Saturday morning buffet

There’s always something to nosh on.

  • Roy Kramer proposes a plus-one format that’s built to last:  “Using Kramer’s model in a 2011 plus-one, No. 1 LSU would have played No. 10 Wisconsin and No. 2 Oklahoma State would have faced No. 3 Oregon in the semifinals. No. 2 Alabama, No. 4 Stanford, No. 6 Arkansas, No. 7 Boise State, No. 8 Kansas State and No. 9 South Carolina all failed to win their conference. “  I didn’t say it would last long.
  • The Texas Supreme Court shoots down Mike Leach’s appeal of his suit against Texas Tech on grounds of sovereign immunity.  Remind me again why a head coach would want to sign a contract with a state school that evidently isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on.
  • The NCAA narrowly – and I mean narrowly – avoids having its new rule on multi-year scholarships overturned by its membership.  There’s a fault line opening up here worth keeping an eye on.  (And note the comment about the Department of Justice.)
  • Mark Richt admits he’s checked out at least one football website.
  • Kevin Sumlin kept one eye on the new SEC oversigning rule as he put together his first recruiting class at Texas A&M.
  • Tennessee gets short shrift at the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.  Not that the Vols haven’t necessarily earned it:  “The schools gave up home games in the hopes of getting primetime, big boy coverage on a major network.  Instead, the Vols and Wolfpack will serve as the hors d’oeuvre to the Tigers versus Tigers main course the following day.  It makes sense for the Chick-fil-A group and for the networks, but it’s a kick in the teeth for UT…”
  • This seems a little over the top, Nick.

Clearly you people lack a full understanding of the process. We will be opening a series of mini-reeducation camps near you very soon.

Off Topic But: It looks like the Missouri Tigers will be the #1 seed in the NCAA Basketball tournament. If they keep up the trend in future years, it might be fun to watch the reactions of a certain blue clad colleague which has Alabama size hubris and sense of entitlement.

Mike Leach isn’t eating hamburger, but he wasn’t much of a lawyer, or didn’t have much of a lawyer, when he negotiated that contract. Immunity can usually be waived by contract. For a million dollar salary it’s worth the attention.

I wondered about that. Who did Lame have or did the UT AD make that deal way too easy? At any rate The Pirate might want to reconsider who his partners are and chose someone capable of dealing with the immunity thing!

I don’t understand the problem with the UT/NCSt change, it is good for football fans. What I don’t understand is ESPN putting it on ESPNU. I understand some grumbling about the Friday night thing, but let’s face it, not many of us go to HS football games. I like the idea, and wish they had done something like that to UGA/Boise, although Thursday night would have been a better alternative at that time of the year.

ESPN/ABC must have been drinking “stupid juice” to schedule the LSU/Oregon contest in the exact same time slot with UGA/Boise last fall. Let’s see, how can I take the two best match-ups of the weekend and minimize the viewing audience? Do you ever remember the NFL scheduling both playoff games in the time slot against one another? Seems like a good decision to me, but at least put it on ESPN 2.

I love kramer’s format. It would ramp up every conference game and make non conference games crucial for seeding.

    • And it’ll expand to eight almost immediately. The bitching that would go on with those results would dwarf what we’ve heard over the past five seasons.

Hell…I challenge anyone to make a definitive case how any one of the teams ranked 4 – 10 would have been “most” deserving of a 4th playoff spot last year.

So now you’re up to 16 teams to “get it right”.

To your point Senator (and despite my inherent dislike for any slippery slope argument), I can see a weekly half hour ESPN show documenting the process and stoking outrage for the ‘deserving teams’ that get left out. And honestly, who can blame them? Ratings would be thru the roof. Until the ratings started to drop, then you would see a almost immediate playoff expansion.

Any playoff format based on conference champions would be terrible for the SEC. So these crappy declining conferences get a spot in the final four? Screw that. I would rather just use the top 4 or top 8 ranked teams, or a selection committee. Keep in mind the Big Ten is terrible right now. Either Wisconsin and OSU would be in the semi-finals every year. That’s complete bs.

And what about these teams that do not have conference championship games? Oklahoma State did not even have to play such an elimination game. The Big 12 now has a tiebreaker rule that declares its winner as the highest ranked team in the first Bowl Championship Series poll following the completion of Big 12 regular season conference play. That is a huge advantage.

I can’t believe you guys would support the very “must win conference” doctrine that screwed the dawgs a few years ago.

I absolutely would support it, and I don’t think the Dawgs got screwed in 2007. We screwed ourselves by losing to mediocre South Carolina and Tennessee teams.

’07 BCSNC and SEC Champion LSU lost 2 games too and one was to KENTUCKY for cryin’ out loud. If the Vandy kicker doesn’t doink Vandy’s game winning kick over UT off the upright UT loses that game, UGA wins the SEC East and UGA plays LSU (and I say beats them) in the SECCG and then wins the BCSNCG that year.

Tenn vs NC St. Whore’s overs , indeed.

Greenpeace and Save Our Forests would like to talk to Nick concerning the disregard for how many trees are cut down in order to recruit one athlete. Unless, of course , they were composed of recycled toilet paper. How many letters do you think it will take to let him know he has been pushed out of the recruiting class and suggest to use the extra mailings for toilet paper?

The Dawgs have offered a local boy, Trenton Brown, a product of Albany’s Westover HS. Trenton has played one year at Georgia Military and is listed at 6’7″ and 330lbs. Come to UGA Trenton, in case you haven’t heard offensive linemen are in demand there.

I’ll bet Paula Dean can recruit him with sweet potato pie and sour cream fried chicken. I say we ask Miss Paula to mosey on over and maybe drop a Smithfield Ham on somebody. Since our recruiting motto is “Stomach First- the Heart and Mind Are Sure to Follow”, we ought to take advantage of the good cookin’ proximity and show Saban what aggressive recruitin’ is all about.
