Does Boom trump the Celebration?

A thought crossed my mind last night:  given the way the officiating crew called the Cocktail Party, is it possible that Muschamp’s sideline antics have irritated SEC referees more than Georgia’s 2007 end zone shuffle has?

  1. It is just the league trying to make sure that if USCe slips up and loses a game that the sacrificial lamb in the SECCG has a good enough record not to hurt the LSU/AL winners SOS. The good news about that is that we should get all the calls against AU 😉

Haha, I had the same thought. However, I do think Muschamp is damaging Florida’s traditional golden boy image with our conference referees. Let us not think we have escaped the wrath of Penn Wagers though, he didn’t call the game this past weekend and he is willing to influence any game he calls and is always just waiting for the right moment to stick it to you.

Wow. Talk about opposite ends of the sideline demeanor spectrum. Compare CMR with Boom.

When a coach is yelling at the refs for a delay of game penalty he’s got issues. If he can’t get his anger issues under control he’s going to lose the respect of his team (coaches included).

How do you think the game was officiated? I can’t bear to go back and watch the game, but I was there live and in person. The only questionable call I remember was the non call on UGA pass interference.

Your 72 false started pretty consistently without a flag being thrown.

And both players have the right to get the ball. Bacarri can’t help it if your guy was in his way.

So, your premise is that Florida was called for LESS penalties than they earned? If so, I think this is the opposite thesis to what the good Senator is proposing.

Mike, you need to see the film. Many holding, chop blocks and interference calls were NOT made on FU. You bet they missed one or two on UGA also. Gary and Verne went on about one UGA noncall that they played over and over, but I thought they were wrong. It was good D play. I did notice they missed several spots and one was by two feet. What ticks me off is the line judge running toward the other ref, but his line deviates and he finally spots the ball two feet from his original take . And it was in FU’s favor.

I tend to agree, Mike. I don’t know that the game was called any particular way (and I did watch on TV).

I never believed the celebration had anything to do with our not getting calls, and I don’t believe Muschamp’s antics do either. I think our problem was, and Florida’s problem is, 60% inexperience and 40% coaching fail.

    • I thought the game was called pretty straight. The refs missed some holding calls, but that’s SOP for the SEC.

I didn’t think Rambo was guilty of PI on that play. He was clearly going for the ball and has the right to do so. If anything, I was surprised that UF was flagged twice for PI (not that those weren’t the right calls on both occasions). SEC refs are hit and miss on that arm on the back stuff.

I’m in total agreement here Senator, that was not pass interference. But that certainly wasn’t Danielson’s take…he went on and on about how obvious it was and how they missed it. I proceeded to cuss him thru the tv but I’m not sure he could here me. I made a note to send him a dirty email about his opinion on that play, but since the Dawgs won and I’ve sobered up, I don’t think I care anymore.

I’m going to assume all of you saying it wasn’t pass interference were at the game and saw it once from far away. It was clearly pass interference. Just because both players have a right to the ball doesn’t mean one can go over the others back and mash him down as he is going up for the catch. He got there a solid half-second early. It was a missed call, and a big one too. Go watch the replay if you DVR’d it.

Exactly when did he hit the WR? It looked to me like they both got to the ball at the same time. And they both have the right to the football. And one was coming from a different direction. No you want PI? How about a Florida Player not even looking at the ball until it was in the WRs hand and was mugging him while the ball was in the air. Sure it was a TD for GA, but how is that not PI?

To the rule book! This is from the 2009-2010 rule book; I assume it hasn’t changed. Emphasis mine. Source: pages 104-105 of 2009-10 NCAA FOOTBALL RULES AND INTERPRETATIONS

          c. Defensive pass interference is contact beyond the neutral zone by a Team B player whose intent to impede an eligible opponent is obvious and it could prevent the opponent the opportunity of receiving a catchable forward pass. When in question, a legal forward pass is catchable. Defensive pass interference occurs only after a legal forward pass is thrown. It is not defensive pass interference (A.R. 7-3-8-I, IV, V, IX-XI, XIV and XV):Rule 7-3 / snaPPinG and PassinG The Ball FR-105
          1. When, after the snap, opposing players immediately charge and establish contact with opponents at a point that is within one yard beyond the neutral zone.
          2. When two or more eligible players are making a simultaneous and bona fide attempt to reach, catch or bat the pass. Eligible players of either
team have equal rights to the ball (A.R. 7-3-8-XII).

          3. When a Team B player legally contacts an opponent before the pass is thrown (A.R. 7-3-8-XIII).
          4. When a Team A potential kicker, from scrimmage kick formation, simulates a scrimmage kick by throwing the ball high and deep, and contact by a Team B player occurs.

For the record, I find it hard for anyone to complain about an SEc officiated game. They are so bad, and wildly inconsistent evem among crews, I always write it off to incompetence. We should all demand better, the passions are too high, the caliber of play too good, to settle for this level of officiating. Refs all over the country miss calls every game, but every single game I watch in the other conferences appear better to me. And it isn’t just because I don’t have a dawg in that fight, I often have a bet on the game.

On the other topic, I do think Boom MFer will not get as many close calls due to the lack of respect he shows officials. He is an immature brat so it is human nature for there to be retribution. And no, I have said for years I would never support him if he came to UGA so this isn’t an anti-uf gripe. I am seriously glad you have him.

Mac, do you do that just to irritate Mayor?

+1 on ref retribution on Boom. He was just asking for it.

No, I love the Mayor so much I might admit the lousy fog in a dump like Jax might have been responsible for getting in the vision of the refs. I am sure it is the location’s fault. (Note to Mike, you may want to begin the “move the game from Jax” campaign. Our fans won’t take responsibility, have to blame it on the longitude/lattiude…never the attitude.)

I’ve seen this referenced a number of times but didn’t notice it while watching the game live. Did I also read that CMR went off on the offical about this after the play?

There is a line that a coach can go to and still be fine. Bobby Cox in baseball for example. Earl Weaver was another. Billy Martin, not so much.

Coach K, Dean Smith etc. work(ed) the officials, but never lost their control of the game and themselves.

Many football coaches can go to that line. Urban was as good as any at being a total prick and somehow also seeming like a good guy to both refs and the press. Boom is just a petulant brat with no likeability factor and he will lose many calls over his antics. Having them back to back really doesn’t help Boom.

Serious question can someone expain to me why the cbs guys thought bacari rambo should’ve gotten a pass interference penalty on the play with trey burton? i thought if the ball was in the air both guys have a right to the ball, it looked to me like rambo and burton were both going for the ball hence i don’t understand why it wasn’t a correct no call but should have been pass interference.

TOTALLY in agreement with you. I thought it was a good no call. As far as I can tell you’re spot on with your assessment. I cussed Daneilson greatly and loudly for his opinion on that one.

I feel more like it was the lack of Meyer whining to the refs before the game about how bad UGA behaved. But your are correct to a large point with Boom showing his -$$ like he has isn’t helping his cause. They are the most penalized team in the NCAA. I don’t believe the refs are doing it on purpose but I wouldn’t blame them if they did give a jackass any breaks.

Rambo was there first on the PI no-call. Seeing it live … it was a tough call one way or the other. If you watch it again on TV though, Rambo is in the picture going for the ball and then Burton comes into the screen coming across Rambo. Burton initiated the contact …. Go Dawgs!

  11. I remember watching a ref inadvertently break up a Florida pass during the first quarter of the game. Someone in the place stood up and said “that’s the fairest the refs have been to Georiga in the last 10 years of this game.”
