Every fan base has ’em.

Morons, that is.  Georgia is hardly immune.

A person claiming to be a UGA fan recently called one of the team’s top football recruits to clarify the status of his commitment to the Bulldogs.

The ill-advised contact between the “fan” and the prospect and the story behind it instantly went viral on Twitter, and ignited heated discussions on a UGA team website and Rivals.com’s national message boards.  It also created some speculation that UGA may have to report an NCAA secondary violation — even though UGA appeared to have nothing to do with the phone call, and the unidentified person claiming to be a UGA fan may be a fan of another school.

Sadly, the school is having to waste resources verifying that no secondary violation occurred.

And this is why I don’t get in the recruiting weeds here:

“Here’s all I know,” said Steve Patterson, publisher of UGASports.com. “One of my guys contacted me and said there was somebody on DawgVent saying they had been calling prospects of UGA. As we all know, that’s against NCAA bylaws, which are very encompassing when it comes to things stuff like that …

“The site staff removed the post. Then after that, the guy went on and on about how could do that if he wanted, and [to heck with] the NCAA. Then the guy sent some harassing emails to our staff. They contacted me and asked what to do, and I said blacklist him and have him contact me. That’s the last we all heard of it until he made some other posts around the Internet.

“He threatened to say he was going to call prospects, and then call Coach Richt and say we instructed him to do this, which is absurd…”

Sounds like somebody needs to find another hobby.  Or get laid.

I can see the NCAA ruling the kid ineligible and UGA losing 2 schollies a year for 5 years because the nimrod bought season tickets 8 years ago and therefore is obviously a booster.

I’m going to have to eat a second pack of pop tarts. I love me some bulldog berries!

The Dawg Vent is the feverswamp of UGA. That is one corner of the Internet that embarrasses me as a fan. I bet a majority of those users are still on dial-up and Internet Explorer.

I disagree. Any UGA news hits there before anywhere else. A lot of the talk is just hearsay, but I enjoy following recruiting (not as much as BonefideDawg) and good recruiting info hits the boards daily. For every embarrassing or overzealous fan, there are a dozen good Georgia fans.

You are correct, I broke away 5-6 years ago and have never looked back. Can’t blame Steve for the fools that have squatted there, but I do think he should have implemented some selective control before it became a cesspool. I agree with Ben, it became embarrassing to say you even read that site, much less posted regularly. As the Senator said, we all have them but it doesn’t mean we have to encourage them.

When UGA fans behave badly around Athens to rival fans, and anyone else, it is all our responsibility to make sure they know it isn’t acceptable to act like that. I will never forget my experience in Boulder after the Colorado game, the immature of students/punks after the game overcame the all the many positive things we had enjoyed the days before from their adult supporters. It may be a minority, and a small minority at that, but I would advise any rival fan to pass on the Boulder trip. We have to know how that looks to visitors to Sanford and help police them, there are always enough good fans around to act together.

That’s about when I had had it w/ them, too. I was in a faraway land before the UGA blogosphere blew up, and I thought that was the only place I could go to get a UGA fix. There was such a low level of discourse, and there was open contempt (even for fellow fans) if you weren’t one of the regulars around there.

Nevermind the single line conversations filled with IMHO FWIW NM*** bits that passed for conversation, there was never any change for legitimate discussion about anything.

      • define “good recruiting info” because most of that crap is just crap. Besides, while I enjoy recruiting stuff, obsessing over 16 yr old boys who for the most part will never pan out as starting SEC football players, is not healthy.

They’ve traced the call. The number is a Columbia, SC, number. Apparently from the middle of their football offices. And the “booster” made sure to say he was “definitely a Georgia fan” and “not a preacher’s kid from Tennessee, no sir,” and was also “not making the turn at Augusta right now.”

This will not stand. I’m fining UGA $5 million and implementing a 2-year bowl ban. No need for any investigation.

I’m sure the NCAA will be contacting UGA about this. I think the Vent is one of their preferred sources.

I’m on my way to the Florida, AU, and Tenn boards to start this same crap so they can waste some time and money as well. I’d go to Stingtalk but we all know they’re recruiting is in the tank anyways.

Everyone always gets hissy-fit about the NCAA violations here, but to my knowledge the NCAA has never so much as talked condescendingly, let alone punish, any school that’s ever been involved in this type of “violation.” The recent Ohio State sex offender/twitter example is the most glaring case I can remember, and by and large the school was commended for how they handled that, not punished for any kind of violation.
