellent QB coach. And Saban isn’t known for turning out top-notch QBs. Bobo is. I agree that he could improve as an OC, and that might happen studying under a top-flight OC. But he’s already a damn fine QB coach. And he did coach QBs at Jacksonville State in 2000.

I’m with you man, I’ve said before, a lot of our fans are fixated on Bobo because the poor bastard has had to score almost every time his offense got the ball these last few years to have a chance to win. He’s already a good OC, he’s better than Richt was at it, can he improve sure, but if you mismatch the 01-05 defense with the 06-10 offense or vice versa our memories of a lot of offensive players and playcallers would be a whole lot different, David Greene, Fred Gibson, Musa Smith, those guys wouldn’t be remembered as fondly if they hadn’t have had David Pollock, Thomas Davis, and Boss Bailey. It shudders me to think what Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno, A.J. Green and the like could have done with those guys. Understand, I’m not saying Greene, Gibson, and Musa weren’t good but the thing truly missing from 01-05 to 06-10 was defense not offense. Hell, the ginga ninja could throw a deep ball as good as anybody, he might not of been so coxian had he not been so pressured to score to keep up with our the points Willy Mo’s charges hemoragged to opposing offenses.

a little off topic, but this is the 2nd reference i have seen the last couple of days that suggest it is a foregone conclusion that we lose to the nerds to close out the regular season. the nerds appear to have a good team, but we stack up well against them and don’t forget that florida:georgia is the same as georgia:georgia tech

I don’t think we are any more likely to lose to them than we were the last ten years. that isn’t to guarantee a victory, but I see no reason we shouldn’t win other than the lack of an off week to prepare for their offense.

The only way we need to retain Mark Richt after this season is if we do all of the following: (1) Finish 13-0, (2) Beat Florida by 30 points, (3) Beat the SEC West Champion by 50+ points, (4) Win the National Championship by 20+ points, (5) Haul in the #1 Recruit at every position. Unless we accomplish all five of these realistic, measurable benchmarks, McGarity will have no choice but to FIRE MARK RICHT!!!!!!1!!

And if Richt were to be without a job suddenly, he would be the first choice for any opening that he wanted. He’d have a new job before Georgia had his replacement. Times are a little tough right now, but you can already see Georgia beginning to reap the fruit of the seeds Richt has been sowing to get this team back to prominence. McGarity’s smarter than the Dawg Venters and the Dennis Dodds and Russ Mitchells of the world. Mark Richt will be the head coach in 2012.

First UGA has not shown anything yet. They are winning games they should win. The season is still coming down to Aub, and UF. I will not view the season as a success if UGA backdoors into a SECCG due to not facing LSU, Bama or Ark. S&C was still missing for the first 2 games of the season. Bobo still needs the big play to win a game.

Az’s AD Byrne was the AD that hired Mullen at Ms. St, and would likely make a run at hiring him again. Yes Mullen is high on my list to be the next HC at UGA.

Then you, Otto, with all due respect, are out of your mind. That mickey mouse offense of Mullen’s is never going to get great recruits and it’s not what you run at top level programs. It worked at Florida because of the talent Meyer brought in and Tebow. But, over the long haul it just doesn’t work. As soon as kids start to see that it’s not an avenue to the NFL, they don’t want to be a part of it.

Timmy is starting in Denver, but he still can’t take a dadgum snap under center, and thats a problem. Mullen also just got boat-raced by Richt and has yet to beat an SEC West team that’s worth a flip.

I do not expect to see SEC titles every year but I do want to see that uses the talent given in the best possible way rather than forcing a game plan on the talent you have. Georgia has a great freshman running back and a great freshman receiver. Georgia gives those guys the ball. They do stuff with the ball. Georgia also has some other guys, like some TEs and stuff. They get the ball sometimes too, and do stuff with the ball sometimes too.

This is a step in the right direction, and since we are doing it with defense is a second step in the right direction. If we can win 2 of 3 from AU, UF, GT i’ll be happy. If we make it to the SECCG, i’ll be celebrating with some Blue Label.

Otto, the argument can certainly be made that UGA has improved simply by winning the games that they should win. That didn’t happen last year, for sure.

You seem to be one of the fans who had their mind made up about Richt before the season began, and that’s certainly your right. However, your thinking is certainly not in line with the thinking of the people running the program. If you think that the season that ends in a trip to the SEC Championship Game wasn’t a success, then there’s not going to be any pleasing you. Georgia isn’t going to go unbeaten and win national championships every year. It wasn’t going to happen this year on a team so heavily reliant on freshmen, and if you thought it was, you’re delusional. Cheer for the Dawgs all you want, but you may be a lot happier picking up allegiance to a New York NFL team, where things turn a lot more quickly on crazy whims of unreasonable fans.

And also, the reason everyone’s so high on Mullen to begin with is the season they had last year… a season in which he beat up on the weak SEC East and didn’t beat a single one of the power teams in the SEC West… which seems to be the exact thing that mental giant Otto is banging on Richt for. So, clue in, Otto. Mullen’s resume isn’t that much different than Richt’s over the past couple of years… and it doesn’t have any SEC Championships as a head coach. And, since many people have decided to devalue Corch Meyers based on the fact that he didn’t really do much in Year 1 AT (After Tebow), let’s keep in mind that all of Mullen’s successes at Florida as a coordinator came WITH Tebow. Is he going to come play at Georgia if we hire Mullen?

Our Coach had brought this team back from an 0-2 start. Both UF and AU are mediocre teams at best this year. This weekend’s matchup between them will tell us alot about each of them. Out defense is definately better than both. I honestly don’t see us losing to either of these teams this year. I see 2 loss teams ranked and wonder why we aren’t considered. These teams should be looking at us on their radar and thinking of an L not the other way around. The reason we have been in this loosing streak over the past few years is because of 8-4 thinkers instead of 10-2 thinkers. Let’s stay positive folks and give the team our support.

Has anyone looked at our depth chart and realized what we will have coming back next year?

Offense: 17 (16) of 22 in the two deep (assumes Orson leaves) including 7 of 11 starters.

Defense: 20 of 22 in the two deep (assuming no early entries) with 9 of 11 starters returning. Not to mention the new found depth at linebacker and the defensive back recruits that have impressed so far on campus.

This team has the potential to be really good the next couple of years and barring a complete let down in the second half I don’t see any reason to let Mark Richt go. Would a new coach keep CTG? The only ones who have any sort of talent edge would be Clemson and georgie, and maybe Miami. But then, Paul Johnson is a much better coach than Yabo-Dabo-Doo Swinney, Mark “King-of-the-Hot-Seat-Hill” Richt, and friggin’ Al Golden. Hell, he’s better than Beamer and whoever coaches the other two as well.

I suppose losing two years in a row to the worst two Georgia teams of the last fifteen years, with one of those losses coming with the best Tech team of the last 20 years getting beat at its own game, qualifies you as a better coach to the nerds. Amazing what the coach that got you the one hit out of ten tries will do for that fanbase.

+1. How silly is wanting to fire any HC, much less one that has a career winning percentage of damn near 75% for going 9-3 in the regular season because he didn’t beat one or two teams you personally wanted him to beat? Mostly we have smart people on this blog but I guess we have to have the occasional moron, too.

LOL!! Reminds me of a bunch of sign carriers dressed in sheets on a corner in Iraq. Story goes(although I didn’t believe it) that these pro-Saddam people wanted their protest signs in English so their message would go international and they turned to an American Sgt that they had befriended for advice. So here they were on a street corner with their signs that read(License taken on quotes):

“Drop one here” with arrow pointing to holder.
“Shock and Awe us outta here”
                  “Drop the big one”
                  “Bomb Saddam”

Not exact, but you get the idea. They must have had 20 signs. I suspect that someone photo-shopped the banners along with the story, but the details were really good in the photos.

Hey just 2 years ago he beat tech who won the ACC, are you saying they were not ranked?

That is not possible. So your premise is false to start with.

McGarity said this week he wasn’t impressed with Richt’s wins over cupcakes recently. Andf he’ll judge Richt by how he finishes. That means 9-3 with some big wins over good teams, and a win over Florida or say bye bye. If Richt goes 2-9 against his biggest rival, he doesn’t deserve to keep his job.

Sorry Joe, but you can’t say for sure that the record against UF is the deciding factor. There are many factors to consider in firing and hiring a head coach and a laser beam focus on a record against a rival is short sighted… granted its not pretty and it will be the last straw if the natives are too restless but again… What if we lose to UF and play in the SECCG anyway, and find a way to beat AL or LSU? would that not trump a 2-9 record against FLA? along with an immensely young and talented team including a Keith Marshall coming our way next year…

No disrespect, Joe, but that’s not what McGarity said. You’re reading in what you want to read in what was a very politically correct non-statement from the athletic director. I’m going to go ahead and assume, with respect, that you’re not one of the money people who has McGarity’s ear. With that assumption in mind, I don’t consider you an expert on what Richt needs to do to be the head coach at Georgia. So, I’m not really taking your statements seriously about what he has to do or “he’s gone.”

    Prediction:
    Dawgs go 10-4
lose to UF and lose in SECCG
win bowl game-probably Capital One Bowl
    Richt keeps his job

That doesn’t get him into the top 25, so he’ll be fired. Voters havn’t moved UGA into the top 25 yet, despite 4 wins in a row. And they won’t, until Richt beats 2 ranked teams, and Florida.

        10 wins wouldn’t get Georgia ranked? C’mon.

Well, Joe, it looks like you can cheer for McGarity to do what you desire, but he will hear from a lot of alums before he makes a decision and I’ll bet you that he won’t get many telegrams from those who feel as you do. Tough road you have created to follow. Don’t see where it gets you except for the enmity of many of us who like Richt as the coach of UGA. He has already won his place in history here and I don’t see it ending in any time frame you desire.

Bottom line is that McGarity will decide. And I’ll bet you that the Regents and T. Lawhorne will agree with whatever he does, not the other way around.

Richt would be a hot hire but that doesn’t mean firing him is a bad thing. Sometimes it’s just time for a coach to move on. Richt being a good fire for Georgia and a good hire for some other team aren’t mutually exclusive.

    • Like I said, that’s all fine… as long as Georgia’s next hire kicks ass.

And thumbs where the analysis go awry. Nobody can point to the guy who would turn it around. UT pulled the trigger and got kiffin. Are they really better off w/o fulmer? Auburn pushed tubs out and but for Cam I’m guessing that would not be looking like a great trade either. Fisher is losing to wake forest and the naysayers possible replacements are losing to June jones and struggling to beat uab. You dont fire a guy because you are dissatisfied. You fire him when you have no other choice. Sticking with CMR through the tough times gives recruits even more reason to believe that they won’t be going through a coaching change during their college career.

Are you all out of your friggin gourds!?

It would be the greatest mistake in the 120-year history of the program. Thank God none of you have that power.

        • Whoa, hoss, I’m not speaking favorably or unfavorably about Richt being fired.

I’m just pointing out what the likely media reaction will be and what kind of rock will fall on McGarity if he pulls the trigger and blows the choice on Richt’s replacement.

Tick- Get unemplanted and smell the tea leaves. Reversing your numbers would be more accurate. Lot more positive even when it was 65 and it’s now 96. This blog is more about keeping Richt.

I never said it was the time. At this point, I personally think this team has some serious potential next year and that potential can only be hurt by a head-coaching change. Now if this time next year we’ve completely urinated away two games while looking like a decent team otherwise, then I’ll jump right on the Fire Richt bandwagon. I only wanted to point out that there exists a scenario where Georgia fires Richt, Arizona hires Richt, and everyone is happy.

Bluto, I can’t directly reply because I’m on my phone, but what if 10-2 doesn’t? Or what if 8-4 did?

All I’m saying is I see a lot of Disneys throwing our “re-emergence” around like we’re one season away from greatness again. But that’s the same song we’ve been singing since ’02.

It seems like with some folks it’s always “look at our ______ next year! We’re going all the way!”. Then the next year rolls around and some new hot shot shows up against us and we’re left holding the bag. Again.

Winning by a hair might be a W, but eventually hairs get trimmed. And you can’t rely primarily on your defense all the time, because one Saturday, or more they aren’t going to be able to live up to the challenge.

I don’t want Richt to get fired. But something’s got to be done. Maybe it’ll all turn around after this season, and the ship will right itself. But I’m not holding my breath after our first two games and the last 4 seasons. Maybe it’s Bobo for me. I don’t know. I do know that if Richt is going to be Mr. Pacifist(sp?), then he needs two fire breathers by his side. Kind of a mom and dad type thing. He’s got Grantham, sooo…

Obviously, there are no guarantees in life, but as a general rule of thumb, I’ll take my chances with two less conference losses.
