There are more than a few programs where you’d never hear anything like this in public. Or this, for that matter. I don’t know whether that’s a feature or a bug, but as a blogger, it certainly provides more grist for the mill.
I’m not offering advice here (or at least not advice that anybody’s going to listen to), but I’d have to say that if Ken Malcome thinks he’s going to take serious time away from Todd Gurley, he’s kidding himself.
On the other hand, if we got this kind of season (a team-leading 40 catches for 572 yards and four touchdowns) from a “rusty” Malcolm Mitchell, I think the coaching staff – Grantham, in particular – ought to pay attention to what he’s saying.
He said he still was “rusty” at receiver even by the Oct. 20 game against Kentucky when he had a career-high nine catches for 103 yards.
“I was out there making plays actually not having the technique down that I needed,” he said. “The way practices are set up, you really can’t gain that during the season. It’s the offseason that allows you to do those type of stuff. Those cuts I was making, they were good enough to catch the ball, but were they good enough to break for a 50-yard gain after that? That just comes with the offseason and I didn’t have the offseason at receiver.”

Especially with King gone, we’ll need Mitchell for the deep threat. I think they keep him at WR for awhile.
I hope Boo gets a shot somewhere in the pros.

Think we can all empathize with Boo in his situation, it isn’t like he is a no-talent player whining because he never sees the field. He is a player that could start at 80% of the schools in D1, and would cretainly play a larger role at all but a handful. He is dependable, and when called on, comes in and delivers. I agree with him, I felt he should have been used more often, especially when we needed more power running between the tackles (like on our own goal line againsr TN) and especially when we are in a pass-only situation and need our best pass blocker to give Murray more time (who wouldn’t have rather seen him, or RSIV, on our last drive against Alabama? I am betting Boo will catch on with someone in the NFL, scouts do not care where you play, or how much, the NFL is full of players who never played against top quality competition a single play….Boo has some tape to show.

Yeah, someone needs to sit Boo down and remind him of the story of Danny Ware. He has had a pretty solid NFL career for a guy that wasn’t really our primary option in college. I sympathize with wanting more playing time but if he doesn’t realize that both components of “Gurshall” are more talented than he is, at least in the rushing part of their jobs, then I think he’s the only one. That doesn’t mean that Boo isn’t talented and it doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a shot at a career in the pros. If I was him, though, I’d start to be a little more concerned about my rep. He’s already quit the team once. Now he’s being quoted as being somewhat malcontented with his role on a team that won 11 games. The NFL guys are going to look at that. Bottom line, we need Malcome to keep his head in the game and be ready when called upon. At some point, Gurshalls’ going to get banged up. Or we’ll need Malcome to pass block or we’ll just simply need him. If I were him, I’d work as hard as I could to get the starting job back. That way, even if he can’t get it away from Gurshall, he’ll be ready when Georgia needs him, and thus prove himself to the pros.

Collectively, you and Mac said it all. We all like Boo and cheer for him, but it’s up to him to get back on the field by reaching for everything in his gut. The coaches see everyone in practice and during the games and his bitch isn’t so much bitching as it is “Put me in there!, Coach, Put me in there! It is encouraging to see him not pissing and moaning, but rather he’s just eager to get into the game. Writers will write it such that they make that desire sound like bitchin’ and grist for the mill.
Someone should point out a UGA player who played behind Hearst and didn’t get much time except as MVP in a Super Bowl. Wonder if he is aware of that little UGA historical tidbit?

I dont care what the CB situation is next year. MM is our best receiver and needs to play there full time. Although I like our other receivers, MM is the only one that would scare scare me if i were an opposing DC.

I would offer this explanation to CTG: MM on offense is our top outside scoring threat. We build leads because he puts points on the board – and that takes pressure off your D. If the objective is winning, then this team wants MM at WR in 2013 – for what may be his last year at UGA.

Here’s an idea for Greg McGarity – no drug testing for 4 weeks after spring break. You know how corners like to eat brownies while on spring break. Keep Malcolm available for da bomb.

I get your point but better brush up on drug testing, MJ does not clear out of your system in four weeks. I really don’t know why this rule isn’t level for all schools (some don’t test at all for it, and others excuse it in certain situations, or have more lax punishments for it.) Pot is now legal in 2 states, available as a prescription drug in many others, and treated similar to a parking ticket in some; time for the schools/NCAA to find another way to treat positive reactions for marijuana. We have much more serious issues to deal with.

Oops! Forgot. It will take longer to clear detection of mj according to the fat one has. These players can clear it in two weeks since they have low bodyfat for storage,i.e., Dallas Lee may take a while longer than MM.

Unless you’re smoking like Cheech & Chong on a daily basis, MJ will most definitely clear out of your system in less than four weeks. And because THC is fat soluble, the time it takes to clear the system is highly dependent on body fat % and metabolism of the individual. The “4 weeks” timeline is highly inaccurate for most people (particularly for college athletes).

There is no logic to moving MM back to defense. If UGA keeps doing that shuffle they will remain paper thin forever. At some point other players have to develop by finding them snaps in games. With the other losses on defense MM won’t be a savior there anyway.

It seems like there were some games, especially the more physical ones like UF and bama, where Marshall was a non-factor. It seems to me that Malcolme could be used to spell Gurley in those types of games rather than having a new identity on those series when Gurley is out. He may not be a home run hitter like Marshall but he does seem to be physical.

I don’t fault Bobo for using Marshall as a 2nd RB because he has a different style with explosiveness to make defenses pay close attention, but I do feel we under used Boo this season. Situationally, he would have been the better option. Given Malcombe’s own comments about the “total team” approach amongst the running backs, I feel Gurshall would have understood that. Missed opportunity at various times, but having him as the #3 back in terms of plays run was probably the right decision.

I know this isn’t going to be popular but if I were Malcolme’s father I would advise him to transfer. He’s got 2 seasons of eligibility left and he would be a starter elsewhere. He’s going to be 3rd team as long as he stays at Georgia. UGA will undoubtedly sign some new guys who can spell Gurley and Marshall, too, and those guys will need to get touches as well. The problem with transferring is that as a practical matter he will have to go to a D-IAA or D-II school, though.

Like the thinking aimed at the player’s career; however, think he can stay in a UGA uniform and not get hurt career-wise. As pointed out, he will have plenty of film, especially from an FU game and a few others showing how strong he can run when the going gets tough. The NFL scouts don’t measure him by the # of yards like CFB pundits do; Instead they look at his capabilities that they can work with. If I didn’t think he would do fine by staying, then I would suggest what you have suggested.

Think we hear him ramping up for the bowl game. Guess he and Murray will demonstrate what “cornholing” means in the South. If he ups his breakaways, what will our friends in the swamp think since he broke away for the winning TD on them this year? If he’s practicing to get better than that, God help the lizards.

It never made sense to play Mitchell at DB. He’s much more of a threat on offense. Even though we were thin, I thought moving him to secondary never made sense.

Plus, instead of having an All-SEC caliber receiver you end up with just a decent CB and a decent receiver. That whole thing was a direct result of Mike Adams’ meddling and UGA adopting an asinine one-size-fits-all policy about player discipline which was the real cause of the problems on D in the first half of the season. Some on this blog have been talking about the difference in commitment to the football programs between the UGA Administration and the Bama Administration. This is one example right here–and it directly translates onto the field.
