What was likely of greater benefit was a phone call between Johnson and Georgia Southern coach Jeff Monken, who worked for Johnson for 15 years and brought the offense with him to Statesboro when he became the Eagles’ head coach before the 2010 season.
“I think the one thing you can get is who played these certain kinds of blocks the best, in the secondary, who was their best cover guy, who in their defensive line did you think was easier to knock off the ball than another guy,” Monken said. “Who was real stout and you had real trouble getting movement on. Just those things that you can’t see on film. I think those things are valuable.”
As the Yellow Jackets prepare for Saturday’s game against Georgia – a game that Johnson said will require their best game of the year just to have a chance – Johnson is scouring for every advantage. That includes tapping the resources of his former assistants.
Hopefully Monken can give his mentor some special insight into what he can gain from calling a time out in the last few seconds of a game with his team down by thirty+ points. Lord knows, that wouldn’t be the first brilliant move the genius has pulled off at the end of a game.

Johnson and Monken can coach and motivate. Thank goodness the fish fry genius (who I think is funny as all get out) just can’t recruit. He’s a good guy, he just doesn’t – ‘get it’ – that he isn’t the only smart guy in the room. Lucked out to work with Erk Russell and learned enough from Erk to get him to where he is. Too bad FFG didn’t learn the humility part of the Tao of Erk.
Plus Mommas don’t get the stchick – he comes off as a Putz. If he ever drops the condescension (Online Definition = ‘Condescension is an insulting way of talking to other people, as if they were stupid or ignorant.’) and looks in the mirror – he could become a real threat. Naah – its like Jeff Driskell who runs a fast 4.55 forty – it worked in high school, it worked against FCS warmup teams it should work against SEC teams. Unfortunately for Jeffy, when he plays UGA and the SEC he ONLY runs a 4.55 forty. Everybody runs faster than that for a forty or in the case of John Jenkins runs an electron Tron 20! Jeffy hasn’t figured it out and its doubtful Pauly will either.
Fish Fry Johnson just needs to relax, there are a heck of a lot of people in the world as smart or smarter than he is; if he were only a little bit smarter – he would be capable of doing the genetic math.

Why would a “genius” need the help of a former underling? No doubt their relationship can be expected to bring about such conversations but this doesn’t sit particularly well with me. UGA has contributed much more to the rise and success of GSU football than GT could ever. Where was GT when GSU was looking for financial help with “money” football games? I suspect the Ghost of Erk might be a bit unhappy about Monken’s desire to trip the Bulldogs this weekend. Screw both of them, would rather play real football in OOC games.

Monken us actually a pretty likable guy. I respect what he’s done at southern. He just has some loyalty to his old boss. He doesn’t come off like a condescending a-hole like PJ.

“I am obviously pulling for Coach Johnson” is enough for me Puff. As the HC of a program we have been far kinder to than GT, he could have kept that comment to himself. The timeout call was soooo Paul Johnson.
This is akin to Babs and her support of SOD: fine to hope your son succeeds but wearing an orange outfit to the sky boxes at Sanford was over the top…classless even. Get your butt to the TN fan section out in the stadium.

This is an excellent point. I haven’t problem with the fact the guy wants his mentor and friends on the staff to win. Have no problem with him helping Tech out. I have no doubt that Johnson did the same for him last week.
My problem is: when is Tech gonna give Southern a game? We have been playing them for years. Maybe Monken should take stock of what his friends have done for him lately.

This actually terrifies me. Tech will be ready to play and the longer we let it be close, the more comfortable they will be. We need to get up by 2 possessions as quickly as possible.

So the student probably called the mentor and asked how to play against the Dawgs and Johnson obliged. Gee, now that’s more like playing Tech’s Scout Team since Johnson’s brain was behind their game plan. Ok.
The student probably called back after the game and gave an accolade that I receive often, “So, what’s next, Genius?”.
