What would it be like having a Hall of Fame wide receiver coaching our wideouts, in contrast to a former running back? No offense to the current guys, but wouldn’t you like to see what he would do coaching downfield blocking? How about showing off his Superbowl rings on a recruiting visit?

I’m not so sure Hines is a lock for the Hall of Fame, personally. If Chris Carter isn’t in, then Hines won’t be either, imho.

Gotta disagree there. If Hines Ward and his (how many exactly is it?) multiple Super Bowl rings don’t get into the Hall then the damn thing should be disbanded.

What does being a Super Bowl MVP have to do with being in the Hall of Fame? There are plenty of MVPs not in the HofF.

Being on a Super Bowl winning team doesn’t mean much regarding Hall of Fame worthiness, imo.
There are only roughly 20 modern era WRs in the HoF, iirc. There are a lot of good WRs not in the Hall – I wouldn’t be surprised if Hines was another.

OK, let’s resolve this right now. Hines Ward is the all-time leader for the Steelers (the NFL team with the most Super Bowl appearances-8 and most victories-6) in receptions, yards by receiving and TDs by receiving, eclipsing all the records previously held by 2 Pittsburgh Steelers players who are already in the Hall (John Stallworth and Lynn Swann). He has over 12000 yards receiving. He was MVP in the Super Bowl. He also has 2 Super Bowl rings. If you don’t think that qualifies the guy to be in the NFL Hall of Fame all you have done is show that you don’t know sh!t about football.

Hines Ward likely will one day be in Canton. But he’s not as automatic as you’d like to think… Go back and look how long it took for Art Monk to get into the HoF.
Monk had similar stats in an earlier, less pass-happy era: +12k yards, 940 receptions, 3 Super Bowls, retired as the all-time leader in receptions and consecutive games with a reception (183). Monk also was a 3x Pro Bowler (vs Ward’s 4; this again was in a smaller league when there were less people passing on the Hawaii trip) and was 2x First-Team All Pro (vs Hines 3x Second-Team All-Pro).
It still took Art Monk 13 years to get voted in.

Agree. I feel he has a case, I just don’t think he is a lock, which obviously means I “don’t know sh*t about football.” :rollseyes:
Playing in a pass happy era won’t help him. He wasn’t even one of best WRs of the 2000s, according to the same people who vote for the HofF. Hines was a great WR in the NFL, but there is currently a waiting list of receivers to get in, all of which I feel had better careers than Hines. Hines only really had one dominant season – 2002.
And, yeah, “Mayor,” (referring to the above post) comparing Ward’s stats to the stats of players in the 70s is totally a legit comparison.

Obviously you don’t like Hines Ward for some reason which you prefer to keep a secret. The good thing is that you don’t have a vote for the Hall so what you think or say on the subject means nothing. And I never said he was a “lock” to get in. I said he deserved to get in. BTW, I agree that there are several players who are not in the Hall who should be, which speaks poorly for the Hall IMHO. Let’s hope that the Hall doesn’t screw over Hines Ward–a DGD.

Brother, the thing ain’t worth a damn until #34 is in it. And for those of you who have been to Canton, you know just how frustrating it is to have to go to the “non-NFL room” to even find evidence of his existence.

And he was a complete football player. One of the best blockers in the league and humble, two things that can not be said about “me first” C. Carter.
If the NFL Hall of Fame is about having football players than H Ward belongs.

There are only 7 WRs (just looked it up) that played after 1970 who are in the Hall. Andre Reed, Tim Brown, and Chris Carter all were superior receivers and none are in the Hall.

I think he’s in b/c SB rings, other things beside receiving- ie downfield blocking & all the Steeler team receiving records he holds. Don’t have them in front of me – but to hold multiple records on a storied franchise (as opposed to the Cardinals or Falcons, etc) will get him in.

Between the players listed above, and the likes of Moss and Owens, there’s a line to get in that Hines will be at the back of, imho. Great Dawg nonetheless.

Well, the NCAA limits the number of coaches paid or volunteer by rule and there is no way Mark Richt throws a current coach under the bus. But, you can just create him some random BS job and wait until a coach leaves… A “position coach in waiting” for 115k/year?

If HW is truly interested, he enrolls in graduate classes and joins the staff as a GA for a couple of years. If everything clicks, then you make room on the coaching staff for him.
As a GA, he can’t go on the road and recruit, but he sure can meet with kids when they come to Butts-Mehre.

Hiney Wine. Made famous during the LA Olympics by a nationally known DJ, the famous Hiney Wine was shilled on the radio with(approx.) : “We have many visitors from all over the world gracing our city , so, I want you ladies to go out and buy a bottle and share a little Hiney.” ; “Ladies, let our visitors know how much we appreciate them by giving them some Hiney”, etc , for weeks.
They still talk about the famous Hiney Wine made in the LA area.

I’m pretty sure we dont even need to pay Ward. Clearly if Ward really wanted more money he would have found someone in the NFL willing to give him some money.
Also for all those who seem to hate our WR and RB coaches. Look at our WR line up. How many guys last year were able to come out and contribute. Yea, you can talk about Wooten and Brown, but I think Brown had head issues/talent gap issues and Wooten just seems to have the injury bug. Murray had plenty of weapons last year. I know MM is quite talented, but I am sure our coach helped to hone some of that talent.
RB: I think the events of the past year and half can show that no one was gonna do much with that. Ealey and King were lost causes(one hated comp and the other struggled mightily with classes). CT seems to be a solid RB, yea he aint going up the gut with it for 4-5 yards, but I’m pretty sure the RB coach wasnt calling those plays. I mean when Crowell played with his head on he was pretty solid.
Either way, I am sure HW being there is pepping the guys up big time. Maybe a bit of his attitude will rub off for some of our guys.

I thought Wooten was out last year with a single injury: concussion. Doesn’t mean he hadn’t trained well or had lots of bad luck–he had an instance of dangerously bad luck. I was glad the staff put his welfare first, but it must be a pretty scary injury to sideline him for most of the year (I think he was going to get a medical redshirt). I hope he’ll get to play this season, and that this isn’t an injury that has ramifications for him later in life.

I asked about the Recruiter job and whether it had been filled. Best answer seemed to be,” Not yet”. I like the Grad School idea and taking courses in coaching as well. Would help in oral communication. Hines has an identifiable pleasant voice that many parents would swoon to as much as a recruit. Certainly the fervor is building for his presence on our campus that could progress toward coaching here.
He’s certainly a fresh breeze when compared to Tarkinton. But I guess that goes for most anyone, even Skeptic Dawg.
