Monday morning buffet

Dig in.  Everything tastes good this week.

  • Pat Forde flays Urban Meyer’s credibility.
  • The NCAA is opening a real Pandora’s Box with its Penn State inquiry.  Not that I’d expect anything less from Mark Emmert.
  • Illinois becomes the first team in D-1 history to open the season with six wins and finish with six losses; the Zooker is canned and essentially calls the disastrous end a flesh wound.
  • The Florida Gators are anything but all in right now.
  • Girl, do you eat with that finger?
  • If Mike Leach can’t land a coaching job this offseason, he never will.
  • “If we don’t give away points, there’s no way they can beat us.” – Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones to the Associated Press, about LSU in Saturday’s SEC title game.  (Makes a nice bookend with Tech’s Julian Burnett’s quote a few paragraphs down.)
  • Missouri is about to find out with its move to the SEC that it has to spend money to make money.

    I wonder if he had someone giving him advice on what to say during his retirement or if he just shot from the hip. I’m guessing the latter. Maybe he believed he was retiring to focus on family, faith, and health. It just turns out his family didn’t want to spend time with an asshole.

    I tend bar outside of Chicago and meet a lot of different people. Met a colleague of Corch’s childhood friend from Ohio….Corch told his friend on a fishing trip that leaving Florida was a moral issue for him not health related. Had to turn a blind eye to questionable off-field activities of his players. Told his friend if he suspended players for those activities he could not have been competitive at UF. The flip-flop makes sense to me.

    Regarding the NCAA getting involved in the Sandusky criminal matter by launching an investigation of Penn State, if you think about it that makes a lot of sense. The NCAA has no supoena power of its own. It cannot send people to jail for perjury or obstruction of justice. (I maintain that is the only way that Auburn avoided sanctions in the Cam Newton matter–the related criminal investigation of Lowder turned up nothing related to Cam Newton, Newton’s father or any payments to them by Auburn or Auburn boosters and the NCAA lacked the authority to force anything out of the suspected bagmen.) The DA and US Attorney have such powers. The NCAA can simply go along for the ride and get whatever is dredged up in the criminal case that has collateral impact on Penn State as an institution. The most obvious is what appears to be an institutionalized program of “fixing” and “covering up” transgressions committed by athletes while they were in school at Penn State. That is why Penn State had such a squeaky clean image. Paterno himself masterminded the cover-up of all bad acts by his players. All sorts of underhanded stuff beyond just the pedophile business will be uncovered by the criminal investigation. The NCAA might as well use it. The NCAA. In the final analysis nothing but a bunch of bottom-feeders.
