Georgia’s defense now has been back at full strength on the field for two games after safety Bacarri Rambo and linebacker Alec Ogletree returned from suspension.
“I guess it took those guys a little while to get in game shape and game mode, but now I think there’s no excuses,” he said. “We’ve got to go out and get the job done.”
Meaning there were excuses before?
Speaking of which, this is about as lame as it gets.
Bobo mentioned last week on Georgia’s call-in show that the Bulldogs prepared during the gameweek with plenty of crowd noise, but may have overdone it.
“Going back talking as a staff maybe we did a little bit too much crowd noise and maybe shouldn’t do crowd noise until Thursday,” Bobo said. “We didn’t get to teach as much as we wanted to with all of the crowd noise.”
Well, at least they got the silent snap count routine honed so that Clowney could follow along.
Seriously, after all these years of playing in hostile environments, these guys still haven’t figured out how much practice time needs to be devoted to it? The mind, she is boggled by that.
None of that’s going to matter this week – not when Kentucky’s quarterback situation looks like this – but two things would be nice if Georgia’s defense does shut down the ‘Cats and the Dawgs romp. One would be that they don’t read too much into putting a hurt on the nation’s 116th-ranked team in total offense. The other would be that instead of wasting too much time worrying about the things they can’t control in Jacksonville, the staff actually sits down to formulate a game plan that goes after Florida.

I would prefer the coaches just say “We got our butts whooped by a better team, ’nuff said”. Everything else is embarrassing.

Thank you. I mean, come on, coach. The atmosphere in Williams-Brice was electric, but it wasn’t THAT electric. You’re telling me that the coaches thought that it would be louder than it always has been? Tennessee on a bad year is louder than that place was two weeks ago. Why in the world wouldn’t they just stick with what the hell has always worked for crowd noise? Between that and Richt and Co. admitting they coached scared when they scrapped everything that has worked up til this point, it just makes me mad enough to spit.

This is why I was so bothered by Mark Richt’s comments after starting 2008 ranked number 1. He said he preferred not to start that high– something about the pressure and distractions and being a target being too much.
I thought then that his comments were lame and still do now, and excuses like this just remind me of it. You don’t want to be number one? Are you saying that you don’t want the pressure and expectations of being a top program, then? You’re saying you don’t want the opportunity to teach the players to deal with being a target game on everybody’s schedule each week?
Things like that, those are the things that make me think we’ll never get to the top. The attitude appears to be–please, correct me if I’m wrong–that we’re not prepared for and do not even want that kind of limelight.

For those of us with little or no arena experience, and my sense is that applies to a whole lot more of us than not, I don’t have any problem with Richt ruminating publicly on what went wrong…first we are offended by his comments about experience in the arena, then when he tries to offer some actual observational evidence we bitch about that, too.

I don’t like to bitch about Richt, actually. I like to bitch about being 0-9 against the top 15 over three years. I think if you were to review my posting track record you’d find not so much bitching the last few years–even after losses.
But I do get my hopes up, and then this. I love Mark Richt but I want to win these games on occasion too, and losing 35-7 in a game we were supposed to compete does bring out my complaining side, yes.
I’m sure everyone is sick of the complaints. I get tired of that too. But I am also tired of excuses.

I think the frustration is rooted in taking responsibility and being honest about the problems. People want to hear him vocalize the weaknesses and talk about how he intends to fix those problems.
During the post-game presser he did not mention continual problems on special teams (for years now), a struggling defense which returned 9 starters, or how the offense craps their pants in big games. Oh and let’s not forget, how can we get “whipped” when we have a new and invigorated S&C program?

damn losses make everyone just cynical as hell don’t they. I assume a player who is actually out on the field has some idea of what he is talking about and that doing your job at game speed and under game conditions does take an adjustment period. If he and several others say there were communication issues I think I’ll just take him at his word.. I’m I the only one that thought Sanders Cumming and Vasser both look lost in space a couple times during the FAU and Tenn games but neither of those teams were capable of exploiting the rust….. the little pricks were.
It does strike me that if the kids and the Coaches say something they’re making excuses and if they say nothing than we’ll label them as clueless. We’re 5-1 people and regardless of what you read from the naysayers we’re still in this thing. Sources out of Gainesville say that Boom is trying to time UF’s collapse so that it occurs against his alma mater …at least that’s what illumanati Dawg told me

It’s a funny scenario. Richt says that they wanted to change schemes to help the Oline, then Bobo says that because of crowd noise simulation they weren’t able to teach as much as they wanted.

I wonder how much of this vitriol is based on the absurd notion, planted by the bimbos who blather about teams before they touch the field, that this team was an obvious pre-season candidate for the national championship?
When, pray, is it going to get through to us that the folks who write the pre-season crap are basing their assumptions on bullshit.
The obvious offensive line depth and experience issue, the freshmen in the kicking game, the lack of experience of the skill players in the running game
all indicated to me, after looking around the conference we had the slimmest chance to go back to Atlanta, other than to play Tech, and that a shot at a national championship was ridiculous…this year.
Next season looked might good to me…at the beginning of this season.
Sure, I’m just one of those bimbos, just like the rest of us, but I don’t ignore the obvious weak spots on this team, and neither did Steve Spurrier…not that I have Steve’s view of things, although I did play a lot of golf at one point in my life.
We still have a chance to have a good season…second-tier, maybe but pretty good. Next year this oughta be a pretty good football team.

That’s a very good point, SJ3. I know a lot of us were buying into the hype (I sure as hell was walking out of Sanford after the Vandy game), but there was no getting around the fact that we had major, major question marks. As you mentioned, inexperience and depth issues with the O-line and a freshmen punter and kicker.
With that said, had we not “outsmarted” ourselves, as someone has previously said, we should have at least been competitive if not won against SCAR.
It’s one game at a time now. If we play a strong game against Kentucky, I’ll feel pretty good about things…

I thought Vandy was a better team than what they show today. Our victory over Vandy encouraged us all. The first quarter against UT- heck I thought we were overcoming so many short comings. Then there was the 2nd quarter and we are who we thought we were. Inadequate depth on the O line, POOR special teams play, under signing, suspensions of key players. Those are the things that make you pull your hair out. I can deal with the freshman kickers etc. It wasn’t the freshman kicker that caused the meltdown in Chickumbia. The problems that lead to the meltdown started some time ago. I admire CMR as much as anyone. I am puzzled by some of the mistakes we are making at this point in his career.

Next year? You mean the year the entire defense will basically be replaced? The year that 1/3 of the roster will likely be true freshman? Next year’s team will be considered successful if they can make it to Nashville or Memphis in December.

Which, if recent history (last 3 years) repeats itself, we will be completely unprepared for. Our game plan will appear to have been drawn up by the proverbial random monkeys banging on typewriters and once again the Bulldawg nation will be totally dumbfounded and completely embarrassed. So here is Richt and HoneyBobo’s opportunity to prove us wrong. Please, dear God prove us wrong. I like Mark Richt. Please prove me wrong coach. No fake juice. No gimmicks. Otherwise, you may well be the only two-loss coach sitting on a hot seat. I’ve heard more vitriol in the last week than two years ago when we were losing fairly regularly. I get the feeling that another bad day in Jacksonville may turn large portions of the fan base against Richt. That would be unfortunate. No team is without weaknesses. To most observers that watched last year’s team–pundits, Dawg fans, all of us– this looked like a pretty competitive year based on an outstanding defense and some weapons on offense.
Can the defense get its act together? That, to me, is the key to the rest of the season.

They may be able to do it. Jarvis Jones was on exactly no one’s All-American lists prior to the Florida game last year (and had fewer sacks than he has through 5 games this season).
That said, if they play him at anything less than 100% against Kentucky and he aggravates his groin or ankle, I’m going to be royally pissed.

You know what, though? This team *should* have been a contender. I’m not saying necessarily go all the way – you get a bad break here and there – but we have NC talent on this team. This D should be top five in the country, at least, and we have seen an O that is top ten.
Part of the reason I’m so pissed is not losing, but you just hate to see something go to waste, even if it’s not your own team…and you hate it for the kids and the coaches, too. There was just not enough effort and not enough smarts put in that equation somewhere, I don’t know who you hang it on, but if given a choice between 20-year olds and the men who are supposed to lead them, I think you have to blame the coaches.

Putting coaching aside in an interview last August with ESPN, Richt recounted how he has always played second fiddle on somebody considered better, at Miami, NFL, he is even second fiddle at FSU to the HC. I wonder if this fate or luck still in play here. Playing second fiddle in the East, or the SEC, or the Nation blah, blah, blah, blah.

The 10 game run last year was the act of a staff that at last felt like they had better perform or their cushy jobs at UGA would be over. Once they made it to the SECC game they were sure thay were safe and returned to form. The MSU game only confirms this. We are who the entire SEC thinks we are a team that outmans the have nots and loses to the Big Boys. Sad but true and there is nothing we, the fans, can do about it.

I understand there are incentives in Coach Richt’s contract for the SEC ($200K) and BCS ($800K) championships, but they are rather small compared with a $2.8M base. I also understand Richt’s buyouts are:
$4.8M if let go after this season;
$2.4M if let go after the 2013 season;
$1.6M if let go after the 2014 season; and
$800K if let go after the 2015 season.
It is also shaping up to be a sellers market in our region this year. UK, Ark, AU, UT, and possibly GT will be buyers who will likely pay top dollar on top of any buy-out.
In short, he will be our coach next season.
Any increased competitiveness we see will not likely be money-driven. It would be more likely be driven by reputation, life-style, or his ability to recruit players or keep members of the coaching staff. Best thing we can do is let our dissatisfaction with UGA’s recruiting and suspension policies be heard at the AD, (new) president, or board-level.

Can’t speak for the health of Arkansas or UK, but UT and Tech certainly won’t have tons of money to spend (UT’s athletic budget is a surprising mess), and Chizick has a $7 million buyout (and ol’ Bobby L. is in no position to cut AU a check anymore).

The issue here is not what CMR says or doesn’t say. It’s not in getting our asses kicked by ranked teams or not, or how often that happens, or when it started, or whatever. Despite eggings and negative comments, most of our fans do not live and die for national championships.
There are ONLY two issues that really got our fans upset about SC game – actually probably these are the only two issues that will ever REALLY get our fans upset, save maybe off-field or ethical issues.
First issue is, DANGIT, HOW ARE THESE KIDS NOT IN POSITION / HOW CAN AN ALL-SENIOR DEFENSE NOT KNOW THEIR ROLES IN YEAR THREE OF A SYSTEM?
The second issue here is: NOBODY CARES IF YOU GET BEAT. BUT SHOW THE F UP AND FIGHT SOMEBODY.
