‘Cocky talk

Gotta admit this was pretty nervy:

But when a threatening comment is made just outside a locker room less than an hour before kickoff, it will resonate and reverberate as loudly as any stadium roar. This is what happened Saturday night on the field at Tiger Stadium just outside the chute that goes to LSU’s locker room, according to LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger:

“We’re coming for you, 8,” a South Carolina player told Mettenberger, who wears No. 8.

“You’re not going to make it through the game,” South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney said.

You know, when you’ve got a team that’s sleepwalking through its schedule, as LSU had been lately, the first rule is don’t do anything to wake it up.  Especially when you’re traveling.  Well played, gentlemen.

Afterwards Clowney said that some of his teammates didn’t play as hard as they could have, you know, maybe they were scared.

I hate that…I honestly wanted SC to win. I know that our best chance at the SECCG was for SC to lose, and I find comfort in the fact that their loos is good for us.
But, on a totally different level, I just like the idea of someone that beats us down, looking really good in their other games and beating everyone else handily. It makes us look ‘not as bad.’

    • AthensHomerDawg

Sooooo…. if somebody stole your girlfriend you would be fine if he stole your second gal too. That way everyone would know that he really was that much better than you?

      • Hogbody Spradlin

Wrong analogy AHD. More like if a playground tough guy whips your ass you hope he whips everybody else’s ass so you don’t look as much of a sissy.

        • AthensHomerDawg

          Yeah. Yours was better.

          • Scorpio Jones, III

Granted I am easy to confuse about football, since I mostly only walked by the Arena and all…but Ida thought South Carolina winning makes us look better.

Course the view from the second tier is always a little confused.

            • JG Shellnutt

Yeah, that’s what I was trying to say. I know that with their loss, we have a chance at the SECCG now, but if SC just whipped everyone all year, I feel like it would make our loss a bit more palatable.

              • Scott W.

Yeah getting a second chance doesn’t take the sting out of that ass beating…wait, what?!

              • James Stephenson

Except, lets be honest the only reason SC whipped us so badly is they got up early and had home field. If they had played LSU at home, they win that game. In College football, home field matters, when you have loud fans anyway.

                • Billy Brandenburgh

The only reason they beat us is because they were more man than us. Did you see the play of our offensive and defensive lines? We could have left them both on the bus.

  3. What SC did a week ago was unsustainable. It was like when we went to LSU in 2008 and lit the place up firing on all cyclinders. Then came home to black out against Alabama. West Virginia is the latest flame out. Playing at 110% week after week is impossible. Clearly SC was not as good as they looked on the 6th and we aren’t as bad as we looked.

Clowney didn’t look too good on that first drive of the second half when LSU ran right at him time after time. You think the Gators won’t pay close attention to that?

    • Hogbody Spradlin

I think the 2008 LSU game was after the Bama game.

      • SSB Charley

It was. The blackout game was in late September. The LSU game was in mid October. Possibly a week before the game against UF.

        • heyberto

I think we had just played ASU in Tempe

          • Mayor of Dawgtown

UGA played ASU in Tempe the week before UGA played Bama in Athens in the infamous “blackout” game. I think that may be what you were saying.

            • 79Dawg

We followed whipping LSU in 2008 with getting blown out in Jacksonville the next week….

              • RocketDawg

I think that the game you are referring to is the 2004 destruction of LSU followed by the egg laying the next week against an inferior UT team with a true Freshman QB.

    • Uglydawg

The way to handle Clowney on pass plays is to run the play action right at him, with the full back coming at a full head of steam. Trying to put a slower and less experienced lineman to pick him up as he comes around the edge is a waste of time…Run right at him until he feels like there’s a contract on him…it can be done.

    • Hackerdog

“Clearly … we aren’t as bad as we looked.”

      That is not clear.

    • Billy Brandenburgh

I wouldn’t call it lighting the place up in Baton Rouge, 2008. We gave up 38pts. Just so happens they gave us that game by giving us two defensive touchdowns. Let’s remember that LSU is a better team than we are playing at home…. that’s why USCe lost to them. I think we could play USCe 10 more times and we’d lose 8 of them.

  4. sniffer

Couple of random thoughts…all the batted down and blocked passes! I thought Murrey’s height was the cause (and Clowneys freakishness) but wow. Also, Shaw is fast for a wh……Driskell now scares me to death.

    • Scorpio Jones, III

Did we cancel the Kentucky game?

      • sniffer

No, and the time has arrived to begin worrying about our effort (not so much the outcome) against KY. I’m with you on that. Win or lose against the ‘Cats, Driskell still scares me.

Gosh, you’re killing me, SJ<IV, now I'm worrying about the SCe-UF game. I picked a bad week to give up Zanax…

        • Scorpio Jones, III

Jes worry bout dem Cats….whatever happens with them other folks will work itself out…Call Steve Spurrier about the zanax…I spec he got a large supply.

Will Muschamp fixin to get the OBC doin some serious retirement planning.

        • When I tuned into GTP…the beginning of week 4, I had to get back on my medication by the end of the week.

  5. Gatriguy

Karma is coming to get cakalacki. What they did to us was the equivalent of our 2004 LSU game. Everything went perfect and it got out of hand early.

    • Uglydawg

Georgia had good yardage on their very first play from scrimmage. The second play they ran a stupid trick that put them in a hole. SC’s first deep pass was intercepted by Georgia, only to be taken away during the tackle. SC leads a charmed life against UGA> I think SC was a better team and better coached and deserved to win…but it should have been much, much closer. I don’t know if UF’s O line can match up with them.

      • Pessimist Bulldog

Haha, told my girl before the game that “If we try to run some end around B.S. on the opening drive, we’re screwed”

  6. Always Someone Else's Fault

You guys think it’s negative around here lately? You should check out some other blogs. Here’s a nice rant from a Texas site:

    No mas

I haven’t read a single comment here, so excuse me if this is redundant.

I am done with Mack Brown. DONE.

I have been one of his bigger apologists the past 14 years. I’ve had season tickets that entire time. I have been to three Rose Bowls. I have been to 27 consecutive OU games. And I am done with you, Mack. DONE. You have shit the bed against OU too many times, and you can’t win shit w/o Black Jesus. And as I watch Tech thump WVA, I realize that the bubble has burst.

Mack, you make me embarrassed to be a Longhorn. I have eaten shit from OU fans one too many times. No man is irreplaceable, and it is time for you to step aside.

DeLoss, my remaining season tickets will be in the mail to you on Monday. I hope you choke on them.

  7. Cock of the Walk

This story sounds like horse-manure by a guy (Mettenberger) – who has zero credibility.

    • AthensHomerDawg

What’s up with the camo and spurs?

      • Cock of the Walk

I think most Gamecock fans hate the gimmicky uniforms. The *only* thing I can say in their defense, is that they will be auctioned off to raise money for Wounded Warrior Project – which I think we call can agree is a worthy cause. Doesn’t mean I don’t hate the look, however.

        • AthensHomerDawg

No nothing wrong with that. Just was curious. I hope we auctioned off the “oreo unis” that we wore against the gators that year. Thanks.

      • 81Dog

It was kind of an emergency replacement uniform: the original uniform choice was unavailable for the LSU game, because the Village People hadnt finished sewing all the sequins on it yet.

    • Uglydawg

      Cock, that’s a strong possibility.

  8. SouthGa Dawg

LSU is as good as they were last year. The LSU/Bama game in Death Valley will be as advertised. The LSU/USC game was the definition of how hard it is to go undefeated in SEC play.

    • Scorpio Jones, III

LSU is good where Carolina ain’t. And that po old sad retread from the Shadow of the Great Pumpkin….I just caint say this enough…that ole Chief that Knoxville showed the door? Well, that LSU defense sho do Get After They Ass.

Wonder if they any trut to de rumor SOD had his hip done in preparation for a return to the courtroom?

      • SouthGa Dawg

The LSU defense shut down the zone read and Shaw’s running, and Lattimore for the most part. LSU’s D also flys around the field the whole game – something UGA doesn’t do. Our D this year is very similar to Donnan’s D in the late 90′s – NFL starters everywhere but no killer instinct. Bunch of front runners…we have to get ahead for our guys to keep their interest. Man, I wish we played like LSU’s D. Did I mention I love how LSU plays defense?

        • 79Dawg

Did not watch the game intensively, but I thought one thing that LSU did was they brought pressure up the middle and pushed the pocket back, not from the edge; this kept Shaw from getting a lot of running lanes.
Jarvis could bring the pressure from the edge against a poor/banged-up O-line like Missouri’s, but the South Carolina tackles just bounced him and naturally pushed him to the outside, opening up big running lanes. I think bringing pressure up the middle, rather than from the edge, will be the key to controlling Driskel instead of getting torched like Vandy did last night….

      • Cosmic Dawg

I sense you are taking advantage of the bye week to read some Joel Chandler Harris or Mark Twain…

    • ETennDawg

Unless you have the schedule we have this year. After seeing how other schedules have turned out, I can see what others were crying about. Having said that, you can only play the games the SEC schedules.

Why cant LSU find themselves a decent QB? Scares me to think of what they would be with a good QB!

  9. Scorpio Jones, III

When you can look down on Tennessee, even from the cheap seats on the second tier, you know them Vols are deeply in doo doo.

  10. Scorpio Jones, III

“If you are fast, and you are lucky,

You’ll never see that hangin tree….So long Derek….we hardly knew ye.

  11. Castleberry

Thus began the October swoon in yet another Year of the Gamecock.

    • Mayor of Dawgtown

      ‘Cocks lose next week, too.

      • Scorpio Jones, III

That would be my prediction. Course I thought Georgia would beat Carolina, too.

      • Charles

I have a hunch they lose to Tennessee as well. That stout o line and vertical passing game is dangerous.

        • Always Someone Else's Fault

Not dangerous enough to beat MSU. Or Georgia. Or Florida.

Tenn got 7 off of special teams and more than 200 from the rushing attack last night and still found a way to lose. I think they lose to Alabama and SC, and then Dooley has to hold them together for the remaining 4 gimmes. If they don’t show up for either Kentucky or Vandy, he’s gone.

          • Mayor of Dawgtown

SOS is gone already. That said, I still think UT may be good enough to beat a team they are not supposed to beat and SC fits that description.

            • Mayor of Dawgtown

              SOD.

            • Always Someone Else's Fault

It would be nice. SC will be at the end of a Georgia-LSU-Florida string and their 8th game in a row. Vols, on the other hand, will be coming off Bama. So it will be sloppy, and sloppy tends to favor the underdog. That’s my optimistic spin, at any rate.

  12. Spurrier cemented his status as the largest dildo in a profession of dicks with his post-game interview. How many ways can a coach throw his team under the bus? “My QB must have got hit in the head. I kept asking my coaches, ‘Did he get hit in the head?’ He was confused. He threw the ball down the wrong sideline and cost a touchdown. I don’t know what he was thinking. Now, any questions?” (paraphrasing)

  13. Will Trane

Old ball coach tells the half time girl, “did a poor job of calling plays”. “We are going to throw more in the second half”. Better than Bobo who never knows. One pick and another set up a score. The old ball coach loves the game, and his teams have a plan and roster management.

  14. Brian Dawg

I thought the comment about Shaw getting hit in the head was classless and desperate. HBC just doesn’t see why he has to play the teams from “the west side” of the conference.

    • 81Dog

actually, he knows exactly why he has to keep playing them, he just cant stand that he cant seem to beat any of them.

  15. cube

I don’t think we should be the ones lecturing Carolina about how to approach a big game. At least they played with some heart.

  16. Always Someone Else's Fault

If Shaw hits those two deep routes, they win. Spurrier knew it, and he reacted how he normally does when a QB makes a crucial error – put more pressure on the QB until he either redeems himself or makes an even bigger mistake.

This is really the first time Shaw has had to deal with being tossed under the bus, a Spurrier QB ritual. I could see Spurrier mismanaging the situation badly enough to cost his team more games.

  17. Spike

    Has Shaw met Terry Dean?

  18. I had no idea how perfectly this schedule works out . We play UF the week after they play USC and the week after we play probably the worst team in the SEC. Florida wins but Dreskel gets the shit beat out of him… how perfect is this set up. We get the head to head with UF and we get the honor of have Alabama kick our ass in Atlanta. Spurrier buys the Cocks a ring for beating UGA 3 years in a row but not a championship ring. I’ll live with this because nobody is beating that Alabama team….NOBODY.
