“Only in America.”

I posted this clip last year on the season’s first day.  I haven’t seen anything in the interim that does a better job of expressing why we love college football so much, why we’re willing to tolerate the petty BS, the money-grubbing and the egoism that occupies our attention much of the time, so you get the pleasure of watching it again.

Call it a GTP tradition, if you like.  And enjoy tonight’s games.

I hope he didn’t have much trouble washing that stain off his hand.I’ve been a fan of his since the “Jeeves and Wooster” TV series.

Like a dear old trusted friend who only comes around for a few months of the year and then disappears again, it is finally back. After months of boredom and endless scandal talk, we finally get back to the positive, humorous, heartbreaking, and outrageously intense part of the game. There is just something different about football season. Outsiders will never understand.

I don’t think an outsider has ever explained our fascination with the idea of CFB as well as this. They didn’t show a single play from the game, but instead the band, the students, and all the pagentry that brings us back year after year. The only thing missing was showing a bunch of guys figuring out how to sneak in liquor.

There is simply nothing like a packed stadium in the 20 minutes before kickoff of a big time college football game in the South.

That’s pretty much true but I am guessing you never sat in an auditorium for the last hour before Elvis took the stage. The electricity just built minute by minute, and when the lights went out as he came out, it just exploded. Sorry, I am not meaning to take away from your intended point but as I read your reply it made me think about what might challenge that build-up. Doesn’t matter, yours is still alive and kicking. Not sure Sanford will have those intense moments this year with the home schedule we have been dealt but it will be true in some SEC stadiums in 2012. Our fans will be excited for sure, but probably not much nervous energy.

  8. Thanks so much for posting that clip, which put a morning smile on my face. Oh my, you have to love America, and you have to love college football. It sure is great to be alive and able to enjoy both.

“I really don’t know of anything that sums up America better. It’s simultaneously preposterous, incredibly laughable, impressive, charming, ridiculous, expensive, over-populated, wonderful, American.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

There are 3 things that make life worth living. One is college football. I’m not even sure what the other 2 are right now.

As you might imagine, I don’t have a lot of use for Auburn or Alabama. But I do recognize that their rivalry is right near the top of things which make our beloved sport great. God, I LOVE college football!
