I’m not sure that the magnitude of Georgia’s offensive performance against FAU has sunk in with us.
Georgia’s 713 total [yards] is tied for sixth in SEC history for a single game and the most in the league since Florida had 705 yards against The Citadel in 2008.
Actually, 713 is more than 705… but I digress. Anyway, note that’s a comparison to the Tebow-Harvin national champion Gator team in a game against a 1-AA defense. Nobody since then, not the ’08 Gators, not the Newton-led 2010 Auburn team that won the national title with an offensive barrage that season, not any of Petrino’s prolific Arkansas offenses, has done that. It’s not like SEC teams haven’t played a few cupcakes on occasion during that time, either.
Yet there’s Georgia, offensive warts and all. Somebody must be doing something right.

There’s no doubt it was an impressive outing and many of us are acutely aware of the feat. I think some of us UGA fans have just been conditioned to look for the poo-covered lining of the cloud we float on after a big performance. (I’m not sure what I just said.)

This! We had drives of 10, 9, -1, and 3 yards in the 4th quarter using 2nd and 3rd stringers. Had we left in starters and hadn’t started playing clock, It would have easily been 800-900 yards. When was the last time a SEC team had 900 yards of offense?

I have been somewhere between surprised and amazed with our offense thus far. It’s really much more diverse than I expected. That could mean very good things for upcoming games in Columbia and JAX.

Kentucky vs. Louisville in 1998 – 801 yards
Vandy vs. Davidson in 1969 – 798 yards
Florida vs. West Texas State in 1982 – 774 yards
LSU vs. Rice in 1977 – 746 yards
Georgia also tied Arkansas’ total against North Texas in 2007.

Bama had four different running backs go over 100 yards in that VPI (as they were called then) game, and scored 77 points on eleven offensive possessions. The only time they were stopped and forced to punt, the punter dropped the snap and then ran for a first down. But Virginia Tech did score 7, which as the bumper stickers pointed out later in the season was more than Auburn managed that year.

Seriously excited about our offensive potential this year. Hoping we hang 40+ on Vandy on Saturday. And then on everyone else for the rest of the year. Bobo is doing lots of new, smart stuff. I’m happy to see the Pistol and to see the toss we took from LSU.

We have a running game now, which leads to all kinds of offensive goodness. It takes pressure of Murray and the O line, Murray can set his feet and hit his receivers. And those receivers are fast and (usually) sure handed. If we can continue to work our tight ends into the game plan, this offense can light some people up.

Not to throw a wrench in all this tentative Bobo love, but I’d argue we need to give Grantham his due for our new offense. Bobo himself said that the 4-wide offense developed “organically” over the spring. To figure out what that means, I re-checked some old articles, and our D apparently shut the O down — until the O decided to start passing a lot more often. Who would’ve thought that practicing against good D makes for good offense?

Macallan, right there with you. Against MU we didn’t go 4 wide until right before halftime … and then for 2 killer drives right afterwards. That’s 3 solid “spread” drives against a legit defense. The rest of our drives stalled (if they didn’t start inside Mizzou’s own 10), but at least 5 stops were due to drops or penalties.
And to agree with Otto, as soon as we go through Sakerlina and UF, we’ll know if we’re good for more than 3 drives per game. I sure hope so, otherwise I have to drink stronger liquor for worse reasons.

Yeah, it was very good. And I am hardly a Bobo basher. But guys, this was FAU. That is the worst defensive team I have ever seen between the hedges. Dreadful is much too kind.
Just keeping things in perspective. I like what I am seeing, but 700 yards against FAU doesn’t exactly stoke me very much.

We didn’t put up 700 yards on Tennessee Tech a few years ago. I think they’re the worst team I’ve ever seen.

We didn’t crack 400 yards against Western Carolina in 2007. With a #1 DC at QB, Moreno at RB, and were only up 17-9 with a minute to go before halftime.

The thing that CMR had at fsu that he hasn’t had until this year is more than 2 wr’s that he could count on. We finally have a situation where we make defenses defend the length a breadth of the field. That will take some pressure off an otherwise mediocre offensive line since crowding the box and bringing extra pressure can be exploited. It we can protect well enough to incorporate the TE’s into the attack we’ll even be better.
