Uh, moron, the current system is set up to ENSURE that one mistake won’t cost you the game. In order to lose in college overtime, you must first fail to score a touchdown or field goal, and THEN fail to prevent the other team from doing so, or vice versa. That’s a minimum of five failures, assuming you didn’t turn it over on offense. Meanwhile, in the NFL, if you lose the coin toss and a coverage guy trips on the kickoff, BALLGAME. You have just lost because you made one single mistake, and there’s no shot at redemption.
Your team lost because you don’t have a field goal kicker and you couldn’t finish a drive. AT HOME. No championship for you, ha, ha, and it had nothing to do with overtime rules.
In closing, if you liked the NFL so much, you certainly had the option to stay there.

That was the quote that stuck out for me as well. One mistake does not cost you the game in OT. Let’s count the mistakes that cost him the game. Mind you these are only OT mistakes.
1st Down – Incomplete Pass
5 yard Penalty
2nd Down – Incomplete Pass
3rd Down – Sack
4th Down – Missed FG
Now to defense.
1st Down – 3 yd Rush
2nd Down – Toss sweep 15 yard gain to 7 yard line
1st Down – No gain
2nd Down – No gain
3rd Down – FG
I’m going to say being generous it took FOUR mistakes to add up to this overtime loss.
1. 5 yard penalty
2. Sack
3. Missed FG
4. Gave up 15 yard toss sweep

Any overtime where the team that wins the coin toss is 50% more likely to win (60-40 odds) is obscene. I would almost prefer they bring out soccer goals and do penalty kicks.

Or, score a touchdown to cap off any of the long drives you had all night.
That’s what the jackass was getting at. Alabama was able to drive on LSU all night that night, and LSU only managed one real sustained drive. He thinks that if he got a kickoff, he’d be able to walk down the field and score. Too bad them’s not the rules, Nick. And too bad you didn’t take advantage of even ONE of the chances you had to score a kill shot in regulation.

He also had the ball and instead of fighting to the last, opted to let the clock run out and go to overtime. If you can’t kick field goals, it appears to me that overtime is the worst of the two evils.

I think college OT should start at the 35 or 40 instead of the 25, but otherwise, I prefer the college method. It lines up the offenses and defenses in a potential scoring situation, and rewards the team that gets the first stop. And, in the case of the LSU-Alabama game, it actually ended. In the NFL, it would have been a tie, because neither team would have scored. It was 6-6 at the end of 60 minutes. It was not a sure thing that one team would move the ball enough to score in an NFL OT period.

Agree with moving the starting point back. Then at least you have to get a first down to be in reasonable FG range.

I guess the most glaring oversight there is that in the other four quarters, the first one to score is not deemed the winner. The set up for college overtime is pretty fair, he and his team just did not get it done.

Another rule that I would like to see changed is this: I think when you elect to have a WR throw a duck to a TE when you’re in field goal range, the other team should not be allowed to intercept the ball. My coaching decisions are irrelevant.

BTW Saban did get out-coached in the game. That’s not the crime of the century, though. The Tide staff just got a little too cute – or at least that’s the way it looked when we didn’t make the plays we should have.
I’ll tell you what, too – I’d rather argue about Saban and a bunch of other stuff than for anybody to have to deal with the Penn State stuff.

The college overtime is way better and more fair than the NFL overtime. The only thing I personally would like to see different in the college overtime is to some way implement (gulp!) the kicking game into it.

I tend to think the college OT is just about right. Perhaps move the ball to back to the 30 or 35. Maybe.
The one thing I don’t like is the 62-56 type games when regulation ended tied at 21.

I would like to see each team get 4 plays from their own 20, going any direction they wish. Most net yards on those four plays gets 1 point, game over. No tired players, or big advantage to a coin flip, no padded stats, or scores, and kickers don’t decide it. Quick, equal, and decisive.

ill never understand ‘the better team lost’ mantra.
offensive and defense were a push. lsu was clearly better in special teams.. or not as horrible as bama. sorry to say but ST is 1/3rd of the game. LSU was better at it. so they were the better overall team. period.
i get that bama drove the field more often, but like bama’s D, LSU came up big when it needed to and put it all on the ST… which they failed miserably at.

You sure wouldn’t want to be held accountable strictly based on coaching decisions, i.e., “”Hey crip, throw those crutches down and get in there for punt return duty!” No, it was the schedule last year, damned college overtime rules this year. Reminds you of the Dims first learning about the Electoral College in November, 2000. “Damned conservatives changed the rules on us Teddy! Not really, never heared conservatives bein shocked about the process, even if they didn’t care for the results. Most paid attention in civics and understood how elections are conducted. Of course, ’92 was life or death like what we face in 2012. Stakes couldn’t be higher…but the electoral college will still rule at least one more time.

There is not one thing wrong with the current set-up. Losers always bitch, moan, and complain…looking for a remedy or excuse where they failed the first time.
Sorta like that bunch at PSU…finally they hold a vigil for the victims. Now why did they not do that last week rather than creating a riot. The rest of America has an answer for you criminals…it aint’t that little arrogant saying of “We are Penn State”…like they are the only university with traditiona and pride…well they burned it to the ground…always known now as pedihople university.
