The “suspended for Missouri” meme

I’m not picking on Andy Staples for writing this

Which of the SEC’s new members will find success sooner?  In the short run, the answer is Missouri, but in the long run, it may be Texas A&M. This season, Missouri will get Georgia at home in a suspension-weakened state on Sept. 8. Should Missouri win that game, the SEC East race will get much more interesting.

… because (1) he’s not actually predicting a Georgia loss and (2) he’s far from being the only pundit raising that issue.

But I am wondering how much credit Georgia is going to get if it wins in Missouri and whether the punditocracy will then start talking about how formidable the Dawgs look when they get the suspended players back.

Nah… who am I kidding?  About that time, Spurrier’s schedule bitching will be revving into high gear.  Ooh, look, shiny toy!

This Missouri bullsh*t is getting old. Could we lose to them?, yes. Will we?, no.

Remember we are the only preseason #1 in my memory who won their games and dropped in the polls after every win. We are the Rodney Dangerfield of College football.

Yep, top ten in wins, top 5 bowl win %, best record of any team against winning program foes in history, but NO respect!

Shezactly. Three weeks In a row. Win each game handily and lose ground in the polls. Saw weeks two and three unfold right after polls after week one. Dooley must have sold his soul to the devil in 1980 or January 1981.

      • Actually, there was a cadre of assholes, even then, who constantly suggested and put forth the meme that Georgia didn’t deserve it….that Georgia was lucky in the win over N.D. in New Orleans. I always thought N.D. was lucky because Lindsey Scott dropped a perfectly thrown pass on a long one down the left sidline…that, with UGA’s defense, would have made it very hard for ND to stay in the game. The assholes are always with us, living in the fear that UGA will someday rise to the dominant position that the Flagship U. of a State so laden in football talent can obtain. This is an especially horrifiying nightmare of SOS. We’re getting there, so the anti-uga hype will get louder and cresendo if we actually get on the cusp. Georgia needs to start by hobnailing Missouri’s face and humiliating the hell out of USC.
Has it ever occured to anyone else.?..Steve Spurrier would make a hell of a Yellow Jacket. He’s just like them with the exception that …like it or not…he’s a winner on the gridiron. But his demeanor is SO North Ave.
He’d look very natural in a rat hat.

What? The media might go from a boilerplate meme (UGA weakened by suspensions) to the logical next step after a win over MO (UGA weathered storm and is even more formidable now). Yeah. That’s a real knee-slapper, Senator.

Haven’t we had suspensions at the beginning of the season pretty much every year that Richt has been here? How many times have those suspensions really been a factor in the outcome of early games? Once, maybe twice?

If Georgia beats Mizzou, the media will effortlessly transfer over to the “Missouri just isn’t ready for the SEC” meme.

Mark Schalbach released his “Hot and Not” list. Guess what made the cut for “not hot”? If you guessed “Georgia’s schedule” go ahead and give yourself a pat on the back. Sigh. This is getting really old.

      That should be “Schlabach”.

I saw that, and was confused how a schedule could be “hot” or “cold” for that matter. The adjective doesn’t seem to work in that context.

What sports writer is going to let grammar get in the way of a good UGA-bashing meme?

This is an entity that once tried to determine who was more “now”. I don’t think they worry about what words mean in context.

He was on Finebaum’s show this afternoon and he said something to the effect that “Georgia’s schedule was the easiest in the history of football”. Interestingly enough, that comment was on the heels of him discussing FSU’s schedule which he didn’t denigrated. Are we the Rodney Dangerfield of College Football?

The schedule will be the reason we don’t play for more than the SEC championship.

  7. Other than SEC teams, what team would you be less than willing to trade schedules with? The toughest schedule outside of the SEC is a cakewalk compared to the weakest schedule inside the SEC. Hyperbole? I don’t know, but it’s worth asking. I think the jerkoffs advancing this meme should be asked for specific, non-SEC teams with a tougher schedule.

I just love how the “suspended for Missouri” meme keeps getting repeated despite that none of the ones repeating it know if we’ll have more than two guys suspended for that game.

It could just as well be a one game suspension for Rambo, considering this is his first failed drug test. I dunno about Ogletree. I do know the new “leak any info about a player failing a drug test, and you will be fired” policy McGarity put in place means we won’t hear anything at any point.

    • at which point, Mark Richt becomes a hypocrite, “plays thugs that should be suspended”

You guys are missing the point. They are hammering the suspensions for all the obvious reasons PLUS…if Tree plays they get to add “Richt cares more about winning than doing the right thing” to the meme.

      Enjoy the layers.

  11. The rule to suspended players 10% of the season does not have to be done against SEC teams but only against Cup Cakes, you can include GT on the latter list though, LOL.

Should we consider “punditocracy” for the lexicon?

  13. The 2 or 3 game suspensions can be done during games against Buffalo, Florida Atlantic, and GA Southern. Richt should know better. It would not be against his church or religion. I do not think there anything in the UGA rule book that mandates when to suspend athletes. Only NCAA does when their rules are violated. Probably those talking heads at ESPN will complain and criticize, but why should UGA care if even with just the schedule they are already in that mode.

Fantasy: CMR shows up in Columbia MO with full goatee, died jet black, and head shaved except for “G” logo (also died jet black). Starts all “might be suspended” players. Early on, Jenkins falls on Franklin, flattening him while ball pops in air into hands of J Jones, who trots it into end zone. Despite comfortable lead, Richt orders Aaron to air it out deep to King and Mitchell in 4th quarter. Entire team celebrates in end zone after 8th TD is scored. When Coach Pinkel complains, Bobo has to pull CMR off him. When reporter accuses CMR of dirty play, CTG has to pull CMR off the reporter. Old memes obliterated as “Evil Richt” is toast of CFB. Good times are had by all!

I prefer to to think about the reaction to TAMU (who’s apparently holding walk-on auditions for kicker and punter) upset Florida in their first home game.
(And UGA wins in week 2 as well, obviously.)
