Mike Huguenin has a series of impressive facts about LSU:
LSU is playing its third consecutive game while ranked No. 1 in the nation, the first time that has happened since the 1959 season. LSU is 16-3 all-time in games played as the nation’s top-ranked team, which includes a 4-2 mark under Les Miles.
Those two losses under Miles were both in triple-overtime games in 2007. And LSU still wound up winning the MNC that season.
LSU has won seven consecutive games by double digits, one shy of tying the school-record streak set in 1936.
That streak includes wins over five ranked opponents.
LSU hasn’t trailed since the second quarter of the season-opener against Oregon.
That covers games with three ranked opponents. All in all, it’s a pretty good case for why the Tigers are ranked #1.
Get The Picture 
Senator, it’s clear that LSU is the nation’s best team if you purely look at the resume. I still think the Tigers and the Tide are 1a and 1b. I’m waiting to see which one blinks when their quarterback has to step up and win a game with the passing game.

I believe Alabama/LSU will be the classic “punting is winning” type game determined by field position and special teams.

I never thought I’d see the day that I would consider Les Miles a better coach than CMR, but it seems to be true without a doubt. Either that or his coordinators and assistant coaches are just really really good. I realize they always have a lot of talent since Louisana produces good D1 talent and LSU has the in-state recruiting on lockdown but the dude eats grass for chrissakes…

I wouldn’t go as far to say without a doubt Eric. I live in Baton Rouge so I get to deal with the LSU environment everyday. LSU fans hate Miles but put up with him because the team wins. I hear Miles on the radio all the time and this guy has one foot in the asylum. After they almost let UT beat them last year I thought the locals here were going to burn his house down. His first NC was with Nick Sabans talent, his second was in 07′ when LSU was 10-2 sitting in 6th place after they got throttled by Arkansas. Everyone infront of us lost on championship weekend when we were sitting in 4th place. Half the teams in the SEC could have beat OSU that year for the NC. Miles success is directly reflected on the fact that they have a lockdown on the state. Every kid in La. grows up hating Alabama, Auburn, and expecially Arkansas. They all want to play for LSU. LSU is all these people have down here, I have never seen a fan base quite like it.

I’d hardly call the Arky loss throttling. It was in triple OT and Matt Flynn got picked on the two-point conversion to extend the game to a fourth one. McFadden had one of his insanely great games and the Hogs needed every inch of it.

My bad, wrong adjective. I had LSU fans telling me all the time back in 07′ that they were so happy that they didn’t have to play UGA for the SECCG. It was like a shot in the nuts everytime I heard it.

watching the kentucky vs UT game that went into triple OT that clinched the east for UT was like a triple shot in the nuts…….. most painful game i’ve ever watched in my life that didnt involve uga…

Sure you can. Remember the ball bouncing off the Kentucky defender and into the LSU player’s hands for a td on the last gasp Hail Mary thrown by LSU? The K players had already doused their coach and were running onto the field in celebration. Sad.
You can count on one or both to hand the game to unworthy recipients.

I believe that LSU wins in spite of, not because of, les miles. Other than Texas, LSU might be the easiest place to recruit in the country. And nowhere seems to have the never ending supply of quick behemoth defensive lineman like Louisiana has.

That and the fact that they are, year in and year out, the luckiest team I have ever watched. I realize that they have great talent every year, but I’ve never seen a team on the right side of more calls and bounces than LSU. The football gods love them.

Not that it would have mattered, but case in point: your boys will be facing a team forced to start their backup QB for the second week in a row. LSU definitely seems to wind up on the lucky side more often than not, which is not the worst thing in the world.
FWIW I enjoy watching your team play. There’s nothing like watching a defense as nasty as what you have. We’re doing our best to emulate y’all!

Counterpoint: every single team we’ve played this year has faced our backup quarterback. So on the balance, LSU has been “unlucky” in that regard.
This is an interesting point though. People are all so primed to say that LSU is “lucky” that when we do get a break, they’re quick to jump onto it as evidence of that luck. When a break goes against us, they don’t notice it as much.

Counter counter: The relative drop off from 1st string QB to 2nd is vastly greater with Florida and even Tennessee than it is with LSU. If you guys had lost Mathieu, then yea, that’d be unlucky. But you lost a guy most of your fan base has been clamoring to replace anyway.
Also, injuries/suspensions happen, but you guys happen to get two 2nd stringers in a row. The 4 different teams you faced only had to face your “2nd string” QB once. That doesn’t even touch on the fact that Flynn is still starting, even with Jefferson’s return.

Exactly right. And quality depth is part of what makes a team good. There’s nothing “lucky” about having players on the two deep who can step up in the face of injury or suspension. And as to the UF game I still think LSU would’ve won if Brantley was healthy. Maybe it’d have been 41-17 or 41-21 instead of 41-10, but still.

The argument isn’t about LSU having good depth. It’s that they are lucky the two teams the face without starting QBs don’t have good depth, making them substantially less good teams for reasons outside of what LSU did. Honestly, it’s a throwaway comment and I think LSU would’ve beaten Florida with Brantley as well. There’s no doubt it’s impressive what you have been able to do this season.
As for Jordan Jefferson starting, well, I’m just surprised he’s still on the team after this post suspension interview…

UGA…coaches in the booth. The “D” position coaches are doing a very good job…so far.
Now, the offense. Did not take Mike Bobo but half a season to begin to disappear. How long will CMR put up with his offensive staff?
Where has this offense been since South Carolina. It is widely said the Dawgs offensive line is one of the biggest all of football. Bobo, all passes off play-action or vertical seams. He has yet to understand the dimensions of the fiels. Why can this position coach / coordinator not understand how to create running lanes and gaps?
I do not see any team in the top 10 that is overwhelming this season. In the SEC the separation is now beginning. Think CMR understands that, but his OC does not. Sort of take that “between the lines” from CMR’s comments this week after the offense went into the “waltz” routine at Neyland.
Offense! When are you guys going to move up your play?

“Dawgs offensive line is one of the biggest all of football.” Those five guys generally play the whole game…..that’s a whole lot of reps and I don’t care how big you are! Tired is tired and it is hard to go every down against a strong D line rotation no matter who your SandC coach may be!

LSU has been dominant in every game I’ve watched of theirs and that includes some highly rated opponents. Despite teams gaining a bunch of yards on them, I’ve never felt like LSU was ever in trouble.
Bama may be the same, but they haven’t been tested quite the same way yet.
OU will be a good victim for the BCS game for either LSU or Bama.

LSU does have an amazing record under Miles. And Miles was a “lucky bounce on a lateral” and a “too many men on the field” penalty from being out of work. You cannot separate the two. The man’s a high-wire act. It’s who he is and what he does.
It will rear its head at some point this season. They will have game in which they look like a team for the ages, probably Bama on Nov. 5. And then they will find a way to turn a game they should win by 3 touchdowns come down to something utterly absurd, the season hanging on the proverbial flip of the coin. Book it.
