Agree. To me that Auburn game in 2006 was our last true upset win — a game we won despite being a pretty clear underdog.

9-13 against top 10 teams is pretty solid although the whole exercise is a bit misleading. LSU in 2008 was #11 going into the game…Alabama was #10. So he gets credit for the loss but not the win due to one place in the AP standings at the time of the game? Take out 2009 and 2010, which were bad years…and Richt is 8-9 against top 10 opponents. (Sorry…that’s the optimist in me hoping that those two years will end up being anomalies in a long line of Richt SEC Championships.)
Anywho…for comparison’s sake, Saban is 22-18 in his career against top 10 teams…6-7 at MSU, 5-5 at LSU, and 11-6(!) at Bama. (interestingly…take out 2011’s national championship team and Saban is ~only~ 7-6 against top 10 teams at Bama…that 2011 team was truly special.)

While what LSU accomplished last year had me convinced that they got screwed because they had to play ‘Bama again, I was certainly in the unpopular minority at my LSU friends’ house after Game of the Century Part 1 when I opined that ‘Bama was the better team, but kept shooting itself in the foot in that game with missed field goals. I firmly believe that ‘Bama team last year was a better team than LSU, but LSU had a resume that was freaking unapproachable by anybody else in America.

Thanks for finding those statistics. It should not surprise anyone that Saban, lord and god of all things college football, is barely above 500 against top-10 teams. Top-10 teams are Top-10 teams for a reason – because they’re really good and rarely lose! I would imagine the cumulative record of Top-10 teams for most years is in excess of .750 or .800, if not higher. That means the cumulative winning percentage for all of college football against Top-10 teams each year is .250 or less (again I’m estimating).
In that light, Coach Richt’s winning percentage against Top-10 teams is below average, but it is not horrible. Irwin also makes a good point (implicitly) that Top-10 record is a somewhat arbitrary cutoff (i.e. the 2008 LSU team that was ranked #11 was a great win against a good team).
All this simply goes to show that there are “lies, damn lies and statistics”. Everyone can find a statistic to rationalize and reinforce their preconceived notions and beliefs…..

Off topic, but true or false? Ole Miss is the only SEC team to which Mark Richt has never lost (excluding Mizzou and TAMU). Seems like I can remember losses to everyone else during Richt’s tenure.

I remember most of those. 2001 was at Ole Miss. I believe Verron Haynes had a big game and we pounded it on the ground a lot that day. 2002 was in the rain in Athens, and we got to see Eli Manning between the hedges. 2006 was that awful effort in a late night game, with Joe Cox at the helm after he had led the comeback against Colorado the week before. I seem to remember a call or two going our way that allowed us to win. In 2007, if I remember correctly, they kept it close early, but we pulled away late. And last year’s game left us griping about special teams woes and trick plays. Still, 5 wins is 5 wins. Ole Miss had its best shot in 2006, if you ask me.

The 2002 game was the game after the Florida loss and was the start of one of the most fun 5 game runs I’ve had as a Georgia fan. (Ole Miss, Auburn, GA Tech, Arky, FSU) That game was close (21-17 at half) until the Dawgs just took over the clock in the second half. Ole Miss only ran 17 plays in the half…and UGA killed the game with a 10:46, 19 play drive that ended with a knee on the 7 yard line. Musa had a game.
The 2006 game was brutal. I was at that game in Oxford…Matt Stafford actually came in and saved our bacon with a decent 2nd half performance. The next week was probably the most depressing night I’ve had in Athens (I thankfully missed the Bama game in 2008)…Joe T gets the start despite missing 3 games against UT and Sanford was as loud as it ever gets after Mikey runs back an 86 yard punt…then the 3rd Q starts and the wheels fall off b/c David Cutcliffe is greater than Willie Martinez.

That was a great 5-game run. The Michael Johnson game at AU, 51-7 over Tech, an SECCG blowout, and a Sugar Bowl win. It’s one of only two times in Richt’s tenure that I was sure we could beat any team in the nation.

Which Ole Miss game, may have even been in the Donnan era, was unbelievably cold and rainy.
No more than 40-45K at that game. TOPS

I think you’re remembering 2002. Almost all the seats were filled at kickoff, lots of red ponchos, but the persistent rain and cold drove many to the exits early. I’d guess there were only about 30-35K by game’s end. Earlier this year, I remember a discussion about the hottest games fans had ever attended. Ole Miss 2002 deserves a place in the coldest and wettest. But hey, at least we won. It could have been GT 2000 (cold, rainy, and a L).

Am pretty sure it was raining cats and dogs for Ole Miss in 2000 – it was the week before Thanksgiving and Tech, and was definitely after Auburn (so it wasn’t 2002) (although it may have been raining in 2002, I don’t seem to remember that one as well….)
I believe the 2006 game was the one where we were down early, they blocked our punt near our goalline, we recovered the blocked punt, the totally competent SEC refs awarded us the ball and we were able to go down and score and hang on….

I remember that 10 minute, game-killing drive in 02. That was, by far, the most impressive non-scoring drive in the history of football. 19!! plays, in-freaking-credible.

It seems like what teams are ranked when you play them is contingent on when you play them…early in the year it is a total guess but teams that are in the Top 10 at the end of the year have generally done something to earn that ranking. Wouldn’t it make more sense to look at games against Top 10 opponents based on their final ranking? Also, look at how many of these losses were against teams that went on to be national champions (or undefeated). The strength of the SEC.

It was a huge win, and hopefully a harbinger of more good things to come. It would be terrific if this is the breaking point where we leave our mediocre ways of the past 4 (+?) years behind and start challenging for the mnc regularly.

All those handicaps that were talked about in great length during the gloom and dooms days following the South Carolina loss up until the Florida win are still in place and are the biggest reason we don’t challenge for it every year. We’re not the football school that most fans want us to be.
