Here’s an officiating experiment I can support:
The Big Ten is strongly considering experimenting with goal-line cameras at some football stadiums this season so instant replay officials can better review critical goal-line plays.
Big Ten coordinator of officials Bill Carollo said the conference is in discussions with its members and there’s a “very strong possibility” there will be a trial run this season…
Go for it, man. A cost of $1 million+ isn’t that much, considering what the sport is bringing in and how crucial a call can be there.
It sounds like Steve Shaw is keeping an eye on it, which is also good.
SEC coordinator of officials Steve Shaw said the Big Ten’s testing of goal-line cameras would add great value.
“It’s something that, if it’s successful, we need to take a look at in college football,” Shaw said. “We had some early conversations (within the SEC). You can’t put a pole up in our stadiums. Our stadiums are almost sacred ground so you’d have to find a spot, whether it’s an overhang or a deck, where you could mount a camera that would be unobtrusive and have a good view.”

Shaw is an exception to the horrible level of officiating we have seen in the SEC over the past 15 years or so. Nothing wrong with praising the SEC office when they finally do something positive. As JN said above, it is hard to understand why this has taken so long. Shame that the Big 10 had to take the lead, another reason to sent Slime packing, the guy is just second rate.

How many times have we seen blown calls on ball placement shown clearly on video in games involving SEC teams and the calls not get reversed? It won’t matter if they have a camera on the goal line.

“Indisputable” becomes impossible when the replay angle isn’t straight down the goal line or sideline. How many times have we seen video guys trying to figure out what happened at the goal line from an ESPN camera set on the 50? Ridiculous.
Even the NFL doesn’t have dedicated equipment for goal line reviews or sideline plays. I’ve never understood why not. Is it really just dollars?

It can’t be just dollars, especially for the NFL with so few games each week. I can see why implementing this for every college game could be a financial issue but for the big programs/stadiums, it would be worth it for the schools to provide the cameras if the networks balk. I have also wondered why this wasn’t done earlier, so many games have plays where this is almost a necessity if you want to get scoring plays right. We didn’t really need one at Oklahoma State to get that ridiculous first down called correctly, but it would have documented whether the refs missed that by 1 1/2 yards, or two full yards.

Yes, but even if you have a goal line angle you have to actually look at it. Honey Badger flipping the ball to the ref at the 1 yd line in the SECCG comes to mind.
