No, no, you don’t need to come in. We can just discuss this on the phone.

I wonder what they talked about.

UPDATE:  Whatever it was, it doesn’t matter.  Auburn’s made its decision.

Auburn is expected to name Gus Malzahn its new head football coach today, according to multiple sources. The move will reunite the man with a playbook full of offensive wizardry with the university where he served as offensive coordinator just a season ago.

Malzahn and the Auburn search committee are expected in Auburn tonight.

Bet Kiehl Frazier is a happy camper tonight.

If AU hires Kirby, do you think he calls his good friend Bobo to be his O.C.?

He may call, but i think that would be career suicide for Bobo.

I want Kirby to be successful as long as it is not at the expense of UGA but i think the plains would be a bad move for him. I think the auburn job is pretty unattractive right now.

If Kirby continues to bide his time he can end up with a better program with a better chance of early success as opposed to the train wreck that Auburn represents right now.

I’m sure he will. I am also sure Bobo will stay put in Athens unless he gets a legit HBC gig.

Exactly. Lateral move. The family is comfortable in Athens. The situation in Auburn is anything but stable. If Bobo wants to be an offensive coordinator, he already is. If he wants to be a head coach, he’s in the place where he can make his chance.

Not only that but considering the instability of Auburn, can’t see Bobo taking that risk. Auburn has now fired two coaches that led them to undefeated seasons within two years of doing so.

Calling that a lateral move is an insult to lateral moves.

I think he would prefer to stay at UGA and take over for Richt, but I would not be real happy about that. I like Bobo as an OC, and a developer of QBs but I am not sure he has the stature for the HC position at a program like UGA. I could be wrong, it is just my impression, but I would prefer him go to test himself as a HC elsewhere first.

We got damned lucky taking a coordinator from FSU in as our HC in 2001, someone with no experience sitting at the big desk. Don’t want to try that again, we would certainly be going against the odds to win that risky bet two times in a row (even for a guy that is coming from in-house.) I think a mid-major job is more what I see Bobo doing, let’s face it, the doors haven’t been beaten down for him with all the coaching changes the past few years.

Query: If Auburn hires Malzahn would Arky State be a good fit at HC for Bobo under your analysis? Arky State is a mid-major whose program is a winner and is in good shape right now.

Yeah, Mac, but we don’t have any idea who is interested and planning. Not making a show of it is part of the game (hence the title of Blutarsky’s post) especially since everyone’s just getting on board with this entire staff and better football minds than ours see a helluva lot more than we pretend we do. Even some of our asst coaches could be targeted right now. How much we anty up to keep Bobo and Richt is uppermost in my mind. I don’t think that Richt is going to tolerate anymore embarrassing disloyalty to him, his family and his coaches and their families. I hope the AD and Regents learn how stupid they have been what with giving a D coach a 90k raise and two coaches higher are left high and dry. Hell, Chithead made 40% more.

We are Georgia, not Pusillanimous U.

I’m hoping this crew’s stability(now) will rub off on a recruit or two. We can use that going forward. Friend and Lakatos have just started and we are now approaching Tereshinski’s 3rd year of hardass summer training. I don’t want nothin’ to happen to nobody.

By the way, can you name any other asst or head coach with the experience of Richt in NCs and coaching Heisman players before becoming a head coach? Hell, he was at FSU for 15 years. How much seasoning were you looking for? His credentials were and are head and shoulders above all others at that time and now he is the tenured coach in the SEC. That ain’t no accident.

Did you just experience one of my brain farts?

No, and I thought Richt was a good hire at the time, had no complaints. But as I have watched the escalating number of coaching changes over the past decade, I have come to this feeling on my own. I am not saying there is any magic formula, we are dealing with different human beings and environments that creat situations similar to fingerprints, no two are exactly right. Just my opinion.

Mayor, not saying which school but yes, that is what I think. I also think a South Florida, East Carolina, Middle TN, etc., would be examples if they were opened.

South Florida is a sleeping giant IMHO. They are in one of the most desirable areas of Florida, play in an outstanding stadium and are in a talent rich environment for recruiting purposes. There are so many good players in the state of Florida all of them can’t possibly be signed by FU, FSU or Miami. South Florida ought to be no worse than 4th in the pecking order in-state. Plus, they play in a conference that they should dominate given the forgoing. SOH (Son of Holtz) really screwed up not being able to win there.

That would do away with one of their biggest claims. How many times have they claimed ” if Bobo is so good, why doesn’t he ever get interviewed elsewhere?”. I can’t see him going there either, lateral move at the VERY BEST.

I actually heard some of the folks on the radio Monday morning saying that Bobo had to go. In the 12 game regular season, Bama averaged giving up 9.25 points per game. We scored 28 on them. That’s over 300% of their season average. I guess we should have scored 50. That’s what good offenses do. They put up Madden numbers on the best defense in the country.

Granted, one of our scores was a special teams play. But that still leaves 21 points credited to the offense.

Me too, Senator, except I don’t want to mess with Bobo’s mind. After you have pulled so much of your hair out (I have a view of that right now) training him, it would be a tragedy to not see him here. Hell, he may donate some hair for you to glue back on your pointy head. 🙂

By the way, I’m sure many have asked; any relationship to the candy magnate?

The call to petrino may have been to see if he was available as an oc for kirby. I think the auburn job may be a good fit for kirby simply because of his ability to recruit south georgia. When auburn was good, thats where they got the players.

I know a lot of people won’t like it, but my guess is that Mike Bobo will be the next head coach at Georgia.

If Bobo is the next HC of UGA, I hope it’s because he’s taken a HC job elsewhere and proved his chops. I don’t want to promote from within whenever Richt calls it quits.

I think he deserves a shot at it. I like the continuity of it. I also know that bobo has done a good job recruiting especially at the qb position which is essential. As far as HC exp., neither of the two best coaches we’ve had in 50 years came with any.

You gotta admit, it’s a novel idea. I would see it as an immediate threat to us. Besides, we’ve been training yearly with our established Scout Team at Tech. That might get us better aligned to take on Malzahn, otherwise we could be playing against Pro Set and Power Is from Kirby and Petrino.

Whether he is a HC or asst, I think Bobby would welcome any type of chance before the water gets cold.

Here is a candidate who has on his resume under “reason for leaving last job” the following: violated several laws in the hiring process of his mistress, used company money to be a sugar daddy, and lied to his boss. Only in college football is this not a big deal.

I like how succinctly the article sums up Petrino’s last stop at UA – “fired for hiring the woman he was having an affair with”.

Somehow, I think Auburn deserves him.

You bunch of insensitive aholes. Talking up to attack new coaches for the SEC while there is yet another school, silent and leaderless, hobbling slowly around the snow-covered corner on orange crutches, unable yet to look up and believe in Santa again. All that new jargantic athletic facility just sitting there with no new recruits to impress….its such a waste.
