I don’t think I want to live in a world where Roger Ailes takes on ESPN by finding his own version of the insufferable Keith Olbermann.

    Gratuitous shots at Ailes aside…

    I don’t know what to think about this. On one hand, I think most anything that reduces ESPN’s death grip on sports (particularly college football) is a good thing, but Foxsports college football broadcasts are pretty bad. I would hope the quality of those broadcasts would improve greatly if they ever started making serious headway toward obtaining those rights. And, on a related note, monkeys may also fly out of my butt.

      I agree about the quality FoxSports has lacked with CFB (not so much with the NFL). At the same time more effort from them, and the new NBC venture into sports, can only help loosen the death grip ESPN has on sports programming. ESPN was really great to have in their early years but they have grown to be a monster. Competition may be shoddy in the beginning but taking a long range view this can only help. If ESPN isn’t knocked back by someone, they will only get more obnoxious and controlling.

        You realize it’ll cost us more for that, right? What will happen with more competition is the costs for broadcast rights will be bid up even further… and that will get passed along in our cable/satellite TV bills.

          I would think the bidup would be with increased costs to sponsors and, with the changing college environment and must see college football of the near future, lower the price to the consumer in a more competitive market. The price wouldn’t get jacked up until later.

          One can pay to just put out an opinion on a blogging paysite, but many of us just aren’t induced into a coma concerning thought processes like ESPN tries to dictate and we come on this site to express ourselves freely …well….because it’s free. So many will gravitate toward a new competing sports news and opinion agency…until they begin to charge. (Like many who don’t depend on Rivals or Scout anymore) You can get all their info and without their warpage, but you have to work longer and harder. That’s why we come on here : – because you work thru the stuff others charge us to hear or read their opinion . Certainly the same economics will apply to newer competing sports news agencies. Broadband has also changed the broadcast cost landscape.

          Yes, but I find few thinks as valuable as what electronics cost us. Whether it be computers, TVs, or audio equipment, the cost seems a bargain to me. We are very fortunate to have lived in the times we have seen the past 50-60 years, The ROI is very acceptable to me, even if you increased it by over 50%. When you add in the possibility of taking the WWL down a few notches, I am “all-in”.

    olberman on any channel makes the decision easy for me. Thankfully remotes now make it is a simple process to erase the human waste from my screen. It was even easier to wipe out maher by simply discontinuing HBO. But it is Masters week, why dwell on the negative side of life?

    I love the thought of ESPN having some competition. Olbermann is an Ass-Hat of the worst kind. No matter what he (or Maher for that matter) does he comes off as an extremely unhappy and petty person.

    At least Olbermann can be funny. More than I can say for the hacks that spew forth nightly on Fox News.

    Politics aside, one of the small joys of sports radio, for me, is when Olbermann comes on the Dan Patrick show and they talk baseball.

    They’ve always been gold together.

      +1 The old Sports Centers were live entertainment, that just happened to have a sports theme. The boys are back together again tonight in New York I think in a show put together by the guy that wrote the ESPN book.

    The ability to seize attention on TV or media apparently comes in inverse proportion to your basic humanity. Olbermann, Limbaugh, O’Reilly, Berman – by all accounts, insufferable p*i*ks when the camera’s not running and the mic’s aren’t live.
