Senior defensive end Cornelius Washington and some of his teammates are talking unabashedly about a national title.
“Like I told the guys, it just kind of seems like the stars are kind of aligning for us to be able to do a whole lot of great things this year,” Washington said. “We’ve got to put in the work and put in the effort, and I feel like we go out every day and do that.”
“Our goal is to get to Atlanta, to get to Miami and to win,” junior tight end Arthur Lynch said. “(Snapper) Ty Frix said it well the other night. Let’s forget Miami. If you win every single game and you’re in the SEC, you will be national champions.”
GATA, fellas. Let’s see what you’ve got.

That game was an indictment of our coordinators.
But I also don’t think that this team is anything like the 2008 team. The defense for the 2012 team could be one of the best we’ve ever had in Athens. The offense looks promising but doesn’t have the star power of the 2008 team. Hopefully the oline is better, though.

I want to believe that this team is different from 2008. I’m basing that conclusion on 1) Grantham > Willie 2)unlike their ’08 counterparts the media is more or less telling these guys they’re overrated and even if they are successful it’s because of an easy schedule.

The defense can talk big all they want. They need to figure out a way to bring the O and the special teams up to their level, though.

For all our excitement about our defense, it IS true that they have yet to finish a game against a good opponent. If (sorry .. when) that happens this year, it’ll be the first time in dozens of moons.

I’ve been critical of Washington since he came to Athens. And I believe it was justified. Great talent and ability, poor most everything else.
But I’ve sensed a change in Washington this year that is very surprising. He seems to have matured somewhat, and is putting the effort in, doing the things that are required for him to play to his potential. If that’s true, we’ll see a different, and much improved, CW this year. He may even go hard on every play.
Washington was also quoted today as saying “everything needs to improve”, nothing excepted, that we’re not where we wanna be on defense or anywhere else.
Sounds pretty balanced to me.

Good Gawd those comments are nerve wracking. Just take care of the Bulls…then the Tigers…then the Owls… I get the spirit of the sentiment, floating a long-range goal out there, but just go play by play, fellas.

I do not understand the excitement. Is it the lack of a proven RB? Or is it the inexperienced O-line? Maybe having 2 TE’s with zero experience is a good thing? What about losing your best WR to the defense? Oh, I know! Everyone is excited about an OC that can not find his way out of a wet paper sack at times. No, then it must be the HC that finds a way to completely underprepare a team for at least 1 game a season. Put your drink down and slowly walk away for the table.

Yes, Skeptic, yes it IS about all of those things and more. Most of us are excited that 2012 is about to begin. We’re excited because a group of Dawgs with what seems to be the correct sentiment will be showing us what they’ve got pretty soon. What’s the alternative? Maybe we should wring our hands and wish we didn’t have a football team because it might not be as good as we are wishing for. Maybe we should expect the newbie running backs to fumble on their first five carries of each game. Being a football fan is fun…if it made me miserable I wouldn’t watch or follow it. I’m not a coolaider, but good grief, I don’t eat worms either.

What was it Vince Dooley said at the beginning of every SEC season ? O yeah, just win the SEC ,the rest will take care of itself…circa the 60’through the 80’s. So the more things change the more they stay the same.
Did anyone besides me see the talking heads on ESPN (Herbstreet,Desmond Howard and the idiot) all predict a National Championship game without an SEC participant……what BS and this is the way they’re talking when UGA has it’s best chance in years. I’m not sure who I dislike more ESPN or the NCAA.

It’s pretty obvious ESPN has decided to do whatever it can to see that an SEC team doesn’t win it again. I mean, it couldn’t be MORE obvious. A child of 8 could see it.
The thing is, there’s a great deal ESPN can do. More than most think.

Can’t stand J Franklin (the coach not the QB) but I did like his approach when he got to Vandy in telling his players “I don’t need 12 great games from you. I don’t need 60 great minutes a game from you. I need 6 great seconds (the ave length of a play) from you. And then I need another and another and another 6 great seconds until there are no seconds left on the clock.” I like that kind of approach and hope it is the one the Dawgs take this year. The end result will take care if itself. Great effort and execution for the next 6 seconds, then the next 6 seconds and then the next until the game is over in Miami.
