You’ve got to like how the AJ-C‘s recruiting page can go in one day from breathlessly reporting that Alabama stole Tyren Jones right out from under Mark Richt’s nose to the sad story that another in state recruit was told that Georgia isn’t taking any more running backs in its 2013 class because the Dawgs were only taking one (Derrick Henry).
It’s a tough job, keeping those page hits at the AJ-C coming, but somebody’s got to do it.

Exactly, in this day with instant access to many sources of information (local, national, and international) why in the world would anyone depend on sources hired by the AJC? There was a time where folks had to have the daily paper to keep pace with everything happening in their community, now they can know instantly what is going on under a street light three blocks away and never leave their recliner or read a word printed on paper. Yet many need someone, willing to hitch their wagon to a dying industry and probably has an agenda, to interpret what is happening in a sport they know more about. Haven’t bought an AJC in 17 years, and never bought a NY Times…even when traveling there.

Some people depend on it as their only source of free recruiting news. Most of the steady recruiting coverage comes from paysites, though there are a few blogs around that cover recruiting now.
Either way, the AJC is a joke w/r/t its coverage of Georgia. There’s no getting around that.

I actually begrudgingly read Carvell sometimes. The most off-putting thing about his work to me are his headlines, and I’m not sure who actually writes those.
Like you say, it’s a way to get recruiting news when most other sites charge for it. I don’t love it, but he does come through with stories every now and then. Getting all those coaches to make James Franklin look like an ass about the Josh Dawson situation comes to mind. Somehow, he gets a lot of people to talk to him, so I don’t mind reading his stories for that and just ignoring most of his commentary.

For those of us who do not wish to financially fund a group with an agenda counter to our well being, or support distorted journalism, it does reflect well on me. Doesn’t mean I don’t read excerpts from articles from either the NYT, or the AJC on occasion, but unlike the sheep who rely on them exclusively for their news, believe they offer an enlightened view,and formulate opinions based on questionable reports, I read/listen to a variety of other sources.
Not going to debate this with you on this forum, just commenting to another poster about the number of times I read complaints about the AJC when it is self-imposed. If you are of the mindset that the Leftist NYT is a good source for news, there is no discussing this topic with you.

Hell, I thought The Times was bought by folks with a politically right lean. I may be getting confuseed with the Wall St J, but could have sworn that rightest leaning press moguls were gobbling (not goblin) up all printed matter so they could run (not ruin) the minds and hearts of everyone (if yall don’t tell’em about the Internet, I won’t).

WSJ perusing belongs to the trade for years now, and its news coverage hasn´t changed remarkably since the News Corp takeover. One term of the deal, of course, was that Murdoch would leave reporting as he found it.
The opinion section, on the other hand, changed noticeably. Take the same talking points that are on Fox, throw in a little econ/finance trade slang, and present it all in the “these-people-are-clearly-subhuman” tone of the Daily Caller or NY Post. I get more usable material talking to my grandmother, although at least the WSJ now offers a heads-up on the new arguments my Wall St friends will be wearing.
But I have to hand it to Murdoch, the man´s an opinion-generating machine. If you don´t agree, go hang out with your Leftist comrades!

There are an awful lot of newspapers. Don’t know that I have bought a NYT….. borrowed a few. The Economist isn’t in the top 100….but I have purchased several.

Agree with Richt that we’re pretty well set at RB, and I don’t mind us passing on this guy. I will say that after undersigning so drastically this year, Richt HAS to fill all 28 slots for this next class. Playing 10 schollies down isn’t exactly a recipe for success.

I noticed that comment about how Henry might backcount as well. Not only was it a slap at Richt’s character, it was also just plain idiotic from a numbers standpoint. The only reason UGA would be trying to squeeze Henry into this year’s class would be if they didn’t have any open scholarships available. Unfortunately, that isn’t a “problem”. The fact is that UGA has PLENTY of running backs now, but they are very short in other areas. It doesn’t really matter what class Harvey counts in. The sad fact is that even if UGA maximizes signees next February in every way possible, they will quite likely still be short of 85 legitimate scholarships.

I watched Henry go for 300yds against defending state champs TCA here in Duval. Kid is a man playing with boys. Reminds me of Arian Foster with his stride but with more power. Guy will shatter every record here in Florida when he is done.

Notice nobody writes crap like this about Bama and LSU and they sure as hell won’t write crap like this about an SEC champ Georgia that beats an LSU or Bama. In fact, if Georgia wins big in 2012 the AJC will be the first to glorify us as the “good guy” program that does it right, followed by ESPN.

There really is a vital role for newspapers and journalism and I for one hope that I am never left to rely on the internet and blogs for my news.
The AJC has done some fine reporting with regards to the state of child care in the state and that isnt reporting that any blog would ever be able to do. The amount of work and money that went into that series was beyond the scope of anything but traditional print media.
Most blogs can’t afford to do actual reporting, but rather rely on other reporting to create their content.

True, sir, and your words are well taken. Good reporting can be found printed in the NYT as well. Only this has to do with the “sports reporting” headlines that drag us in as if UGA has committed themselves to not recruiting in state. And before anyone takes off on that meme, please investigate closely between the sensationalized and UGA-pointed headlines they use to get you to read and also spread false negative information as to how we recruit. They are incorrect factually and plant ideas that are spurrious for those who don’t get info elsewhere.

I quit the AJC when they tried to start a “Quarteback controversy” when Shockley was playing behind DG. That was purely and simply contrived bullshit designed to sell papers, hurt UGA and cause a stir.

Did anyone see his article from a few days ago when the RB committed to Bama? He said Bama’s number one recruiting class just signed was largely made up of Georgia recruits. Between that statement and the one about the kid choosing UCLA over Georgia (after we refused to accept his offer) I just don’t understand. Is he stupid or just a dick? I think it may be a bit of both.

While obtaining a cat for my wife at Partners for Pets, an attendant opened the floor cage of a cat that was playing with my trouser leg. As I protested, the cat wound “figure-8s” through my legs and “Oreo” , showing his quickly-learned institutionalized savvy soon accompanied “Peaches” home with us. When entering the house, Oreo encountered our alpha female dog long enough to carve a “Z” on her nose. Instantly he became “Zorro” (black mask and all) which was sonorously like Oreo given at PFP.
The point? He now is comfortably ensconced as “Zorro, the Gay Blade” having undergone a similar operation to the Bulldog’s. Ay-yi-MEOW!! But Priscilla, the alpha female, still smiles at him in passing. She is one vengeful bitch.
