I’ll say it again – his play against the option was textbook perfect. I can’t wait to see what he does against Georgia Tech. Assuming the genius runs a play towards his side of the field, of course.

Jarvis is the Dawg most likely to win the Heisman.
Beginning with the end of last year- when his leadership was evident as he beseeched his teamates to stay another year, to his performance so far this year…if he keeps up this pace and if the Dawgs win ten…he should be a finalist for the award. I hope Jarvis Jones and Aaron Murray are both sitting there in New York. I hope UGA is promoting JJ for the Heisman.

He could get into the final five for the trip but winning as a defensive player will require a full endorsement from the WWL. That will only come if he has a few “Mizzou like” games against some high profile teams on national TV before the ballots are sent in and……only if the USC QB stubs his toe. Almost impossible to beat the offensive stars out.

Yup — he would need numbers on the order of something like: 15-20 Sacks; >10 Forced fumbles; >90 Tackles and then toss in a handful of INTs. And, of course, if he is held on half the snaps in a game those numbers won’t be coming. The important element, teamwise, is his continual attraction of double-team schemes. With the assembled DLine available around JJones there will be gaps and shaky O-lineman to exploit all through the year!
Still, maybe with a few high profile plays in big-time (UF/SEC Title) games he gets to spice up what has become a yardage Award.

Ok here is the gloom. Willie-Mart made the call to offer Chase Vasser a ‘ship before JJ. Snapshot of a why Georgia had a decline.
Now the awesome. He is incredible, but what jumps out to me is how many plays he gets pressure and still is around the play down field. He makes plays on both ends of the same play. I knew his performance was great, but this video allows you to see just how awesome he played.

Not to hijack this from the JJ discussion because he deserves all the accolades he gets but what is going on with holding calls in 2012? I recognize the inconsistency of SEC refs and how bad they are, but this year there have been many flagrant holding calls in front of officials that get no calls. Against JJ sure, but I have seen several others where the jersey is stretched 8 inches from the body, or the shoulder pads are visible and there is no flag.
This isn’t a call for conspiracy enthusiasts to come out, we have benefited from that as well. I just wonder if the degree of enforcement resulting in fewer calls hasn’t been dictated to crews by the league office.

I’m gonna try to be objective (although SEC refs rank just below Gargamel in my psyche) and say that I have noticed the same thing, and it doesn’t seem to be in favor of one team or the other. Same with pass interference…a lot is being overlooked. Problem is, you let it go, let it go, let it go, and then “call it” on a crucial play and everyone gets hysterical. Consistency, please!

I don’t like it, Macallan. If there is a rule, it needs to be enforced w/ predictability and regularity. Players always have been able to get away w/ holding to some extent but only when it wasn’t the very thing that made the play successful. Hence, refs always made calls for: (1) holding on reach blocks in a sweep; and (2) grabbing jersey to prevent a sack.
Now, all bets are off.
It drives me crazy. On reach blocks and blown pass-blocking assignments, it is completely unfair to grab jersey flagrantly. It takes no skill to hold a jersey, and OLs only do it is when they get their asses kicked on a play. As an edge rusher (or outside run defender), you deserve your sack/TFL when you’ve beaten your man. The defense deserves that. I can’t imagine the frustration when you can’t make it to the QB b/c a left tackle is literally holding the BACK of your jersey directly in the ref’s view.

What if our offense would have been last season had we not gotten flagged every time Orson Charles got called for holding the reach block on a pitch play?
Blockers shouldn’t get a pass simply b/c they got their ass kicked or because they have the hardest block to execute on the field.

And that is my point, consistency and a clear spelling out of the call. Your reaching and grabbing, or any play where the jersey is stretched is enough for me. I have no issue with hands on a players body trunk, just grabbing of hands, feet, or jerseys. Those are the clearest to differentiate and lead to consistency of enforcement. Seems that is not even called this year even when done in the open. Has to be very confusing to coaches as to what, and when holding will be called.

That’s why the option doesn’t work in the NFL consistently enough to bother w/ it. Players like JJ are so athletic that they can stick w/ the QB long enough to force the pitch . . . and then go tackle the pitch man.

The voting for best player in CFB will take a back seat to the Draft where they really take the measure of the man. Jarvis is everything that the Heisman is about, but the voters will have to get to know him as a person before they place their vote. If they do, I have no doubt as to the outcome for Jarvis Jones. I’m thinking of shortening his name to Jalajones.
