You can lead a Dawg to water…

The propensity of young men to ignore advice and direction is one of the constants of the universe.

Starting linebacker Alec Ogletree and starting safety Bacarri Rambo will miss at least two games, but up to as many as four games, at the start of the season for a violation of team rules.

The length of those penalties tells me this isn’t their first time at the rodeo.

Lakatos and Grantham look to have their work cut out for them, don’t they?

Missouri is going to put up at least 35 on us. I’d say 42-45. What a sad way to destroy a promising season.

This wouldn’t be an issue if we had more than 52 scholarship players returning this fall. As it is, our 2-deep is 1-deep in a few too many key places.

I’m going to really start laughing when the coaches realize this creates a depth problem at ILB, and decide to move Samuel back to Defense.

Keep this fresh and handy, simply change the year and the names and you have University of Georgia football every September.

Same tired ass story every single year. Not like we had much to play for this year.

Great. Not only will Mizzou be jacked & 1st SEC game & and new next-Randy-Moss reciever & all that, but I imagine Aaron Rogers lil brother is licking his chops too. This blows & it’s not even April. Will they have enough warm bodies for the spring game?

Oh yeah, I decided against it this year and couldn’t be happier about my decision.

The direction of UGA athletics has been clear for awhile now.

Between the new scheduling theories and the constant competitive hamstringing, I just didn’t see the point in paying that much money for an increasingly average product.

Well it does seem to happen every year. I am terribly disappointed that it was an All-American that exhibited the level of stupidity Rambo did to get suspended again. His NFL stock just went south faster than WT Sherman. No NFL team is going to use a high draft choice on somebody that has issues with how they handle their business.

    It must drive richt crazy.

Mcgarity’s got to figure something out, though. We need to be pushing for standardized policies across the conference. The bottom line is that honey badger would have been kicked off our team last year. He sat one game for the tigers.

Our guys aren’t dumber than everyone else’s, we just punish harsher than anyone else. The rest of the conference’s punishment for these things is: “don’t do that.”

It’d be nice if we could just be smarter. I was dumb at 20, but I wasn’t that dumb.

This. Our policies are just tougher than everyone else’s. Can’t change them or we’d look hypocritical. But yes it does suck. And to everyone who is mad about a 20 year old smoking weed (not doing coke, or heroin, or anything else), seriously get over yourself.

I get it about “get over yourself”. My 20 year old just got accepted by Terry Business College. He has aspirations of law school. My advice to him was to be very careful of how he conducted himself. Tailgates, Facebook, etc. There is no dearth of smart kids that look like him trying to get into law school. Likewise, the NFL is very competitive. Rambo didn’t help himself. And this makes twice now? There is a time and place for everything. For
Rambo, now ain’t the time to be frivolous about his future. Remind me why he came back for his senior year. Not only that but he has been rather careless and selfish with his teammate’s futures as well. But I do understand the “get over yourself” meme. The claim of “youthful indiscretion” has never been more in vogue than it is now.

You are 100% correct about the claim of “youthful indiscretion” being in vogue. That’s because more people are putting up with the shit now than they used to, and that is sad.

On the other hand, as you might have figured out by now, I don’t get the “get over yourself” meme. And, in this specific case, I won’t be getting over myself any time soon.

Having said that, let me clarify my comments. If I’m gonna get flamed, I’d at least like the flaming to be on point – which is almost never the case on blogs. I don’t think smoking weed is an especially egregious thing IN GENERAL. But if that is what happened in this case, it was an incredibly stupid move. Whether UGA football players like it or not, they are held to a different standard than the rest of the students on campus. They accept that reality when they accept all of the other (mostly positive) side effects of being a UGA football player. They know the rules. They are constantly reminded of the rules. They willingly chose to break the rules. And the consequences of their actions are certainly not limited to them. So, no, I won’t be getting over myself on this issue – once again, IF that is what they did.

            Well put.

Still, it’s about time we started doing some serious, public lobbying for having consistent or standardized policies for such indiscretions across the conference as sUGArdaddy points out above. While I don’t think our standards are too high a bar, we repeatedly put ourselves at a competitive disadvantage when we face programs that don’t have such policies (not to mention when certain programs actively cover-up, lie, cheat, etc.)

If you make this debate public, at the very least you make the other schools, presidents look weaselly as they defend their relatively lax standards. The more public the issue, the better Georgia looks as a comparison, which is our only real advantage in having stricter policies . As it is now, we actually look worse because player suspensions make lasting, negative news, while non-suspensions do not.

I hear you. Believe me, I do. I would love to see the SEC pass a tougher uniform code of conduct, but I’m not holding my breath.

We’ll start getting over ourselves when they stop asking us for money to run the program. At some point you have to grow up and take responsibility. Both of these a$$holes are in line to make MILLIONS of dollars and they can’t put their pipes down for a phucking year? I was a phuck up in school for a year or two, but I made the transition to something a little more. Rambo is too old and too far along to cop the “I’m only 20” plea.
Best part about this is that I get my Saturday’s back this fall.

  21. I really thought that with all the guys that decided against going pro this year that they had a better mentality than we had as a team in a long time. The bone headed off field issues by upper classmen is showing that is not the case at this point. *sigh*

I know this isn’t Richt’s fault but I really wish he and McGarity would look into revamping our discipline policies into whatever helped our program win the most games long term. I think it puts us at a net disadvantage to have one of the more stringent policies in the SEC meanwhile Stephen Garcia never missed a game until Connor Shaw took his job. I don’t care about some fictitous moral high ground I care about wins and losses and doing whatever it takes within legal and ethical means necesary to win.

I disagree; I want the University of Georgia to be held to the highest of standards. I take great pride that I am DAWG fan and that I pull for the University of Georgia, and I would like to see these brain dead morons get kicked off the team after they are giving one opportunity. It is an honor that these athletes are given an opportunity to get a scholarship to play football at UGA, and there are many that would love to get the opportunity to put on the uniform and step out on that field every Saturday and play. I was one of those kids, that dreamed of put that red helmet on and playing. I hope that my son applies himself and wants to go out there play. There are several kids every year that sheds many tears because they are not able to make the team. If these over privilege 5 star athletes do not get it, give it to these kids that want to come to Georgia. Dooley and Russel took these kids and made it happen.

Which college football fan would live the life of a scholorship athlete, if living that discplined life was a requirement to be a fan?

I agree with what most people said about pot. Pretty small potato.

Well…if the rewards and career path possibilities were the same for fandom as they are for Ogletree and Rambo, I think there might be quite a few volunteers for the “disciplined life” duty. But they aren’t.

As for the size of the potato, it turned out to be a pretty big one for those two, no? Please understand that I’m not in the business of demonizing pot. If some loser wants to smoke it in his basement, that’s fine with me. He probably isn’t hurting anyone other than himself. But UGA football players doing it is an entirely different story. The penalties are steep, and the consequences affect many, many more people than just those two.
