Putting the band back together

Except this time it’ll be John Jancek directing traffic.

Hmm… I wonder what Jon Fabris is up to these days.  The Vols could always use a challenge.

This is great news, urnge fans have only thought they knew pain, you give Jancek and Willy a defense already in disarray and it could get real ugly.

Did Jancek even recruit? We know Willie likes DB’s shorter than himself and Jancek wouldn’t know a LB if Dick Butkus was on his team.

Yeah, he recruited. He just recruited the wrong guys.

I’m not sure the guys Jancek recruited were bad, they just weren’t developed at all after high school.

Here is all you need to know about Jancek and his evaluating talent. He offered Chase Vasser and Dexter Moody first over Jarvis Jones, but he did offer Jones much later. On his in home with Jarvis Jones he fell asleep. He is the reason Jarvis went to USC.

Kevin Minter begged for a UGA offer that same year, but Jancek thought he was not good enough so we took Mike Gilliard, Vasser, and Moody. LSU should send Jancek a thank you card… 😉

You seem to have a lot of knowledge of the inner workings of Georgia Football or at least hearsay of it, I just go on observation. I will say this though, good coaches often appear to get good players whereas bad coaches often appear to get bad players, I think Jancek was more of a bad coach than all of the players that came through during his time who were ranked a four star recruits all just turned out to be duds. There are some guys that are going to excel no matter who coaches them Randall Godfrey the lone stand out player on many of Goff’s teams defense, Rennie Curran had some of that kind of talent, its a shame Grantham didn’t get 4 years with him.

UT continues down the long road to oblivion. 3 more years of mediocrity and the place will be totally irrelevant, perhaps for all time.Teenage kids don’t remember back more than a few years and UT has only had 1 winning season in the last 5 and that one was 7-6. When the new coach falls on his face and is fired in 3 years UT will have become UK but with orange jerseys.

And you are right, they may stay that way, all they have is reputation and history, they don’t have the natural advantages of in state talent they MUST have the reputation to recruit on. If they stay down another 3 years it will take an incredible coach to pull them out and it’ll have to be a Beamer-Virginia Tech type reclamation job.

Ahhhh, how revisionist history can shine forth. The “reclamation job” that Beamer is credited with is a reclamation of his own early ineptitude. Dooley’s last 4 years at VT, they won 9,8,6,and 9 games. Won the Peach Bowl to finish 9-2-1 and in the top 20.

To listen to some, they were on a 30 game losing streak when Beamer took over an impossible situation.

Tennessee will always be just one great coach and a couple of years away from competing in the SEC East. I don’t know that Butch Jones is the guy, and I definitely don’t think Jancek and Willie are the guys to help. With that said, though, even with the disadvantage of a talent-weak state, UT has too much going for it to be lost in the wilderness forever. Hell, they weren’t that far away under Dooley. He couldn’t get a break, and trusted too many of the wrong players.

Back to back 1-7 SEC seasons doesn’t sound like SOD was getting close. Not getting a break and trusting the wrong players doesn’t get you a pass. Isn’t it more indicative of SOD’s skill sets. Young Dooley just wasn’t a head coach. UT was desperate to save a recruiting class and Dooley was on Hamilton’s contact list. Was he available? He did have a famous dad and coached under Nicky. Vandy is now a UT rival and I don’t think they go gently into the night. Butch has promised to bring the best coaching staff to Knoxvegas that has ever been assembled in the SEC. Lot of these winners were fired from other SEC programs.

If you look at the long history of college football you will see several teams that were at the pinnacle that fell to the depths and have never recovered. Minnesota is one that comes to mind. Army is another. Here’s hoping UT is the next.

To everyone who said Richt waited too long to fire WM….

Well, look at this, he will now have gone to 2 rivals that will be ownt due to crappy Ds and will be brought down due to crappy Ds. Funny how stuff works out.

Not to mention he served a stint at Oklahoma. Our defense struggled during Willie’s time at DC in Athens but he was responsible for the secondary and Richt almost named in co-DC along Van Gorder. He then gets jobs with OU, Auburn, and TN the guy has more going for him than we know. Everyone knows he is a nice guy but he has to be better than UGA fans acknowledge. Stoops was a DC at Florida before taking over with the Sooners, he had to be impressed with Willie’s body of work to bring him in.

I am not arguing to bring him back, nor defending our defensive record during his tenure, but he simply cannot be as bad as many think. I do remember the falloff at LB during Jancek’s time in Athens, some could be due to personnel, but it seemed to be more. Either way, the UT fans are already lukewarm about Jones’ hire, he had better make sure the staff he assembles can bring it. Recruiting contacts and skills have to be a prime consideration for the people he brings in as well.

Part of that business began with arguments on UGA sidelines and missed communications between coaches and also coach/players. I’m with you, Mac, in that there has to be some talent there, but it will take at least 2 yrs before anyone can evaluate at UT. No matter, the critics will be eating him up before Spring Practice is over and most of them will be UGA fans who can’t judge coaches in the first place.

Gee, wonder why Buck Belue hasn’t been sought out for any of these coaching jobs? He was usually at the head of the mob trying to get rid of UGA coaches, including Richt and Bobo.

  13. I thought they were going to load up on assistants, then they get Jancek and WillieMart? The Loonies of Urnge Nation will be positively apoplectic after this.

Too, I can’t believe they are going back to the 4-3 after the one year in the 3-4. Butch may have been wise to keep Sunseri and stick with the 3-4 (assuming he wanted to stay) instead of switching schemes again.

Human nature being as it is, its often difficult for everyone involved when a peer is promoted to management and leadership. I have no knowledge of discontent in the defensive coaching offices but one can imagine there being some when Martinez was promoted.

There’s a reason these coaches continue to find work.

I used to laugh, or cry, when I watched our defense play what I called Martinez’, “zone tackling”.

“You have a zone and you stay in your zone. If the ball carrier enters your zone, then tackle him. Otherwise, stay in your zone!”

“Oh, and if the ball carrier is near the sideline, simply recommend for him to step out of bounds. You may use a hand or shoulder if you wish”.

Butch is trying to find Asst coaches with SEC conections for recuiting. He has to get UT back in the national recuiting picture ASAP. Georgia has got too many teams milking the talent here for UT to get back to power. Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, Florida all get the cream then Kentucky and Vandy pick up the remainder. UT will have real problems unless Jones can get the big uglies from Ohio and Penn to create a massive Oline.
