- Well, finally South Carolina jumped Georgia in the queue.
- It will be interesting to see how much of a hit the loser of Alabama-LSU takes in the poll. Oklahoma and Wisconsin were both blown out of the top ten with their losses.
- There’s a clear trend of consolidation, both in the overall number of schools receiving votes and in the top tier, which is down to seven.

Get The Picture 
I don’t understand South Carolina being ranked ahead of Georgia. If the poll is just supposed to go by conference standings, then cool, just rank the first place teams in each conference. But when you take Garcia and Lattimore out of the equation, coupled with the way the Gamecocks were playing with them still in the lineup, the fact that Georgia could have very easily won the head-to-head matchup without a series of unforced errors…

If “If’s” and “But’s” were candy and nuts, we’d all have a merry Christmas and USC would have a decent QB and a healthy RB. USC can play the “what if” game too.

The reason for Oklahoma’s drop from the top ten is simple–the Sooners lost to an unranked team. Wisconsin lost to a team ranked lower than it was but not in the top ten so it drops out of the top ten, too. Bama or LSU should not drop very much because whichever one loses will have been beaten by a highly ranked opponent.

Unless LSU blows out Bama, or vice versa, I can’t see dropping either team out of the top 10. OU lost to TTU, who is pretty weak. Wisconsin lost to MSU on a fluke play, but then they haven’t really played anybody yet. LSU and Bama have pretty much destroyed all comers, both good teams and weak teams.

Maybe I don’t know how the mumme poll works, but I thought the ballot only had 10 teams. You’re telling me people placed the above teams in the top 10 in the country?????

And that is why anyone with SC, UGA, USC, or Penn State is very suspect. I don’t deny they all belong in a Top 20 at this point, but Top 10 isn’t even close. With all the games scheduled over the next 2-3 weeks, that could all change, but for now none of those should have ever been even a consideration. Above that, there is some room for debate.

I think an argument could be made for Houston and VA Tech (though I didn’t consider either of them for my top 10), but nobody beyond that.

Agree, that is why I didn’t put them on my list. I wouldn’t personally vote for them as a Top 10 team at this point, but I can see how someone could make a rational argument for them. Houston, in particular, may deserve a Top 10 rating from a majority before the season is done

If you think Houston has a legitimate argument to be top ten, I see no reason teams 13-20 don’t as well. I don’t think these teams are top ten – yet – but they probably would all beat Houston. The Cougars BARELY snuck by a UCLA team ranked 86 in scoring offense and 109 in scoring defense. Houston has played NOBODY yet and plays NOBODY the rest of the way. They are the new Hawaii.

Nor could anyone see Mr. Mumme placing Hawaii as the #1 ranked team prior to the 2007 Sugar Bowl.

Remember, everyone is ranking on slightly different criteria. The first guy to post commented about South Carolina not having Lattimore or Garcia which is more of a power ranking- how strong is the team, rather than what have they done. Others just look at W & Ls. Some try to blend the two. Others take a more detailed look at who the W & Ls were to. And of course, there is our old friend regional bias.
While I don’t agree with it, someone could say, “Penn St has only 1 loss to Alabama, the same as Arkansas, so they could be a top 10 team.” Now, I don’t agree with this, because Penn St hasn’t really beaten anyone either, while Arkansas has 2 wins over ranked teams. I don’t agree with this, but let’s say I live in Scranton, PA, it becomes a much more logical argument.
