Rematch, redux

Sounds like Mike Gundy could stand a few lessons in BCS politicking from Mack  Brown:

Gundy is not a voter in this season’s USA Today/Coaches poll. But he said if he did fill out a ballot, right now he would put 11-1 Alabama ahead of 10-1 OSU after comparing each team’s loss.

“If somebody sat me down and said (I) had to make a decision,” Gundy said, “with where we’re at right now, Alabama lost to what would be the No. 1 team in the country (LSU), and Oklahoma State lost to Iowa State.

“In our situation, if I was doing it fair, I don’t know how I could put us in front of (Alabama) right now.”

Fair?  Screw fair!

Somewhere in this great land of ours, T. Boone Pickens is blowing a gasket right now.

I think the OSU people around him would argue he is a stupid man. He just gave an opinion that diminishes his team for no good reason. It would have been better if he just said he doesn’t want to discuss those things and focused on what his football team has accomplished to this point in the season.

Or it could be that he’s just acknowledging the obvious…something that most pundits agree with as well.

As noted below, the comment actually does give him some room to comment following a win over the Sooners, plus helps him to look like a good guy in the process.

He doesn’t need to acknowledge a subjective topic. If anything, he should focus on the objective evidence about his team.

How about how OSU has the #2 scoring offense in the country and the #3 total offense? There is that.

Nothing against Bama but… Okie State has beaten more ranked teams than Bama and lost the same number of games. If the Pokes beat the Sooners on Saturday their resume is unquestionably better than Bama’s.

except that he’s right, yeah, there’s no good reason for his opinion. Props to Mike Gundy for not being a conniving weasel in the manner of so many coaches today.

Nobody points out the fact that Bama lost at home with no outside distractions while OSU, although they lost to a much weaker team, lost on the day that two members of their athletic department died in a plane crash. Anyone that’s been around college athletics knows that most athletic departments are like a family – even though some sports may considers others only distant cousins.

Losing those coaches that day likely had an impact on OSU’s play that night. Should they beat OU, they should get a shot if LSU can beat UGA. Bama had their shot at LSU at home following a bye week and missed.

I believe I’ve heard that Gundy said the accident should not have had an effect.

I can’t say whether or not it did…I guess only Gundy or his team could do that. They haven’t – to my knowledge – used it as an excuse. If everyone else wants to that’s ok by me.

I’d hope the OSU team did not publicly use it as an excuse. I also understand Gundy saying it should not affect them. However, I’d be shocked if it actually had no effect on the team.

I really don’t like talking about this particular part of the story because I don’t want any comment to be taken the wrong way concerning the victims of the crash and their relationship to the athletics department.

So I guess as far as I’ll go is this…Ok State was favored by 27 or 28 and lost.

Dumb. If OSU beats Okie then he will likely change his tune…but too late. Too many uninformed voters will latch-on to this statement and it’s all they’ll remember. And if Gundy wins and doesn’t lobby for being #2, then he should be summarily dismissed from the program. Can’t be that stupid twice, can he?

Gundy, you are a very good coach. But a 5th grader could have come to that conclusion.

Question. 5th Grader, have you seen Alabama and Iowa State play football this season. Yes, I have. Which is better. Well, I had to ask my mom and dad if I could stay up late and watch Iowa State. You know they are not televised as much as Bama anyway…at least not in prime time. But I mom and dad loaned me a buck, I would put it on Bama every Saturday. How many conference titles or national titles does those boys from Iowa State have, sir.
You’ve answered the question son. Her is a dollar.
Thanks, if LSU drops its game to Georgia and OU drops its game to the Pokes, I’m all in on Bama.

Recruiting. How does Vandy have the top class in baseball. Followed by Ole Miss, Carolina, MSU, and Florida re the SEC. Dawgs follow those guys.

Understand Carolina with an assistant coach like Chad Holbrook. Since he arrived in Columbia, the Cocks have taken two, back-to-back CWS. No wonder the “old ball coach” was a little down about not going back to the SEC title game this year.

Dawgs need a signature win in football. Been awhile.

What an idiot. His job is to make the best case for his team a la Les in ’07. Like Mack Brown politicking past Cal in ’04. Does it suck that it’s necessary? Yeah, but there it is. The coaches playing for these titles aren’t above it and if you are, then you’re handicapping yourself and doing a disservice to your team and institution.

For crying out loud: he’s the coach at Oklahoma State! This may be as close as he ever gets to a national title. He should already recognize that part of what’s keeping him out of the game is that he does not coach at a blue-blood school like Alabama. “Being honest” isn’t going to overcome the advantages Les Miles jumped at when he left OSU for LSU.

The only thing he should be saying in relation to the BCS title game is that his team has wins over more ranked teams. His team lost on the road in double overtime by a missed field goal to a bowl eligible team. He should say “we’re undefeated in regulation.” Nothing that comes out of his mouth should concede one point to another team trying to play in that game.

If I were an Okie State fan (or T. Boone Pickens) I would be livid.

This reminds me. I was very disappointed in CMR not making a better case for the Dawgs to play in the BCSNCG in ’07. When the ESPN talking heads all started lobbying in unison against UGA I thought CMR should have stood up and said they were all FOS and that his team deserved to play in the big Game.

Yes but how could we, as a culture, go on without it?

“One of the most salient features of our culture is that there is so much bullshit. Everyone knows this. Each of us contributes his share. But we tend to take the situation for granted. Most people are rather confident of their ability to recognize bullshit and to avoid being taken in by it. So the phenomenon has not aroused much deliberate concern, or attracted much sustained inquiry. In consequence, we have no clear understanding of what bullshit is, why there is so much of it, or what functions it serves.”

Should such conduct be considered “smart” because it serves their own interest or “stupid” because it makes no damn sense? Would it be “right” because it serves a selfish interest or “wrong” because it’s a clear manipulation?

For all the talk you’ve spouted about this system making the regular season meaningful……..the last regular season of the year this year is meaningless if you listen to talking heads. Heck, I just heard Gary Danielson say, with the freaking no. 1 team playing in the conference game, that this year’s game just doesn’t have the excitement in the past few.

Wow!! Beautiful system you’ve got there Senator.

The system is designed to pit the two best AND most deserving teams in a game. By and large it serves that purpose without diminishing the import of games in sept. I know this because but for losses in sept. UGA would be playing for more than a conference championship on Saturday. The bcs is only “not working” if anyone could argue that there is a better AND more deserving team than either LSU or Alabama. That argument can’t be made.

What about if your QB hadn’t fumbled the ball to SC? To me that pretty much summarizes this crazy year in college football. Take that play away and UGA would most likely be playing for more than a conference title this weekend.

Take away the scheduling of the Boise game to start the season and substitute a Buffalo in its place and UGA is playing for more than a conference title this weekend.

The SEC, Pac 12, Big 12, Big 10, et al conference championships will be decided this Saturday. That’s a pretty big day.

It’s not like its the quarterfinal or semifinal round of the playoffs.

This weekend is still part of the regular season and for all intents and purposes, no game, no matter the outcome will have any affect whatsoever on the NCG. If we were playing for a four team or eight team playoff spot, it still would. My point is that your argument is basically wrong. There are years were a playoff would actually make every week of the regular season more important than this system of trying to pick two teams out of 120 based on a very limited schedule compared to the other sports which….use a very large playoff. Nothing really makes sense in college sports. This would definitely be one of those.
