Merritt Hall, come on down.

Meet Georgia’s new first-string fullback.

Georgia put out a preseason depth chart today during its appearance at the Pigskin Preview gathering of state college football programs.

The biggest surprise is walk-on Merritt Hall listed as the first-team fullback. The 5-foot-11, 216-pound redshirt freshman from the Wesleyan School is listed ahead of Richard Samuel and Zander Ogletree.

“Merritt had a great spring,” coach Mark Richt said. “He learned what to do and he was striking people with a lot of enthusiasm. He would have earned the right to be the starter at the end of spring so we put it on the board that way.

Richt called fullback “a very high-contact position. Guys got to be very tough to do that. Richard Samuel certainly has gotten some reps at fullback and a guy that could do. Of course we’ve got Zander who has been playing the fullback position.”

It’s not like Richt hasn’t gone that way before.  And maybe it’ll hold up, although 216 pounds seems a little light at the position.  But I sure am curious to see what Quayvon Hicks brings to the mix in a few months.

The more interesting part of that article is that Kolton Houston STILL has not been cleared to play this upcoming season. I have no idea what happened there, but with only 81 days to go till kickoff I want the NCAA to at least decide if he can or cannot play.

Not to be all doom and gloom, but could there be ‘discipline’ reasons behind the ranking?

Time to reward another walk-on with a full ride.

I’m hoping that Chase Vasser being a starting OLB is a just motivational ploy as well.

No way in hell Vasser starts.. well, maybe the first game, hell maybe every game.. but that is gonna last one series at most. Doesn’t have the talent to be on the field with the rest of those guys.

There is probably a better, kinder way to express that sentiment in a public forum. I hope he rocks someone’s teeth on every play he is given. Somehow CMR and CTG have a little more street cred than you do regarding playing time and talent evaluation.

  6. Conley behind both JSW and Wooten? Did I miss last season?

Puzzling. I’d trade ’em both to keep CC, based on last year.

Don’t forget that he missed all or most of spring practice due to an injury. I think they typically do this (put them at the bottom of the depth chart) when an injured player misses spring practice. Put it this way – I’m not at all concerned. Conley is a great kid who will be a big contributor for us this year.

I’m quite excited about watching Conley’s career in Athens. I think he’s gonna be a really good receiver for us. He runs good routes, has good hands, and is a receiver who goes and gets the ball. He really impressed me last season.

I’d like to see Blake Sailors get a few good reps as reward for all the good work he did as a gunner.

Looked Hall up and one cousin is a receiver for the Eagles and another cousin on Wake Forest’s W’s B-ball team. He may just be a great athlete. Always room somewhere for a guy like that. I will be excited to see Hicks in action sooner rather than later though.

Merritt Hall, Kyle Karempolis and David Andrews all played together at Wesleyan. And for your fun fact of the day….Merritt Hall’s other cousin (UGA Chearleader) is dating Matthew Stafford. has been for a couple of years.
