Which means, as I said the other day, you might as well get past the game management snafus and worry about the rest of what needs addressing if Georgia is to take the next step back to being an elite program.

I was over it by the time I got back to the hotel. I hate to lose, but it happened. While I’m still unhappy with the strategy in overtime, and really as soon as they decided to take their feet off of the gas pedal, it isn’t like winning the Outback Bowl was going to un-disappoint me about losing to Boise, South Carolina, and second-half LSU. The first loss of the season is the one that I can never seem to get past. The subsequent ones are easier.

I wish I could metabolize the losses like that. I’m still frustrated over it. For that matter, I’m still frustrated over games like 2002 UF, 2005 AU, and 2009 LSU. For me, it’s the ones we could have won that hurt longer than the blowouts.

Or 2011 LSU? I realize the ultimate outcome was gory, but I actually believe the Dawgs were in near-perfect position to win it too. How do the Bengals formulate an offensive gameplan if the score is 21-0? — maybe they make mistakes in taking some chances.
Anyway, we are what we thought we were (as the man says): a team that simply can’t find a way to make the truly clutch plays when needed in highly competitive games. Been that way, for whatever reason, since the end of ’07.

Agreed. Actually, it could have been 28-0 IF Cummings doesn’t drop a sure pick-6 by Jefferson, AND if the official had made the proper call on Honey Badger as he breaks the EZ plane without the ball. That stuff in the first half was on the players, not the coaches. But relating to McGarity’s support, I’m glad of his position even though I am still VERY PO’d about Monday and almost would have had both Richt and Bobo’s heads on a platter at the end of the game if I could have. Our AD is an alum, a fan and supporter like all of us but he also has a position with serious responsibilitiesand that is why he is paid the big bucks, to make choices and decisions in a professional and dispassionate manner, NOT in the heat of the moment.

And at the end of the day, a win there in Atlanta was not getting the Dawgs into the MNCG so there’s that. Gotta hope the squad can reassert its toughness and mental edge so as not to crumble when up against the odds. The “give-ups” like ’08 UF/’09 UT/’11 LSU seem to linger on the psyche heavier than any of the more common workman-like victories.

Me too, WF. The easiest losses for me to bear are those in which we came to play, but simply got beat by a better team. Losses like Boise State, in which we looked ill-prepared and unfocused, are disappointing but are still easier to get over than losses such as this year’s losses against USC and MSU (and certainly the others you note) where we should have won if not for an unlikely (for most teams) series of self-inflicted events.

I was over the bowl game right away. They need to lock down another great recruiting class and start providing some depth are some positions. Seems like if we have a starter go down right now we dont have the quality depth to replace him and things get out of whack for a few series or quarter until we can figure it out.
Anyway, bring in another top 10 class loaded with guys like this past class and UGA will be fine…game management be damned.

If we get another class like this last one we should be fine. Between the 2 classes you would be looking at 50 faces over the 2 years. Get 4-5 guys to contribute immediately and we should be fine.
Clearly the running game needs to be fixed. whatever that means.

Raleigh, would you get over yourself and quit putting ashes in your hair? McGarity has now put everything into perspective so I don’t have to do that anymore concerning the bowl game. If you really are a guy that loves his school and team, how about helping with some of these areas instead of complaining speculative. You are now complaining about recruiting, yet you don’t heed appeals to stop intemperate attacks on recruiting coaches. How can you not tie the two efforts together? Now that McGarity has told you in print exactly what I have been posting all along (about the team as a whole is responsible, not individuals), you head on another complaining tack. Enough. If you aren’t someone trying to scratch at and injure this staff and team (like trolls and NATS-nits attempt to do) then join in to support this team in every way, including a positive attitude from the fans to let the team know that we are aware of their separate and team travails.
Our complaints solve nothing and create a breeding ground for dissention among fans that is used publically to hurt our recruiting and eventually our team. Finally McGarity puts a stop to what self examination by fans should have stopped some time ago.
I’ve written this to you and other complainers in an effort for you to see that together the fans can accomplish as much as a team (instead of waiting around for negatives to occur) and can go a long way toward solving problems we create not out of whole cloth. If you are just trying to cause angst and this appeal doesn’t strike a chord, then go fuck yourself.

I’m all in on Richt, as well. There is no better ambassador of our school and program. PERIOD. That being said, just like he allows a defensive guru to run his defense, he needs to do that same on offense. He should be CEO and let the VP of Defense and the VP of Offense run their respective ships. I’d like a VP of Offense who would not overlook the following:
What happened to P-44 fullback or whatever the play is to Bruce in the flats? Seems like either that or a naked bootleg rollout to a TE would have been a great counterpunch to the agressive nature of the Mich St defense. Thoughts?

The woes on the o-line meant the TEs were being utilized as blockers most of the game.
It’s too bad this team isn’t very good with screen plays. That would have come in handy.

Well, I hope Murray runs some screen drills in the offseason, because we are losing 3 starters on o-line, and to me this is the most glaring issue moving into 2012. Other than one line recruit so far, are we targeting any JUCO’s?

This. The lack of push up front and the inability to provide greater pocket time was the killer in this game – no question. The screen observation is spot on and as I was watching the game all I could think of was how Donnan would have lit them up with all of the pressure they were bringing. For all of Donnan’s faults, there was no better play caller and he always went to work on overly aggressive blitzing teams by gashing them with bubble screens (before they were fashionable). Think of the game against MSU (Jackie Sherrill days) with Joe Lee Dunn as the DC. MSU was favored in Sanford Stadium and it seems like GA was up 28-0 at the half (too lazy to look it up). Anyway, I always found Donnan to be a very creative play caller and typically was able to make defenses play left handed by taking away their strengths.

Hell, all we had to do was look at the other sideline to see what they were calling in the 2nd half against our aggressive pass rush. MSU ate us up with short throws to the tight end on the side of 2/3 pressuring defenders–essentially TE screens. It could have worked wonders for us as well, but it seems we’re not good enough to put together a screen play. Seems like that should be another area to work on, guys.

Since you are a Donnan (and ESPN as well) holdover fan, I suggest you go down to Lake Michigan, look eastward across the water and ponder, ” Have I become a two-bit Yankee in my heart who has no compassion for my team while they are down and I prefer kicking them by insulting their mentors?” “Am I so low as to disregard the call for fan calm from someone who is responsible for this staff being here and in negotiation to extend their contracts?” If your answer to both questions is “No.”, then get on board with some positive thinking as to how we can support this team and make this year great. If your answer is “Yes.” then see the last sentence in my reply above to Raleigh at noon.

Perhaps your commentary is centered in sarcasm, which is escaping me? If not, you should probably sit a few plays out and take some deep breaths. I never claimed to be a Donnan “fan”, nor have I ever called for Bobo’s removal or radical philosophical makeover. That said, I would hope that there is space enough on these interwebs where one can engage in nuanced discussion (i.e. acknowledging Donnan’s offensive creativity and ability to face off against blitzes, while also recognizing his “faults”) without making huge leaps. But, perhaps it is just the “Yankee” influence polluting my mind and I should engage in more concrete and binary thinking.
Lastly, despite my many efforts, I have thus far been unsuccessful in anatomically doing to myself what you suggested I do (as cited in your Raleigh reference). If you have any tips on how I can do it, I am happy to give it another shot.

What tier 1 coach would leave thier current job to take a job at program that just nuked they guy who won 10 games and has the highest winning percentage in school history (I believe that is correct — again, too lazy to research). Whatever the case, we can bitch about losing the game and not being “elite”, but one needs to be realistic and take an outside in perspective on such matters. After reading the article, I’m confident we’re on the right track. We have two class individual (McGarity and Richt) looking over the program. We’ve got plenty of work to do, but also a great foundation to build on. Wrap up another top recruiting class and let’s get to work on 2012.

I am all for keeping Richt. Bobo? Meh. I’m ready to give Mason the starting job, I no longer believe Murray is going to mature into the guy. CTG seems to be doing a good job of bringing us back to the kind of defense Georgia is accustomed to playing. The offense needs to become more aggressive in my opinion. I’m sick of playing not to lose. Let’s play to win. You can play conservatively and play the odds and still be QUITE a bit more aggressive than we’ve been the past few years. For instance, you can play possession football while throwing. Conservative and aggressive are NOT mutually exclusive. Conservative does not have to be predictable.

Again with the Bobo stuff.. He’s a Richt disciple. You’re not going to get anything different with a new guy. Richt isn’t going to hire an OC that he gives carte blanche to run things like he gives Todd Grantham with the defense. He’ll always be involved, and the playcalling will reflect what he wants. If you’re upset about Bobo, and want him to go, I think you have to say you want Richt to go.
I do share your frustration with Murray, but have to wonder how much of his performance has been influenced by the OL’ s ability to block. Perhaps it’s time to look toward Christian LeMay? I don’t know but Hutson Mason may leave anyway.

I’m afraid we have not given enough attention to the failings of o-line and the impact this has on the offense. No one seems to look here when our running backs fail to brake a tackle 3 yards in the backfield or Murray scrambles to avoid a sack and throws a pick.

This IS who CMR is. The guy who punted to BC in the Music City Bowl with under two minutes to go is the same guy that kicked a FG against Central Florida ten years later at the Liberty Bowl. He’s also the guy that bagged an offensive possession in OT to “center’ a Blair Walsh FG.
A cheetah won’t change his stripes and to think that tinkering with play calling will change CMR’s fundamental approach to football is beyond the pale.

The point I’m trying to make is that WITHIN the Richt/Bobo system we can still be more aggressive. We don’t have to be predictable. We don’t have to play with the mindset that ‘not losing’ is our highest priority. I know Bobo ain’t going anywhere. I’m just saying I ain’t real happy with him.

There is a difference between not being happy with someone and not having respect for them. I never said I had no respect for Bobo. This is a blog. The point of which is to dialogue, share opinions and occasionally vent our frustrations within a like minded community. That’s all I intend. Mike Bobo has probably already forgotten more about football than I will ever know. That doesn’t preclude me or anyone else from expressing our opinion. I ain’t a coach. I write code, design and create websites. Lots of people with no design credentials or code writing skills get to critique my work on a daily basis. That’s their right. It’s the way life works. I suspect something similar may be true in your line of work as well. Bobo is a big boy. He understands that getting criticism from the likes of me comes with the territory. I doubt he loses any sleep over it. He has much more important things to worry about. I did like the poop story by the way.

My curmudgeon attitude towards some posts is not to preserve Bobo’s feelings. People can be critical and still not create fodder for the recruiting game. I pass by many Bobo-critical comments and try to get posters to feel responsible toward the football team at certain sensitive periods. From now to Feb is a recruitment period. Act like you care and help the team.
Some of the anti-Bobo sentiment is carried forward by trolls to make it appear that the fan base anti-Bobo numbers are larger. Opinion and the right to xpress it is not what I differ with. I differ with the egos who don’t care whether there is a good time or a bad time to furnish ammo to our rivals, then come back to imply the recruiting is going badly due to the coaching staff’s inadequacies. They insist on making their predictions come true. Yeah, I miss on some comments, but I would think that you might embrace a few aimed toward obvious trolls trying only to repetitively mention and embellish anti-Bobo remarks just as they did last year toward Richt. More than one recruit has reported knowing of fan-base remarks that have kept them on the fence or gone elsewhere because they don’t know if Richt will be here. The same goes for Bobo who is now recruiting hard and who has players looking up to him for mentoring. Jamming these negative comments in just because you can is not the point. My request is for you to hold your powder and not help the interlopers from Atlanta. After Feb 1 I could give a big rat’s.

D N, I think a lot of people’s frustration with Murray is his seeming inability to make good decisions in pressure situations. He either holds on to the ball too long or he tries to force the ball into coverage. His accuracy leaves a lot to be desired as well.
As I understand it, Mason’s strengths are quick decision making and accuracy. It certainly seems natural for some fans to want to see if Mason can mature into the starting job; Murray doesn’t seem to show the steady improvement in that area I personally want to see.
Let me be clear on one thing- I don’t care who starts at UGA. Mason, Murray, or Lemay- just let them show good decision making, ball security, and the occasional spectacular play.

And as I said previously, I don’t have a Dawg in the fight. If Murray’s the guy, he’s my guy. If he’s not, then whoever is is my guy.
It seems to me that the people clamoring for Hutson Mason are not pro-Mason so much as anti-Murray. That rationale seems flimsy to make a change.

Murray has the stats, no doubt. He is, by all accounts, a great guy and a hard worker. While I realize it’s a team game and we can’t heap all the blame or credit upon one person, for two years now Murray has consistently faltered in big games. He’s made bad decisions and given up points pretty much every time. This we know. Know much about the other guys? Not really. But I’m ready to give them a chance. Might we do worse? Sure. But we might do better. There are lots of folks who know a lot more than me, but that’s my opinion. Give them the ball and see what happens. If nothing else, perhaps it motivates Murray to do better.

With a two-year starter at quarterback and no experience to speak of at the position behind him, you don’t make a change to see what happens. You make a change because you don’t think the starter is salvageable.

I think the understandable frustration is that we are still waiting for Murray to lead us on a comeback, signature win. That being said, what I don’t understand is how you can be calling for the backup at this point. Murray has a great skill set. And he has a ton of heart. He’s been hit a lot the past two years. He always gets back up.
I have said this many times before. I really trust Richt when it comes to QB’s. If he says Murray is better than Mason, I trust that. Look who he’s coached and how they’ve performed, from two heisman winners at FSU, to Shockley, Greene, Stafford, etc at UGA.

I fail to see why criticism from fans is so disgusting and irrational to you. The rants and vents (however misguided they may be at times) proves their passion for this program. Lack of passion = apathy. Is that what you would like to see from our fanbase? Or would you simply prefer everyone to mindlessly fall into your way of thinking? We all know that CMR will remain the HC here until 2016 per his extension. No one has called for his position. These fans are simply questioning the calls from CMR and CMB. I would assume very few people know one another on this blog, so how do we know one’s football knowledge? Unless you are actually CMR or CMB, I do not understand your frustration. And if you are either one, maybe you should spend more time with the team and playbook and less on the interweb.

Cojones shows himself time and time again to be a classic jocksniffer–someone who derives a sense of satisfaction and power from aligning himself with those that are famous, powerful, etc. It seems he delusionally views his role as some sort of necessary protector of CMR and other members of the coaching staff from all those bad fans that have the gall to question anything about the program. I wouldn’t be surprised if he keeps a little notebook beside his computer to note who’s with him and who’s against him (his frequent references to “allies” and “enemies” suggest such) in this mission.
As a hero-worshipper and devout follower, he probably spends more time collecting and displaying paraphernalia, writing fan letters, seeking autographs, and proving to himself and others what a big “fan” he than does actually watching Georgia football games or gaining any type of interesting or critical insight into the game. Kind of how a little girl might be a “fan” of Justin Bieber or unicorns or just about anything with a poster she can stick on a wall. Of course, most little girls don’t tell other fans who don’t worship in the exact same way to go fuck themselves or to drop dead as Cojones has done on this comment section.

I got over it before it was played. I took to heart the fact that MSU has a good team and we were in for a rough night. Nothing happened during the game to change my mind about UGA or MSU teams playing in the Outback Bowl. I enjoyed the football game between two evenly-matched opponents. They made good and bad D, O and ST plays; we made good and bad D, O and ST plays. MSU won. End of story.
Last night’s game was the 3rd example in as many nights that college ball is decided on the field and only by those playing the game.

Everything is better when the Dawgs can run the ball effectively. The inconsistency on offense begins when they can’t establish the run early in the game. We have some very talented run-blockers coming in, Theus in particular. And probably the JUCO, Beard, will be good for that, too. And I’m very thankful that Keith Marshall will be available for spring practice.
I think the folks who are complaining about the conservative nature of the playcalling are forgetting about the MSU pass rush. Our quarterback must have time and our running backs needs holes opened up.

Absolutely. Give Murray a running game and a legitimate offensive line and none of you clowns would be calling for Mason…or Bobo’s head. After reading the comments in the wake of this loss, I have no doubt in my mind that even if we won the national championship that some of you would still be bitchin’ about the way we won our games, how conservative we were, how weak the East was, etc. Y’all get over it and enjoy the fact that we may not be LSU or ‘Bama, but we sure as hell aint UT of UF right now.

He didn’t break the TD record he shattered it. Not saying we should wait this long if there are several seasons like last year but Tom Osborne at Nebraska was talked about a lot as a guy who couldn’t win it all. All he did was win 3 National Titles in 4 years and put together what many (including myself) believe was the best team ever in 1995. I think he won his first national title about 22 years into coaching them after a lot of 10 win seasons and losing a lot when it “counted”.

To paraphrase AD GM “if blair makes the fg we’re here feeling good about ourselves but our dynamics haven’t changed” that quote to me hits the nail on the head. Frankly all of his quotes were on the money. My biggest concern is if Murray can take better care of the ball and if we can fix oline special teams. As much flack as I want to give Bobo and Murray doess anyone else realize we can win consistently even if it’s not pretty if we just don’t put the defense in bad situations?

Is your D in a good or bad position if you’ve left the other team inside their 20, less than 2 minutes, no timeouts, and behind by 7?
Just saying the other side of the coin on all of this is that the D needs to finish the drill when they have the game on the line too. CTG said as much.

Good comeback, AusDawg, but weren’t you two briefly on the other side the last two days? Not complaining , understand, just trying to become unconfused by the split personality postings I have seen since the Outback. AusDawg, I’ve considered you to be an ally vs the naysayers and you have backed me up before, but I haven’t seen much backup in the last couple of days of posting except for the usual guardhouse lawyers asking why I’m AWOL (just kidding guys).

Well magic monkey balls…I’d say I’m neither Disney nor Doomsayer. I’m consistent that CMR is our guy. Not perfect, but I’ll take him with 10 – 11 wins multiple seasons vs what Auburn did, or living with Saban, etc. As for Bobo….my point is we can do better. But some of the negative hounds don’t know how to stay on balance at times. As much as I also hated the conservative play calling at the end of the game (which is under CMR’s orders, not just Bobo) the truth is that the D ALSO had the game won as much as Blair…and blew it. Look at CTG’s post-game interview….that steam coming off his head is not about the O letting him down (as many here suggest). He knows his guys failed to seal the thing when everything was in their favor. Looked like the Arky game last year, no?

I agree. I even think we can do better while keeping Bobo. He has shown flashes of brilliance but he doesn’t seem to trust himself. Grantham appears to be consistently moving in the right direction. He ain’t where he wants to be just yet but the train is gaining positive momentum. Bobo, on the other hand, seems to be all over the map. We can play generally conservative football philosophically and still be more aggressive. We don’t have to be predictable. We can play with an attitude that says ‘we came here to win’ instead of ‘we came here not to lose.’ The one characteristic that has consistently defined Georgia football, at least in my lifetime, has been heart. Win or lose, The Dawgs leave everything on the field. They never give up. They play with tremendous heart. Think back to the Carolina game this year. Many were encouraged despite the loss because of the way the team played. They played with a passion we hadn’t seen in a while. The past few seasons, that passion seems to mysteriously disappear for long stretches when our offense is on the field. That’s what I find frustrating. Bobo is the OC so that complaint gets laid at his feet. May not be entirely fair but it’s part of the responsibility that comes with accepting leadership..

Hard to disagree with this. Murray really looks good when he’s got time. But when he doesn’t, he gets antsy and his mechanics suffer and then it goes to shit. Beyond that, though, I admire the kid’s heart and toughness.

And this is where my criticism lies … not with Murray, but rather with the deploymnet of the available weapons. If the O line is getting beat, why continue to call medium passes? Why not a WR screen, tunnel screen or Y-out from the I formation? And why in the heck do you line up Richard Samuel in the shotgun with trips and send him off tackle? He’s a down hill runner & needs to be power running.

The last bomb to King was a fantastic call. The play had Murray roll right out of the pocket while keeping the FB in to seal the backside.
That is a good example of deploying the avaiable weapons in a manner that expoits the defense, which had no fear of the run and was flying to the QB on every play.

The problem being of course that Coac Richt’s abysmal game management combined with his reluctance to hire competent staff combined with his inferior recruiting means that we will no be elite again under his stewardship. McGarity has just assured that UGA football will be nothing better than above average.
Its time to lower expectations. We won’t be scaling the heights of LSU or Alabama any time soon, if ever.
It would be an upset of gargantuan proportions if UGA ever wins another SECCG under Coac Richt.

MSU was a good team, with a good coach. When it started going wrong, I expected the loss. The Spartans were due a close W. I am not worried about that–that happens with youngish teams.
I would like to formally request the retirement of the term “all in.” It reeks of Gene Chizik–and I can’t stand it anymore.

I got over the Outback Bowl as soon as the last kick hit that Spartan’s mitt. Sure, the kneeldown in the 1st OT was a chickenshit move, and the football gods made us pay. But Richt made many more gutsy calls this year than he has in years past, particularly in Jacksonville, that lead me to think he is gradually becoming more aggressive, even if the occasional nutlessness still remains.
I’m already deep into anticipation. Gonna be a long 8 months. As said in the comments of yesterday’s posts, the players, coaches, and now the AD are all saying the right things, from their respective perspectives.
An opportunity like the schedule we have this fall doesn’t come along often. If we get strong production out of Theus, Beard, and [a true freshman RB], we could really make a run. As to that fill-in-the-blank in the previous sentence, it’s great that Marshall will be at spring practice, but from viewing highlight reels of both him and Davis, I’d be more excited if we can land the latter. Marshall reminds me of Eric Dickerson, an upright runner with deceptive speed as long as he gets in space. Davis is a BYOB guy (be your own blocker), with stop-and-start cuts that can make up for missed assignments by the OL.

We aren’t getting rid of Richt or Bobo and even if Bobo was let go, his replacement would be under the same conservative constraints as Bobo is now. UGA is what it is and will be for as long as Richt is the coach. Time to embrace it and hope you are young enough to see us back into a NC at some point.

CMR has given total control to CTG and it saved his job, so I’m not accepting the meme that we can’t give total control to a new OC and can’t do better than Bobo. Of course, CMR isn’t compelled to change OC’s now that our D can carry the team to a sufficent number of wins to placate the fanbase. So I don’t see any significant changes coming. But I also agree with others that we won’t be challenging for the mnc. We’re in CMR’s ‘happy place’ of 10 wins per year and once-in-a-while getting to the secc.

Still got that herb garden going there Big Ones? I think the big picture for the offense is fine. It’s the little details that kill the Dawgs. A false start here and a hold there, a missed block, an open receiver missed, a WR running the wrong route resulting in an int, those little errors are maddening. Mistakes kill drives and suck the energy right out of the team. It’s almost like the players expect something dreadful to happen and ergo, it does. Murray has to learn to control his emotions better because if he shows frustration or panics the team will follow suit. You should not be able to read a QB’s facial expressions and body language and know the score of the game.

True words, shane, and we all hurt by knowing. We all are wishing and hoping for a good line in front of these guys, but injury and other shit seems to happen before that occurs. We have to sit by and watch the season develop and play out. And it is frustrating no end.
