John Theus’ importance, and why I’m nervous

It’s not that I disagree with Seth Emerson placing John Theus on his most important list.

It’s that I’m worried he’s underrated Theus’ importance at No. 8.

Given that the O line concerns most of us, I’d be hard pressed to think of #s 7, 6, and 5. Hope he brings it in every way. Considering his need by the team, why didn’t he come earlier to the team?

The Bollies high school does not allow early graduation. He had the grades to however. Very smart kid.

Thanks. Looks like we just had Cardiello (C) to commit. Maybe the O line show is getting back on the road with the #3 C in the country (Scout).

Seth never calls Aaron Murray on the carpet as a concern. Truth is, in 2010, Murray had the most experienced o-line in all of NCAA, and went 6-7. In 2011, with 3 future NFL draft picks, and the largest o-line in NCAA or NFL, Murray couldn’t beat a single ranked team. ESPN’s been pointing out Murray’s issues for a while now, especially Edward, don’t know why Emerson is such a Murray homer. But no, the o-line is secondary to my concerns about Aaron Murray (14 interceptions, 6 pick 6’s, av of 29 sacks epr season with 2 great o-lines, 0-9 vs. ranked teams as a leader).

I don’t understand this “Murray has never beaten a ranked team” meme that some of our fans have jumped on.

2011 Auburn was ranked #20 and we crushed them 45-7. Murray was 14-18 for 224 yards and 4 TDs. He barely had to throw in the 2nd half because he had shredded them so badly in the first half.

2011 GT was ranked #23 and we whipped them 31-17. Murray was 19-29 for 252 with 4 TDs and 1 INT.

He has definitely had his bad games and made mistakes that have cost us wins, but I’m tired of hearing that he hasn’t beaten a ranked team. He clearly has and will do so next season as well.

        Let’s be more specific:

Murray is 0-9 vs. ranked teams that finished in the top 25 AP poll.

I’d say the defense won both games you referenced. Held Auburn to 7 points. Any UGA QB could have won that kind of game. Same with GTech, Grantham held them to 17 points, not hard to score 20 for any UGA QB. Murray struggles when the defense doesn’t bail him, anytime defense gave up 30 or more points, Murray lost.

Not to mention 59% accuracy, int’s, sacks, etc.

“when the defense gave up more than 30 Murray lost.”. Are you serious? Name me a QB with a good record when his defense gives up 30.

Defense alone did not win the Auburn game. Murray was hot that day, there were some beautiful passes and great receptions. Moreover the O opened up huge holes for a fine running game. The defense did great and I loved Rambo’s pick 6. Also special teams looked great with Harrow’s amazing hit. The 2011 Auburn game was one of the most complete UGA games I have ever seen.

If the o-line was a concern in 2011, why did 3 guys get drafted in the NFL? O-line wasn’t the problem. Murray’s poise in big games has been since 2010, and still is the #1 concern.

You haven’t been watching the same games that some of us have. The problem was that the O line was rated high in 2010, but if you watch the play, you can see that Murray wasn’t protected that much. He made up for some of that lost protection by running the ball well. Even the RBs didn’t block. Last year we had the heaviest O line in D-1 ball, but jumping offside between being unable to keep D linemen out of Murray’s face always seemed to level the playing field.

Why would Seth want to criticize the guy who kept results from being even worse than they were. Murray has earned his playing prowess accolades while in a tough position. And he has stood most stalwart than any player on the team. He could probably kick your ass into next week.

Did actually watch our O-Line perform last year? They had talent but didn’t play well together. BSU, LSU, and MSU all ate our lines lunch.

Hey SlamDunker, take your negative tripe elsewhere. Its funny how you hold Murray responsible individually for an entire team. We win as a team and lose as a team. Murray is our starting quarterback and all your whining will not change it.

Murray is the #1 concern, was in 2010, 2011, and will be in 2012. No. 2 concern isn’t even close. I think Murray coughed the ball up an average of 2 turnovers per game against the 4 best teams last year. And threw a pick 6 in 3 out the 4 losses. NFL guys evaluated the o-line that gave up 33 sacks, and drafted 3 of them, so they decided the sacks and int’s were Murray’s issue, hanging onto the ball too long or misreads instead of o-line blame. I agree with the NFL scouts.

I say keep beating that drum SlamDunker. You have provided ample stats to backup your viewpoint. While I do not have Murray as my #1 concern, (mine is actually Mark Richt) I applaud you for sticking to our guns. Anytime your opinion differs from that of the mainstream people on this site take it as a personal assault. Too many Dawg fans are unable to see the forest for the trees.

Hey, Septic Hawg, it is not that your opinions differ, it is that they are ludacris. Don’t pretend to be a UGA fan….you are not. You realize you can be hung, shot, flailed and impaled for such an offense, right?

Well, it’s true…or at least as true as the BS you post here.

“Too many Dawg fans are unable to see the forest for the trees.” I’m not sure you picked the right idiom to express your discomfort with the state of the football team. Richtophobe vs. Richtophile? (H/T to S&G for the nomenclature). None the less get a grip. This site is…. this site. This is a GEORGIA BULLDOG site. Can I be more clear. Let me. The Senator will pretty much give you free reign …. just don’t be an ass. Conjones will jump on your butt and call you out every time. Hell he jumps me and I’m a homer. If you want to be S&G step your game up and compete. RIght now you just don’t have the stones.
          We good?

My problem is simple: the head coach is not getting the most out of our program. The numbers from 06-11 show that. Pretty sure I have been beating that drum for a while now. It may grow old to some, but nothing has changed. I was briefly blinded by the Auburn win (not as solid a W in hindsight as it originally appeared), but I have not changed my tune. As for having the stones, I am one of a very small few on this site that actually call it as I see it. Most people on this site muddle along with the rest of the sheep. If you can not see where this program is, you are simply not looking.

They didn’t draft the ones who let the D run to Murray unimpeded nor the RBs that couldn’t pass block. Let’s add up all the times he dodged guys in the backfield in order to complete a play, the hits he took without losing the ball, etc. You can’t paint a Georgia player only one way on here and get away with it. Why don’t you look for and recount all the game-saving plays he has made before extolling a littany of his bad plays only. He has played in a lot of fierce SEC games that many QBs couldn’t survive in. I guess his most TDs don’t count for anything in your blind world where you attempt to throw salt into our eyes and view the way you do. No thanks!

Why don’t you list “all the game saving plays” Murray has made against good teams.
I get tired of hearing about he and Christian Robinson talking about being leaders. Leaders don’t do that, they ball. Their actions speak for themselves. If you have to talk about how to be a leader, then your not a leader.
Murray has zero poker face. Watch the replays and pay attention to his eyes. He will let you know if he has what he wants or not before the snap. If not, he will get happy feet and panick, along with starring down the receiver.
I don’t think he is a pro QB, and yes scouts can be wrong….look at the redskins.
I truly believe Mett would have been the guy that eventually started at Georgia. What was Richt or anyone else going to say other than Murray was the man? Anything else would have caused more problems with the team, fans, and Murray.
I love the dawgs, but I have come to the conclusion the MNC won’t be won anytime soon. Murray doesn’t respond to mental pressure well and Richt makes horrible big game decisions. Those two things are the reason that we won’t see a crystal football in Athens.

So I guess the RB’s running into a brick wall for 4 qtrs in those games was the RB’s fault? I would guess that 90% of the posters here saw what I did in the BSU, LSU, and MSU games. Our line couldn’t make anything happen in the running game. That allowed the defense to get after Murray without having to respect the run. I agree that Murray has his issues, but I put about half of that on the o-line.

Yeah, and oh BTW, SlopFrikker, Murray is rated as the best QB in the SEC by most of the SEC coaches. I am sure you are much smarter than them but I will go with the coaches.

The biggest thing may just be the lack of depth at most positions…WR is strong, but RB was weak…heck, Marlon Brown can hardly get on the field and he came in with high marks (should have RS his freshman year)…what if, #3, or King were still here to share the load w/ #1 last year, maybe the OL would have worked harder knowing that the starting RB wouldn’t be taking himself out to take a breather because he came into the season out of shape (maybe he believed that dog and pony show where the RB position was left vacant and all he had to do was show up on game day)…the big boys were standing around with their hands on their hips wayyyy to early in some games…when the starters did go down, the backups stepped in and played pretty well(probably because they were hungry to be out there)…look at the DB’s being suspended; the best deep threat had to be moved back to defense (ahhh, all world dream team Nick Marshall and Chris Sanders, sure could use them for the few first games)…so, I guess it could be Murray’s fault, but this team has been a state of flux for quite a few years now….maybe this will be the year
