Coaching Search Update – Tuesday Edition
It’s delusional, of course. Evidently the article indicates that almost every leading head coach in America (Chip Kelly, for example) has made inquiries about the position. The ironic part is that Richt’s interest is supposedly fueled by the Georgia fan base’s impatience with the program over the past couple of seasons. Yeah, that’s why he’d be interested in going to a school that’s been through three head coaches during Richt’s stay in Athens.

I read that article yesterday and it’s pure black fecal material. The two or three paragraphs about how Richt was “in New York secretly meeting with TA&M officials” was particularly worth a chuckle…. Right. Think Keith Marshall would have committed yesterday if Richt was interviewing elsewhere?

Agree regarding Marshall. I saw this rumor on the TAMU boards yesterday morning and thought the only way it might be true would be if Marshall didn’t commit to UGA. Because the only way Marshall wasn’t going to commit to Georgia was if he didn’t think Richt was going to be there. And the only reason he would think that would be if Richt had told him he was exploring other job opportunities. Marshall commitment tells us all we need to know about the credibility of reports that Richt is interviewing, or considering interviewing, at other places.

^This.^ All day long, this. There is no SEC analog for A&M. “Delusional” is an overused, even redundant, term when talking about fanbases, and it falls well short of describing the North Korean levels of institutional psychosis that is the Aggie athletics apparatus.
Can you imagine Auburn’s AD referring to Alabama in a legal document as “SPUAT?” If you remember the A&M-Texas game this year, there was an Aggie fan holding a sign that claimed that Texas was afraid to play them — the same Aggies who left the frickin’ conference. The Aggies didn’t leave the Big XII because of the Longhorn Network. At the same time the LHN was in startup mode, the Aggies were building their own network. What sent them over the edge was the $300M check that Bristol sent to Austin. Seriously, what sent the Aggies to the SEC was a case of red-ass.
Maybe I’ve lived in Texas too long, but we are about to find out why the rest of the Big XII laughed these guys out of the conference.

Honestly, I wouldn’t buy into the Texas party line to that degree. I agree red-ass sent them looking for other conference mates, but they weren’t the only disgruntled BigXII partner looking to get away from dealing with the arrogance on 40 acres in Austin.

It’s fine for fans to bitch about nebulous things like “arrogance,” but it took the Aggies to base a 100-year business decision on it.
The Aggies were working on their own network. It’s not Texas’ fault that LHN was worth $300M more than theirs. And, before you bring up Nebraska, remember that the Huskers were the ones who drove the original unequal revshare agreement in the Big XII.

i don’t really g.a.s. either way about tamu, but if they and texas wanted to continue their rivalry they could. georgia, florida, south carolina, and kentucky don’t seem to have problems continuing long standing rivalries with out-of-conference foes. wasn’t that the point of the “afraid to play us” sentiment?

Agreed. TAMU got the red-ass and left the Big 12. UT got the red-ass that TAMU’s leaving and said they can’t play them anymore.
As someone said during the “last” Texas-TAMU game, somebody will pony up big bucks to both schools to play the game in the new Jerry-bowl in Dallas.

But why should Texas continue to play A&M? A&M did everything within its power to damage the University of Texas and the other remaining members of the Big 12 by leaving and nearly destroying the conference. Now UT is supposed to just smile and give A&M a huge home game every other year? Screw that. If I’m Texas, I’m smiling and waving and wishing A&M luck with a bunch of new rivals that the Aggie fans don’t really care about for the most part beyond LSU and Arkansas, and a *whole* bunch of SEC losses.

Exactly. Sure, Texas could schedule a series with A&M. But, by becoming a non-conference team, the Aggies just put themselves in a pool with Michigan, USC, Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and anyone else Texas might want to schedule. And, given that Aggies put Texas in this position, I can’t blame Texas if the Aggies aren’t their first call.

They are saying “screw you.” This whole move by A&M was their way of saying they don’t need Texas. Fine, then. Enjoy life without Texas.
If you’re Deloss Dodds, why would you prioritize a game with these guys over home-and-homes with the teams I previously mentioned?

Fine, fine. I don’t know the details. I do know that Texas throws its weight around and it should surprise anyone that others don’t want to deal with it. I also know that no fewer than 4 schools have bailed on being in the Big XII in the last two years and more than one intimated that the Longhorns were at least one reason why.
On the face of it, the Ags got into the SEC. That’s an upgrade for them all the way around.

How does Texas “throw its weight around” that’s any different than what other schools do in the same position? I don’t see anyone threatening to leave the SEC over the Sunshine Network. Every member of the SEC is free to do side media deals. Are the Aggies going to run the ACC when LSU, Georgia or Florida signs a blockbuster deal?
Texas is a money machine. Deal with it. I don’t get A&M’s passive-aggressive schtick of resenting Texas’ institutional strength to the point of leaving the conference, and then turning around a whining about wanting to play them every year. Either compete with ’em or don’t.

i’m pretty sure the big xii doesn’t have equal profit sharing either like the sec requires. so the longhorn network is on top of already preferential treatment. honestly, it’s amazing the big xii stayed together as long as it did.

No one in the Big XII had a problem with the proportional revenue sharing arrangement until they saw how much more Texas was worth. Much like Al Gore, they were for it before they were against it.

The SEC has three teams that manage to schedule a non-conference game with their big in-state rival every single year. A&M leaving the conference does not in any way prevent them from playing each other.

Uh, you think A&M fans are delusional and think they invented football? They will get schooled by Bama’s fans on both of these subjects. My personal experiences with A&M fans have been very pleasant. Good group, with a solid football tradition.
I did see a “proposed” schedule yesterday, I don’t think any of these have been officially released, that showed they would have home games next year with Forida, LSU, and Alabama. That is a great home schedule for fans but can you imagine the following year when you go on the road to those places? Were they trying to scare any potential coaches away with this?

Yeah, I saw that yesterday as well. It’s completely ludicrous. Georgia wins the SEC East and yet we’re not happy with Richt? …or even better, Richt would leave Georgia, the dominant in-state school in a fertile recruiting area, where he has advantages like a brand new state of the art facility, a beautiful campus, a pleasant climate, a great college town, and beautiful coeds, to go to a school that will always be the second best in-state school and play in a division where he’ll perennially be competing with the likes of Les Miles, Nick Saban, and Bobby Petrino to get to Atlanta? Riiiiight.
