The Bobby Petrino sweepstakes

Admittedly, no SEC athletic director in his right mind is ready to come out publicly and say he’d consider hiring Petrino, because nobody wants to have to answer to this kind of thinking – yet:

My answer was that hopefully neither school will hire him. Hopefully no one anywhere will hire the former Arkansas football coach who somehow forgot he was a married father long enough to have an affair with an athletic department employee, promoted her to a job she may or may not have been qualified to have, then lied about all of it to his athletic director.

Any university that would hire Petrino should disallow any pretense that ethics, character and decency are a part of its mission statement.

Just come right out and say, “Our motto is ‘The End Justifies the Means.’ We’re changing our athletic nickname to Pigs, Snakes or Cockroaches — at least until the ACLU or Humane Society charge that’s an affront to pigs, snakes and cockroaches — and we’re trying to hire John Edwards or Arnold Schwarzenegger as our school president.”

But I’d be willing to bet a substantial amount of money that Petrino’s name has been breached behind closed doors.  And more than once.  Which doors?  Well, speaking of betting money, check out these three lines that greeted me this morning:

  • Alabama at Tennessee +20.5
  • Georgia at Kentucky +28.5
  • Auburn at Vanderbilt -7.5 (!)

When’s the last time Auburn was an underdog to Vandy?

To add insult to injury, I doubt I’d pick any of the ‘dogs to cover.  Those are lost seasons and you’ve got to figure there’s enough restlessness in the respective fan bases to encourage at least one AD to hold his nose and proclaim that he’s convinced Bobby Petrino is a changed man.  Of course, there are two ways you can go from there – you can hold stealth negotiations and announce the hire as a fait accompli, or you can let word get out that you’re seriously considering the possibility of hiring the man.  I’m hoping for the latter, if only to smoke out all the desperate actors.

The only thing more embarrassing than hiring Petrino would be to get in a bidding war for his services and lose out to another conference school.

As for the buyout money that Wiedmer frets over, I wouldn’t be too concerned.  Never underestimate the size of frustrated alums’/supporters’ checkbooks.  And this is what SEC TV money’s for, anyway.

Don’t think UT would be that stupid with Kiffie still apart of recent memory. Same on UK as they understand they will always suck at football. Now Auburn is just sleazy enough to do it although Petrino is only a career 17-15 in the SEC.

On the flip side, it’s probably UK’s best shot at buying a quality X’s and O’s coach at a discount.

How many former NFL head coaches, no matter their NFL track record, would realistically consider UK otherwise? Plus Bobby has a definite proven track record in the state of Kentucky

We all know auburn would be “all in” but I think tennessee, despite the kiffin debacle, might be interested in him too considering their lack of moral fortitude regarding inappropriate behavior by their football players. I would love to see a public bidding war between the two where petrino comes out making double what the previous head coach was pulling in.

  5. Inappropriate behavior by football players is one thing; inappropriate behavior by a HC is another. Auburn would never consider him. The supporters are too self righteous.

Joy, I respectfully disagree. The alumni and financial support base will consider anyone who they think will put them on solid footing to compete with Alabama. Whether the timing is right remains to be seen. The Iron Bowl is their reason for existence. Casual fans may not like the smell, but they could get used to holding their noses if they begin to win again.

When you say “they”, are you referring to fans or decision makers. The fans were not “consulted” when Jacobs, Lowder,et al., brought Chizic in and they were as baffled as everyone else was. The thought, even then, was that the hiring of Chizic was a bridge to the next coach.

Do you think Petrino could put on a convincing enough “I have sinned and I’ve turned to the Lord for forgiveness” act that Auburn would embrace him (outwardly, at least) as a heartwarming redemption story? If they can stick their heads in the sand and act like Cam Newton’s recruitment was totally above board, I think they could make, shall we say, certain ethical allowances for Petrino.

Muschamp is the “coach in waiting”. Looking for that next opportunity. Nothing has changed except his jersey. He use to wear red and black once upon a time. Meyer’s heart condition and need for family time was going to put him in the broadcast booth. Can we place that under the heading “when has something like that ever happened?” Who knows what is driving them?

They can want it all they want, but there’s no reason for Muschamp to go from Florida to Texas. He’s unbeaten in Year 2 and has a damn good team despite the lack of a quarterback. He has two tough (at least, I hope Georgia will be tough) games left between his team and a very unexpected potential berth in the Dome. He might just have the better team going into the Florida State game. Whatever happens over the last six ballgames, he’s got himself set up for an offseason of optimism and good recruiting. Why leave that and go into an unstable situation with an underachieving football team? Texas has a lot of money, but it’s not like Florida doesn’t.

Here’s the thing, Petrino has ALWAYS been a douche. Everywhere he’s been. For his entire career. Everybody knows it. He didn’t suddenly become a douche at Arkansas. Look at the way he has left every single job he has ever had. Yet SOMEBODY is always willing to hire him. Unfortunately, this time will be no different. Makes me sick to my stomach, but I think it’s true.

The SEC should have a rule against hiring any employee into a schools athletic dept. if that person has previously cause embarassment to the conference to the point that they were fired.
I hope I’m right when I say I don’t believe Petrino is going to find a job in the SEC….I also doubt the is the whiz everyone thinks anyway.

I can understand your situation since, in my experience most gals don’t care for ball caps except maybe when they are mowing the grass, which, around my house don’t happen much at all, at all.

See… the selection of which of your many dawg hats to wear during a game has a direct relationship to the outcome of the game.

This is a proven fact, although many folks still try to put this in the same category as Global Warming.

So, what you do is you select, very carefully, that hat to wear the first game…if you win, it’s simple, you keep wearing it….but what happens if your hat works for five games and not for one.

        Whaddaya do?

Thus the hat quandry. It is the attention to these little details that are the difference between a good year and a second-tier year.

For example….does Derek Dooley even wear a hat?

C’mon, let’s get serious! Auburn won’t hire Petrino at the end of this season. They have more moral fiber than that! They’ll wait til some D2 college (or whatever they’re called now) hires him first, then they’ll helicopter him outta there in the middle of that team’s season. I can see the note on the locker room door already… “Tough break, guys, but I’ve decided to go where I’m truly understood and appreciated. Yours faithfully forever, Bobby.”

Sports news…college coaches on the “hot seat” or coaches that are “hot commodities”…Petrino and Gruden are the names pushed and slapped about. Why? Tennessee and Auburn have good staffs. They are working thru some issues, but they have an upside to their program.

My concern is the guys in Athens. Does the AD and Athletic Board keep the same pace. The next three games could be a factor, because all three of the teams can challenge the Dogs…Lexington is not a good place to play at night on the road, followed by a road game to Jaxville against a solid Gator team with an excellant staff, and then the Rebs. I thought Freeze and the Rebs would be tough. They have a good staff and a hard to stop offense. Muschamp and Freeze put together some good coaches and their team show it.

Here are the top coaches for me. First is Dan Mullen at MSU. Mullen is going to have a lot of say in the West. Quietly building a very strong program and team. The latest polls show that. Mullen and Brice Ramsey are a made for each other. Second choice and this coach will not be at Florida long. Pease is a very good coach. No better in college football when it comes to building an offense. Muschamp was brillant in hiring him. This is what CMR should have done rather than keep Bobo. If I am Arkansas this is my guy.

Waiting to see how Friend and Bobo put in some new line packages for the Dawgs and the solid skilled players they have. I’d copy what the Gators are doing on offense. From their first game I was impressed with where they were going. Many were not. Gators sit at 2. Think they will give Carolina another loss.

2010 Georgia, which was objectively pretty crummy, went to Kentucky for a night game and had little trouble. Kentucky might be one of the worst SEC teams of all time. It’d take something catastrophic for the game to be even a one-possession win. A loss is out of the question.

The idea any SEC team, or any team with scruples would hire Petrino is beyond belief to me.

Petrino has a documented history of rotten behavior of one form or another every where he has been, even at Awbun, it is said he was not on anybody’s Christmas card list despite some success as OC.

Surely his escapades at Arkansas, and the destruction he left in his wake there is enough to give even the most desperate AD pause.

There are too many good coaches in Pre-SEC jobs who don’t have the track record of Petrino.

It may be fun to speculate…but really.

Tennessee has a real kharma problem….Majors, to Fulmer to Kiffin to Dooley…in my meeting with the Kharmic Bitches last week, their spokesperson made no bones about the fact the Vols are getting what they deserve.

But even the Vols don’t have the spin doctors it would take to hire Petrino, even a washed, fluffed and folded, re-born Petrino.

Scorp- you need a replay on onerous and joyous. Petrino was an ahole by his underhanded tactics with a sitting Aub coach, the total lack of character and spine when he left the Falcons and yet another shameless portrayal of family man while at Ark.

Yet, in between he was forgiven and only looked at as to coaching abilities once he took a job. I think it remains the same; he has debauchery to character that we haven’t heard of and for which he will be forgiven when he takes another job, no matter where. At some schools he could do a big steamy one on the desktop at his first press conference and every one would laugh it off as “That’s just ol’ Bobby. Ain’t he somethin’ else?”

Being sleazy and cheating with the NCAA is one thing, but I think that Petrino may have burned himself by opening up the school to lawsuits based on the hiring of the mistress (not to mention essentially being her sugar daddy with the AD’s money).

You can get away with cheating as long as your cheating was trying to win games and make the AD look good with the boosters. You can’t get away with self serving cheating that makes your boss look foolish.
