This job sure can age a man.

I know he’s been around for a while now, but this picture from yesterday of Mark Richt is the first one I’ve noticed that’s made me see the years on him:

It’s not only the touch of gray at the temples, or the wrinkles on the forehead – there’s something in his eyes and the set of his mouth that suggests he’s feeling it a little more these days.

I just hope it’s more a sign of wisdom than frustration.

I’m gonna politely disagree with you, Senator. I see a man who’s optimistic, who’s been out in the sun too much, and who’s lost about 10 lbs or so since last year. I read somewhere he started working out with the strength staff last season…

Well Senator, I’m feeling it too. 😉

Hosea Ballou: “Forty is the old age of youth, fifty is the youth of old age.”

  3. I’m thinking of the joke about the old law lady smelling the eviscerated carcass of a chicken at a butcher shop and asking the butcher ,”is your chicken fresh” as she sticks her nose between the spread chicken legs and takes a deep breath. After 11 birds(or in this case years) the butcher asks her,”Lady could you pass that test? The point being.Senator ,could any of us pass that test? I don’t want to be compared to pictures of myself from 2001 ,

    • Great jdrip! I love it “Lady could you pass that test?”. Don’t worry about CMR though; he won’t burn that candle down too low before he hits the road.

  4. The other other Doug

Growing older and looking older sure is better than taking a dirt nap!

wish i could say i saw some killer instinct there but…

CMR isn’t going to mesmerize the audience with gung-ho speeches, but he’s far better than sos and Franklin – who generally make asses of themselves when a mic is in front of them.

Considering what he does, I think he looks remarkably youthful. Dooley looked worse by this point in his career (possibly because of the toupe he was wearing) so I will also respectfully disagree.

Don’t forget that his daughter, Anya, just went through a 14-hour surgery earlier this week. Apparently it went a lot longer than expected. I have no word on how she’s doing, but my guess is that he’s pretty tired from the whole ordeal. And I believe the surgery was out of state, so there was travel involved as well.

    • No doubt that’s part of it (surgery was in Dallas, I believe).

      • Go Dawgs!

That’s certainly a factor. I also have noticed that he’s got this look about him when he’s doing the bigger media stuff, particularly when the Jeff Schultzes of the world are on the war path about stuff like dismissals. When you see pictures of him on the practice field, in Butts-Mehre, or on the sidelines (or with his family!) he looks just as youthful and vital as he ever did. I think that the media part of the job and the disciplinary part of the job may be weighing on him. I hope we win a lot of games this year to make it worth it for him.

  8. It definitely has been a long time since 2002…

It’s also been a rough week for Richt…his daughter was in surgery for over 12 hours earlier in the week, and he had just flown in from being with the family in Texas. I can imagine that strain would show a little.

Spoiler alert – I’m goin’ Disney on ya..
After watching him at the media days, my man crush was re-newed. I love the way he speaks and carries himself and I’m sooo happy he represents & leads UGA. Man I hope he wins this year- he deserves it! Go Dawgs!

    • Skeptic Dawg

Spoiler alert…I am goin’, well, Skeptic Dawg on ya…
After watching him at the SEC Media day, I further believe he would make one hellva AD somewhere. I read not long ago (pretty sure it was at Bernie’s place)…When I walk into church on Sunday morning do I care how much football my preacher knows? And why does Richt deserve to win this year? Is he putting in more work than other coaches? Is he developing a never seen before offensive system? Or do you belive he deserves to win because he is a swell guy and has been at UGA for a while (read too long) now.

      • Nate Dawg

        Heres 3 reasons:
        He’s a great guy & good coach.
I’m a true Dawg fan unlike some others on here (read – you, Skep).
        Your a tiresome arsehole.
Wait, maybe thats just 2..there, tear that down..

There is a long list of programs that are not run as consistently well as ours. The list of programs that are arguably run better than ours is much, much shorter.

Does anybody want to trade places with Penn State right now? Reggie Bush, Tat-gate, Scam Newton, Butch Davis, Bobby Petrino, etc… There is a lot going on out there that we have stayed above.

        • King Jericho

Jersey-gate, Scooter-gate, Middle name-gate. We’re right in the thick of it with those other scandals!

        • Dawgfan Will

As far as Reggie Bush, Tat-gate, and Scam Newton go, I’d say yes, there are a lot of Dawg fans that would be willing to get a little dirty to win the SEC again or a NC.

Just to be clear, though, I’m not one of those fans. I can remember the dark days Richt brought us out of, and I will continue to support him

I could imagine some of the tiredness comes from walking and recruiting on broken legs, compliments of our AD, Pres and selected Bd of Regents members. They bury him among the not-so-good coaches by salary and let everyone know that he is free to walk away anytime. It has already hurt our recruiting this year by creating the question as to if he will be here when they (recruits) graduate. Other good Ga players have committed ahead of time to neighboring schools as soon as that coach-crippling minority was evidently appeased. Our top recruit decommitted and now has one of our rivals at the top of his list.

The aholes won’t get blamed and Schultz just found more fodder for his cannons. And Richt has to live with the embarrassment of players losing respect for him after our school has advertised it’s arrogant loss of respect. In my book, he is owed a large and humbling apology

About time you put the pipe down and came to work! I’m a homer as much as you… but c’mon on! You really didn’t expect a Hamilton/Fulmer-like contract at this point did you? McGarity is brand new and he would like to grow into this position. CMR can help that growth. How? Just win baby! Just win and everything else goes away.

Richt’s lost control of his agin’ genes, PAAAWWWLLLLL!

Time makes you bolder and even children get older and I’m gettin’ older too. I am going to put Stevie’s box set in the machine and raise a cup, or a can, to auld lang syne. I will be watching ya’ll and the first one to make fun of Stevie get’s his butt whipped by and old man! I have only had a crush on her for 40 years.
