Haha. That was my first thought reading that article.
Mike Leach called Malzahns wildcat offense a “caveman” offense. It only works if your guys are all bigger and stronger than the competition. It doesn’t take any creative thinking or strategy. Defenses will try to angle in and take away the rushing attack. However, if your team is bigger then they will wear them down.
Watching Teabag win another game last night with basically the same caveman offense, I almost threw up. I thought for sure he would fail miserably in the pros. Won’t he just go away? I can’t believe Denver is going to go “all in” with that style of offense. One injury to Teabag will leave them with nothing for the future.

It seems, on the surface, that pro head coaches or DCs refuse to simplify their systems to the obvious “caveman” basics — put one of your studs on the QB and keep him there.

This article is proof that you have to act while you are hot. Malzahn better take a HC job ASAP while at least some still think he’s a genius. A few more 7-5 regular seasons on the Plains and nobody will be offering any HC jobs to him any more. Remember that Auburn offensive guru Al Borges? Where’s he now? Not HC anywhere.

I think he is the OC at Michigan. They are the FBS leaders this season in touchdown drives of 85 or more yards.

I’m not knocking Borges. Borges is a good OC. The point is that when he was OC at Auburn years ago a lot of people talked about him exactly like they now talk about Malzahn and Borges is still an OC.

Not everyone who is a successful coach is capable of being the head coach. That doesn’t take anything away from what they do. Ask CMR how important his DC is. Not being smart ass here. But I’ve worked for CEO’s that couldn’t possibly do my job and a lot of their success is due .. in part to me…… but I don’t know if I could do their job.

Interesting. More than a few Auburn fans I know are dismayed that Malzahn seems to have less influence on the offense this year than last.
Well, should Gus bolt for the UNC job, then with no Malzahn or Cam Newton on the plains, I suspect this columnist will find out what “unacceptable” really looks like.

I saw the rumors that Malzahn is heading to UNC. I think that would be a good move for him if he wants his own gig.
It is hilarious how people linked him to the UNC job based on his wife’s twitter account.

If that is true, it appears the NC is serious about hiring him and he is serious about going there.
Plus talk about a cake job. You do not have to win consistent and it is a BB school. Just put a decent product out on the field, every 5 years or so have a chance at a championship game. Plus you play in the ACC.

He ignores that: (1) Blake’s been hurt for much of the season; (2) the rest of Auburn’s receiving corps is mundane at best; (3) the offensive line is very green.

And Middle TN State plays competition suited for Middle TN State. Auburn goes up against defenses from LSU, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, etc. He also ignores the obvious fact that when you have a championship team, you have to figure a lot of those guys are either seniors or headed to the NFL. The Plainsman writer is ridiculous.

Thank You HahiraDawg, we’ll get the official notice on early action admissions from UGA late this afternoon. This is a big deal, her brother is now at Clemson because it is so damn hard for these kids to get into UGA. One thing for sure, she will be at the game tomorrow with her Dad, she is a big Dawg Fan and will be the prettiest girl walking campus this time next year!!!!

Yes, the Hope scholarship has made the pool of applicants several times larger than it used to be. Therefore, the admissions standards are much higher.

Also, kids who used to go to a Duke, a Vandy or to an out of state institution like UVa are now accepting the Hope money, going to Georgia and their rich parents are giving the kids BMWs because they save so much money not paying out of state or private tuition. An unintended consequence.

Out of state tuition at Vandy is about 40 grand a year.
Georgia in state is less than 10 grand. I don’t see someone trying to buy a BMW with the Hope if they are able to afford Vandy. Those kids were driving BMW’s in high school. 😉

Apples and oranges per our situation. It would run me $7200. a semester for both my sons without these subsidies. With the Hope and Harris scholly it runs roughly less than $2000 a semester. Moving forward both are on the Dean Team and serious about what they want to do. They both have part time jobs <20 hours a week. They both pay their own phone bills and car insurance. They some times take over the house on game days invite people I don't know and play music I am unfamiliar with. I've had guests spend the nite that I thought had awkward piercing and weird tattoos. I bet they make fine accountants, lawyers and doctors one day. Miss the college experience ….. I hope they get it all!

Hmmm… I’m not arguing that a coordinator position at Auburn isn’t an important job, but that language was way too flowery to be coming from a Bammer troll. We’ve got a really good defense, but go back and look at Alabama’s numbers. Mark Barron is a beast. Upshaw, Hightower, Chapman, all of ’em. We might be ranked third, but the separation between us and Alabama (or even LSU and Alabama) is marked.

So the writer’s premise is: “Malzahn is overrated b/c he can’t do more with our sucky team”?
What garbage. Ok, if you’re Duke or Vandy, it’s a fair question. They expect to have sucky players and sucky teams. If you are Awbun, you ask what do your coaches do when they have extraordinary players. When Gus had a once in a generation talent, the team won a natty. The question of sucky players should go to Chizook and Coach Mix-a-lot. Why haven’t they built a better team yet?
While I’m happy where we are now, in years past CMR and CMB have had some terrible lapses of “smarts” in deploying our talent (redshirting KM, expecting JT3 to pass effectively). If, on a lark, Cam had transferred to Georgia, do you think we would have one the natty last year? I don’t either. He would be buried on the TE depth chart and stealing laptops at Boyd.
The author also explains away Gus’ success at Ark as being truly the genius of QB coach David Lee. Really? The QB coach wanted a RB to run a veer b/c the QB’s sucked so bad? The same David Lee that is OC at Ole Miss this season? The Ole Miss that ranks 104th in passing & 110th in scoring? Some genius.
Maybe he’s overhyped but I’d say that Gus at least tries to find the most effective deployment for the talent he has. 2009 with a stinky Chris Todd is evidence of making chicken salad out of chicken shit.
Deploying the pieces you have in any way imaginable to find a way to score certainly can’t be said of Weis this year and, to be fair, of CMR in year’s past.

Unfortunately, I agree with your assertion that sCam would have been playing tight end at Georgia. That makes me wonder why Faton Bauta committed to UGA. He says UGA was one of the few schools that were recruiting him as a QB, but he sure does seem like an odd fit for the offense.

I hope you’re right, and I’m glad he committed. But some of the recent position switches (Samuel, Tripp, and Brandon Miller just to name a few) make me leery of this sort of thing. I’d hate for him to be buried on the QB depth chart for three years only to make some drastic position switch late in his career. If he’s gonna be a linebacker, I hope he and the coaches figure it out quickly.

I give him a lot of credit for pulling the Bulldog Nation out of the losing steak we were on against the Gators. If I were a football player at Georgia and someone hung that cred on me ….. I would smile for a long …. long … long time!

I do not know. Here is what I do know. Given what we know now of Cam, he may very have been a starter here. But lets be honest, he would not have started over Stafford. However, he could have played the 2 years after Stafford left and been even more Pro-ready.

I think Normaltown was imagining a transfer scenario where sCam would’ve only had one year at UGA – specifically last year – and that is the scenario that my comment was based upon. And I just don’t see the coaches moving heaven and earth to utilize his talents at QB last year – or any other single year for that matter.

You forget that: 1) Alabama invented college football 2) The Bear was the greatest coach of all time in all sports 3) Alabama never faded they simply took a break from 1981 til 1992 and then again from 1992-2007 in order to let the other schools catch up so it would be fun to beat them again, and 4) Alabama is more deserving to get a rematch because unlike Oregon they “won everywhere but on the scoreboard” and would no doubt in a rematch find both a non muscle bound kicker who could kick and a Quarterback who could complete passes to someone besides Trent Richardson.
If you take all of these factors into consideration it is obvious that Alabama deserves a rematch and would likely succeed in the rematch despite losing at home to the “Rainman” and his crew from Baton Rouge.
I hope Oklahoma State wins out, we beat LSU and they are still allowed to go play for the BCS while we push Alabama to the Capital One or Outback Bowl where Saban and company take out their dissatisfaction on Michigan or Wisconsin. It would be the perfect punishment for Nick and may make him wish he were back at Michigan State where he could over coach and lose a few games a year where no one cared.

I agree that there is a terrible coordinator in the village. Thankfully, he is not the one getting overtures from other colleges. Ted Roof is my favorite Auburn coach, and I hope they keep him forever.

Wait, what? Can we(the entire country) please get off this ‘Bama has the best defense evah’ bandwagon. Yes, they have a great defense but that claim is just ridiculous. We arguably have the best player in the conference in Jarvis Jones. I’d also take Boykin over Milner and Abry Jones over both of Bama’s DE. Chapman is good but the rotation of Geathers and Jenkins is better, IMO.

I would say at least 8 of their starting Defenders will be NFL players. They have a great D, period. They are big and fast and probably mostly an NFL defense. I say this as a die-hard Dawg fan. But you watch that Defense and you are lot, OMG how did they get all those guys together at the same time.
Imagine if Jim Donnan had a great DC his last couple of years, that is Alabama right now.
