Woodrow Clemons capitulates and his grandson’s LOI is on its way to Athens.
“I spoke to my grandfather last night and told him, just so we would be on the same page,” Harvey-Clemons said Wednesday. “I talked about distance with my family, which is large, and I think they like Florida better because it is closer to home and easier to come to the games. But I had my mind made up, and it was a wrap after that.”
I think the next time we have one of those debates about moving the Florida game out of Jacksonville, I’m going to have to invoke Mr. Clemons’ name. He’s got to be happy there’s at least one short drive a year.

I’m sorry, but I’m just not buying grandpa’s b.s. His own grandson wants to play at UGA, publicly announces it, has a hat ceremony, CMR visits the church and goes to the jail to kiss up to this guy, and grandpa has his boxers in a bunch. Why? Because he has to drive a little further to see his grandson play foortball? He must not want to see him play that badly. Hey grandpa, this is not about you.

I find his reasoning incredibly selfish, or completely disengenous and really had some other reason. So he’s a narcissist, or a liar. Pick one.

Agreed. And I’m paranoid about Richt’s recruiting visit the way granpa stayed around him all the time and sent him to cover the bail when granpa could have gone instead. He effectively took away Richt’s precious time to interface with the player. Something’s rotten in Denmark.
The size of the donation into the church plate was emphasized as to Muschamp’s visit. Is this another Cecil Newton trick to pick up money from the recruiters for his church? Was Muschamp’s contribution in a thick envelope and Richt’s came from out-of-pocket money? Did that dictate the scenario of the ill-timed call to the church as if it was planned ahead of time? Gainesville and Tallahassee are both close enough for him to grow his business and get publicity for it. I was chafing last night that something ain’t right here.

I am definately calling shenanigans on this one. It is not as though the kid wanted to sign with Oregon or Cal, where distance and expense are material considerations. I am too lazy to do Google Maps, but just assuming there is an incremental distance of 2hrs from Valdosta to Athens vs. Gainesville (which seem too large, but whatever). I, grandad, are going to block where my grandson wants to spend his life (and risk body and mind on the field) for the next 3-4yrs because I don’t want to drive an extra couple of hours 6-7 times per year or 18-25x over the course of the next 3-4 years?
Really, that is what we are going with here??

Totally agree. Ironically, I think the best thing that will come out of this for Josh going to UGA, is now he is the furtherest away, from his Grandfather’s influence. Maybe Josh became his own man yesterday! GATA Josh.

If I’m a linebacker or defensive back in the state of Georgia or the southeast, I matriculate to UGA. If I’m one of those players, D1 programs know I can play, and have the tools to play, well, I matriculate to UGA. Especially if I plan to play on Sundays.
Why? If there is a better defensive staff in the entire D1 programs better than this current staff, well, I’m not an expert, but I think I know solid coaching when I see it. This staff can coach you up. If you do not think so, look back at how they handled the players, developed them, and put them into position to show off their skills.
Josh is a talented young man. But better than that, he is smart and saavy. He is a player. I will miss him in 1-AAAAAA, commonly known as the “SEC” in Georgia high school football.

I have a baby girl, and I would never stand in the way of where she wanted to attend school, (unless that school is Florida or Tech, in which case I’ll lay in front of her car until she changes her mind.)

From what we’ve read it appears that Josh’s grand-dad made a mistake. Josh handled it well though & his grand-dad capitualted.
I know I’ve made mistakes as a parent, and I’ve admitted it when I realized it. Let’s assume something similar happened here …

I think some folks here are being a bit tough on Mr. Clemons. We don’t know all the facts or circumstances. That he’s a relatively young grandfather and that the children’s parents are deceased suggests a complicated background, at the least. And yet, from what little I can see, these kids have their heads on straight.
Remember, not everyone views Athens with the fondness that most of us do. I dated a girl in my freshman year who grew up in the country, albeit only 30 miles or so from Athens, and her friends and family (no college grads among them) looked on the Classic City as a bit glittery and slightly dangerous–our romance only survived a few weeks after she fled the place! And if some of us sometimes suspect that the ACC PD have it in for students generally and athletes in particular, don’t you think a doting (grand)parent 4 1/2 hours away would share that concern?
Mr. Clemons seems to have raised a fine young man who is also a great athlete. We should respect him for that and let it go.

Good response. And at the risk of being skewered by some, let’s be honest…FL, AU, Bama, LSU and Spurrier have rings to flash. Recruiting is NEVER going to be easy for us with #1 players, in-state or not. We need the Dream Team and/or Ring Team to finish the drill soon.

Are you serious? Athens is hardly the Las Vegas of the Southeast. I love that it’s quaint and doesn’t have big city traffic and crime, yet still has restaurants and bars worth going to. My God, kids who hail from dirt road villages in China don’t consider it “glittery and dangerous”.
