He didn’t win the game, but he kicked ass in the presser.

If you’ve ever wanted to hear Mark Richt tell Chuck Oliver to eff off in so many words, dial this bad boy up to the 13:20 mark, sit back and enjoy.

Ditto, CD. I for one will admit I have thrown some verbal tomatoes at Murray and others. But not really tonight. (and, though I heard it from stupid Mark May, not for the USC game — that was not on him). He played darn well for what he had to deal with, and made several big throws in clutch situations. Did he make all of them? Did he play perfectly? No. But I am proud of his effort and know he wanted it more than any of us sideline observers could… Go Dawgs!

We lost only by dumb blind LUCK because we were 100% the equal of the best team in the country, a team that takes no plays off and plays with an iron will. And Mark Richt’s team and Mark Richt’s coaches were every bit the equal of that bunch.

I don’t like Chuck Oliver. He is a dweeb. Plus it was a chickenshit way he phrased the question. That said, and leaving Murray out of it because he played his ass off tonight and this problem predates Murray at QB, the question of why UGA under CMR self destructs at the end of games when they are just about to win the game is a legitimate question. More important–who is making these decisions that backfire all the time? Whoever it is (Bobo, CMR himself, somebody else) needs to NOT be allowed to make end of game decisions any more.

    Like

    • Russ

No self-destruction tonight. Time ran out. 80+ yards with no timeouts against the #1 team in the country is pretty damn good, and it was one tipped ball away from a fantastic comeback.

So you want to either fire Bobo or Richt, because those are the head coach and offensive coordinator, and they will make end of game decisions as long as they’re employed. And what the hell are these decisions that backfire all the time? This game, Michigan State and…that’s it. Georgia’s losses from 2006 to now were generally not close enough for a call to backfire. So you, who were lecturing others when they wanted to fire Richt after “one game” want to do the same for two completely different decisions a year apart?

      Like

      • Mayor of Dawgtown

It’s not just 2 games BR. Look at the end of the 2010 Arkansas game, the 2010 Colorado game, the 2010 Florida game, the 2009 LSU game. That’s 6 games in the last 3 years, counting the 2 I mentioned above and there are others. I don’t want to fire anybody. I want our coaching staff to figure out what it is doing wrong at the end of close games that causes the Dawgs to lose rather than win those games and then take action to correct the problem. I had hoped this year that the problem had been fixed but last night demonstrates that it has not. Maybe we have to get a “consultant” like to figure this out. But first, the HC and everybody else needs to quit being in denial and admit that the problem exists.

        Like

        • Biggus Rickus

Holy shit. There are like 18 different scenarios involved in those losses. Every close loss and close win isn’t always the coaches’ fault/to the coaches’ credit. NOBODY wins every close game they play.

To run through those games, the 2010 Arkansas game saw Georgia rally from 14 down, get the ball back and not score. Arkansas eventually scored the winning touchdown against Georgia’s bad defense. 2010 Colorado ended because of a blown blocking assignment by a guy who repeatedly blew blocking assignments that caused a fumble. 2010 Florida ended when Murray forced a pass into coverage. 2009 LSU ended because a terrible penalty set LSU up with good field position and the defense couldn’t make a play. One of those, if I’m being generous, had anything to do with end of game decisions. I think we all want Georgia to win every game, but that’s not realistic. You’re just as bad as the people who wanted to fire Richt immediately after the South Carolina game.

All you are doing in your post is excusing bad decision making because “it’s soooo hard.” Getting it right is what they are supposed to do. Its not like UGA lost to Western New Mexico Tech Jr. College out here. Nick Saban is a good coach and Bama has had 5 recruiting classes ranked in the top 5 nationally.
Maybe Oliver should be thankful that through Richt’s hard work and guidance UGA made it to the SECCG. Yes they are very talented. So is Auburn. And anyone can see the difference there is the coaching.

Was beating undefeated and higher ranked UF this year “winning a big game”?

By the same token, Chuck spent all this week dogging AM as if Georgia has been knocking on the doorsteps of a MNC these past 3 seasons but for AM. Why is beating UF this year or last not count for AM?

If you get a chance to see the longer version of the press conference, check it out. Richt walks in and there’s a couple bottles of water and Gatorade on the table and Richt picks them up and dumps them on the floor under the table before he sits down. The SEC hack grabs his arm and tries to stop Richt by saying something like “these are for Saban” but Rich shoves them onto the floor and sits down. Richt then carefully places his can of CocaCola that he brought in on the table and adjusts it so that the script is in plan view of the cameras. Interesting what these coaches deal with.

I don’t agree. Chuck Oliver does not have to believe in the street chatter in order for him to ask a question about things our fans say. The talk on the streets IS news, and if his readers want to know something Germane to the game, then it is fair for him to ask it. That meme IS news.

The premise was true – people ARE saying that about CMR and his Murray – shoot, even on this very blog, so it IS a legit question. It is just a question about a premise that is uncomfortable and that most of us here disagree with. But CMR should not attack the messenger…

I don’t think CMR handled that very well. He should have said “Anybody who says that…” then gone into a rigorous defense of his program. If Chuck Oliver has been critical in the past, then CMR should have addressed Oliver’s previous criticism.

Well, I didn’t know Oliver’s history. If he writes editorials and in the past has said CMR can’t win the big game that changes things.

I actually agree with the premise that lately CMR has lost the big game more often than he has won it, that is a fact. But that is very different than saying he “can’t”. He has proven that he can, and proven it here at Georgia.

And that doesn’t make me want to change coaches, I think he does a great job and some of these will break our way eventually. This program has come light years since the loss to UCF.

This time “the king” didn’t have the balls to say “yes, I say that on my show” to Coach Richt but rather lied to him instead. There is nothing wrong with that question if you have the sack to ask it on your own, but Oliver not only did not, he seemed incredulous as how Richt could call him out for pulling such a stunt during a post SEC Championship game Press Conference. Let me say this as succinctly as possible: I want a coach who wins the game-not one that wins the press conference.

Seriously, why does Richt and Georgia have a problem winning the big game? How many top ten teams has he lost to now? 10…?

Coach Richt totally Alinsky’ed C-Fat on that encounter: isolate the target; freeze the target

Humiliate the target…was funny listening to 680 this morning scrupulously avoiding discussion of C-Fat’s rout….

If you listen this afternoon or anytime this week, C-Fat wins!
