Thursday morning buffet

As the working week heads towards another close, here are some things to digest:

  • Michael Elkon hits on where I stand with Tony Barnhart’s pronouncements, namely that’s it’s hard to tell where the reporter ends and the player starts.
  • Boy, did Cal whiff badly on its athletic endowment plans.
  • Here’s some more shit Nick Saban doesn’t have time for.
  • Shakin the Southland expands on its recruiting cycles comparison.  Georgia comes out about as you’d expect – good on quality and a little short on quantity.
  • And here’s a look at how the recruiting services do in terms of success and bias.
  • Spurrier and Tuberville, together.  (I wonder if Tubs responded to Spurrier’s question with the advice he once gave Richt about running the ball in the SEC.  Probably not.)
  • If you’re looking for the odds on making the SECCG, here you go.

I don’t usually bet with Vegas Sportsbooks but if I don’t find a local bookie that will give me UGA at 5-1, I will have to make that play at 5Dimes. There are many things that could go wrong and derail our trip to Atlanta, but the odds aren’t anywhere close to being that long. Book it, Dano!

Remember though, those numbers are for winning the SEC title, not the East.

yes retwely, i believe you’re correct, the article is somewhat vague but I believe the Senator has it misworded above

Just for lulz, set your SEC East champ odds.

          Mine:
          Georgia 8/5
          South Carolina 2/1
          Florida 3/1
          Tennessee 10/1
          Mizzou 10/1
          Vandy 25/1
          Kentucky 30/1

You right sir, I thought it was for winning the East. And you are right, you could play UGA, SC, and UF and be guaranteed a return if any one of them won. My bad. Still, 5-1 on UGA for the SEC title looks to be a decent bet, but not the same size I would make on it being for the East. Thanks for the correction.

UGA and Arkansas having the same odds of making it to Atlanta? They clearly know something I don’t. Even before Petrino was fired that seems like a stretch. If Arkansas was in the East, then yeah, but they’re not; they’re competing with LSU and Bama.

Those odds are for winning the SEC title, not getting to Atlanta. If they were for simply winning the division, someone could place $100 each on Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, Mizzou, and Tennessee and be guaranteed no worse than breaking even as long as Kentucky and Vandy didn’t win the East. If only gambling were that easy…

    Oh, Bleacher Report.

“UF will get LSU, South Carolina and Georgia in The Swamp.”

    Excuse me?

I didn’t realize we were playing UF in Gainesville this year.

    • Mayor of Dawgtown

Playing them in Jacksonville is basically the same thing.

      • Macallanlover

Gag, cough, cough. You may have potential to be Mayor in Columbia, they love to whine over there.

        • Mayor of Dawgtown

In my case that’s wine Mac, not whine.

          • Macallanlover

Maybe at cocktail hour Mayor, but pretty much 24/7 when it comes to The Cocktail Party. Georgia fans sound pretty whiney on this subject, just like Florida fans did pre-Spurrier. Another couple of wins there and everyone will (again) realize it is a fair arrangement played on a field 120 yards long, with equal fan opportunities. The performance on the field determines who wins, not the location.

In the link on the Saban thing, all three suspended players sound like scrubs, so they’ll get the treatment and free up 3 scholarships.

There’s also mention of a scrub tight end named Lewis who “gave up his final year of eligibility.” Does he keep his scholarship and count against the limit? Can’t they shift him to an academic scholarship and free up another one?

I’ve always thought of Barnhart as Captain Obvious.

It seems that a Tech linebacker copped a BWI last July and he has been convicted and sentenced. The operative word here is July. Why was this not front page news at the AJC? Why was the kid allowed to play in six games last year? Did he not tell his coach last year or was everything swept under the rug? I have not mentioned the kid’s name and I hope the best for him, I don’t attack kids that strap it on. I am wondering what’s up with the hush hush in the Tech Ad’s office.

If you analyze the recruiting data it shows that (except for Bama) UGA has been getting the best players, just not enough of them. Basically half the posters on this blog have been saying that for about 3 years now. Maybe somebody ought to show those numbers to CMR–wait…has he already figured this out and changed his approach himself? Only time will tell.

14-1 on NC is a better bet than 5-1 for winning the SEC. If they win the SEC, the odds get reversed while the payout isn’t the smarter bet.
