A Rocky, Rocky Flop

It may take a few days for the magnitude of how awful Tennessee’s loss was yesterday to sink in.

Then again, maybe not.  And you’ve gotta love this:

Roark, a senior receiver from Acworth, Ga., didn’t even warm up at quarterback before the game.

Mike Hamilton, the gift that keeps on giving.

I have leave my Georgia hat in the car when I go to the grocery store…the Vol fans running out the door are more dangerous than the Tennessee offense.

Back when TN had a 9 game winning streak against GA, I always felt that they had caught lightning in a bottle and that the program was playing was above its head. Fulmer put together some good recruiting classes by raiding the suburban Atlanta area by I reckoned that eventually, the out-of-state recruiting blitz would have to end. Well it did, and the lack of those important resources combined with an AD who has made some pretty poor choices has placed TN right where they belong – in the shitter. Now as an overall program, they’re probably a buy right now and are playing below the level they’re capable of, but I’ll just sit back and enjoy their slump knowing that our program is trending in an opposite direction. Florida is also trending down but their resources, in all respects, trump TN’s by a large margin.

Because he used an orange dog statue instead of painting Smokey orange? A live orange and white checkerboard dog would have been less pathetic than handtrucking an orange statue of a dog around the practice field…wtf? It would be more appropriate to use a sleeping (the way you see them on the highway) armadillo painted orange on the belly with it’s feet sticking skyward.

UT fans who were rational understood that Cutcliffe and Chavis were the key coaches and that (as JaxDawg pointed out) the Vols were recruiting really well in North Georgia. But Cutcliffe and Chavis are working their magic elsewhere now and the Georgia boys who used to go to Knoxville are now going to Bama, Auburn or USCe. As long as that trend continues the Vols will never get back to what they were.

It’s fascinating how the balance of power has shifted. The key early-season East division eliminator is now Georgia-Sakarlina. UT-Florida game is for also-rans! lol But it’s great that the Dawgs wound up beating the eliminator game.

It’s also worth remembering that in the late 90’s, UT was the only team in the conference that allowed players to continue playing after they had withdrawn from minimum # of classes Fall Semester (and thus should be ineligible). It’s a very small tweak, but has obvious implications.

Wasn’t Rodney Garner part of our troubles with UT as well?

The situation is actually worse than the Senator’s post and the linked articles suggest. UT is 23-27 against all teams for the last 4 seasons. That includes the doormats it plays.

UT has the most myopic fans I have encountered in the SEC. They like one school, watch one CFB game, and pretty much limit their knowledge for discussion to what is happening in KnoxVegas. Yes, that is a generalization, but it astounds me. I remember the first time I went into a sports bar in TN and found all the TVs on the Vol game, no interest in watching the progress of other games…just didn’t care. Now I am going to focus on UGA first, always, but can you really not multi-task and include some interest in the CFB world around you? It is the only area where many conversations must be limited in scope because you may get a blank stare if you broaden it by asking about the USC sanctions, or mention Jerry Sandusky.

It will be very pleasurable to watch these fans flounder for another 10 years as they seek to regain, what they consider, their birthright. We need to close the North Georgia and Atlanta recruiting areas while they gasp for air. Someone screwed up SW Georgia years ago during the Goff era, but it isn’t too late to bury TN….and they deserve it. UT has always had this “holier than thou” attitude toward UGA’s program and it is puzzling why (I guess the unfortunate timing of beginning divisional play with them while Goff was our HC.) I would love to see Kentucky pass them in the East every year with only hated Vandy below them. I think the 5th spot would look great on them, but finishing 6th this year is a great joy.

I’ve had good game day experiences with fans from all the SEC schools with the exception of florida and tennessee. Florida fans I don’t see much and the one time we had them on campus they were pretty obnoxious. Tennessee people won’t talk to you and the superior attitude is obvious. I remember when we upset them in Athens some years ago and our students stormed the field, Dwight Satterwhite sent the Redcoats to walk out with the Tennessee band and with Smokey to get them safely back on the bus in the middle of a hostile crowd. The next year we beat them in Knoxville and their band just walked out and left the Redcoats surrounded. Pretty scary.

Or both Kentucky and Vandy (I know you don’t like Franklin but this is better for UGA) above UT and UT in the cellar of the SEC East.

    Great game summary here:

It sounds so awful I wish I had taped it to watch the sheer ineptitude of both teams.

    • No, really, you don’t. I attempted to watch the replay online and the sheer ineptitude was such that it outweighed the joy I got in seeing it all play out. I wouldn’t have ever thought this phenomenon possible, especially with regards to Tennessee. I hate orange.

“I never expected to do anything like that,” said Roark. “Not the part of beating Tennessee, but the me quarterbacking part.”

The most amazing thing to me is that this UT team beat Cincinnati by 2 touchdowns earlier this year. That same Cincinnati team is still in the running for the Big (L)East crown and automatic BCS bowl bid that goes with it.

That’s just crazy on many different levels.

Senator …. interesting stat. After 3 years CDD was winning at 46% clip while at LaTech . After 2 years at UT he is again at a 46% winning number. Now that is awkward I’m sure.
