Like the swallows returning to Capistrano…

Hello, offseason rumor.  Haven’t heard from you in a couple of years.  How you been?

They already have a defensive coordinator… what could they possibly offer him that wouldn’t be a lateral move? Rodney has passed the opportunity to take a lateral move out of Athens several times before. I’m sure he’ll appreciate the raise that this gets him, though. I personally hope we’ll do whatever it takes to keep him on board.

Other rumor is Auburn is waiting on Tracy Rocker to return when Titans’ season ends. Will they have 2 DLine coaches?

Clearly, he’s a hell of a recruiter. But from my view way outside the arena, I’m just not so sure how good he is at coaching D-line. The team has had some bonafide stars on D-line for the last 10-12 years, but they’ve never seemed to be as amazing as they look once they get to the NFL.

I may be wrong, because I’ll be the first to admit I know nothing about D-line play. And I don’t know how he interacts within the defensive coordinator’s schemes and plans, whether it’s been Grantham, Willie, Pornstache or whoever.

Has any position coach in the history of UGA football done as little with as much talent as RG? I say no. The NFL is full of our DLineman who while at UGA were just potentially great, It took the Pros to make them great.

That is what happens in the pros. College coaches do what they can under the restrictions that college athletics place upon them. Pro coaches have fewer restrictions and thus can make their players go from good to great more often than not.

This is such a tired meme. Garner is a victim of his own success. Maybe he can recruit some 2 stars for you guys and ‘coach them up’ to prove a point?

I’d rather he just keep recruiting and coaching because he’s done a darn good job of it.

Rodney is welcome. He is welcome to stay and he is welcome to go.

After having been usurped by Bobo for the last few years, it looks like Garner has resumed his rightful place as the most polarizing of Richt’s assistants.

If you had to rank each member of our coaching staff, titles aside, on their recruiting ability, where would we put CRG? I think at this point you have to put him behind Richt, Bobo, Grantham, McLendon, and Lilly. So, imo, he’s not in the top half. Friend might come ahead of him as well.

    • No offense, but you’re off on this. You think other schools would keep chasing RG if he couldn’t recruit?

None taken. I’m interested in your thoughts, though. Who on that list would you put behind Garner? I don’t believe I’m the only one with this perception.

And I’m not suggesting CRG can’t recruit (when compared to the coaching population in general). What I am suggesting is that I view, from my office window, that CRG has been passed by these very talented up and comers.

Further thought. I would guess that CRG’s relationships in Atlanta might be more valuable at a place like Auburn right now than they are to UGA. I don’t think he’s the only member of our staff who could waltz right in to SW DeKalb High, for example.

Short memories around here. Anyone that doesn’t remember losing guys like Jamal Lewis, Cosey Coleman, and Deon Grant needs to hang up and listen.

It’s not so much a short memory as it is the fact that I was in high school before CRG got to UGA. I’m happy to be schooled by my elders, but no one appears willing to take on the specific question I asked.

I’m interested in the answer as well. Why don’t we assess his standing as a recruiter among other coaches at UGA?

We don’t have to rank them. Richt does by giving Garner the title of Assistant Head Coach and de facto Director of Recruiting. You can’t just throw ‘titles’ aside. There is an order of command for a reason.

Now getting to your pre-supposition that somehow Garner only remains on staff not because of the job he is doing but because he is grandfathered in….it’s poppycock. Garner can flat recruit. He’s been doing it for years. That’s why he’s in charge and the others aren’t. Do I think some of the other coaches could do the job? Maybe….but I know Garner does it and does it well…So I’ll keep him ahead of all of those other guys, thanks.

Hmm….I don’t see Lilly walking into there. He does great in Tampa though. Grantham and Bobo are already coordinating. So I guess that leaves McClendon as recruiting coordinator. And to be fair, it’s not as if his charges have all lived up to expectations either on or off the field (King, Ealey, Jackson, Crowell).

I think you have to say RG is an asset in the recruiting area, he has long term ties with the HS coaches and UGA has been very fair in honoring commitments and standing by them until there is just no way to save the few who will not play by the rules. His contacts alone make him attractive to programs who recruit the southeast. The stability and faithfulness to the commitments is more due to CMR, but RG is popular with the UGA players and has contributed to the “family atmosphere so many refer to. The questions about development of DL players once they leave is fair game to me.

They are fair game, but they aren’t equally applied.

Let’s get into the actual track record here…I seem to remember a guy that came in as a two star fullback and ended up being a three time all american playing on one of Garner’s lines. Was he coaching the D-Line at that point?

UGA has had 9 D-linemen drafted over the last 6 drafts. That’s pretty spectacular. You’ve got to assume at least 2 from this year’s line (and it becomes harder to judge with the move to the 3-4). Same period of time Bama has 6 guys drafted as D-Linemen…and that includes a guy like Mark Anderson who was a 4th round pick and has gone on to have double digit sacks in two seasons.

I mean, it is so stupid “On the other hand, most of CRG’s players do seem to perform considerably better once they enter the nfl.” What does that even mean? So Geno Atkins makes the pro bowl and that’s a negative on CCG? The guy was All SEC as a sophomore…had a very productive JR year in 2008 despite getting doubled every game. Comes back for his senior year to get his degree despite being pegged a potential 1-3rd round pick and watches his draft stock slip with the rest of the team to the 4th round….and then goes bananas on the NFL proving that they messed up. How did Garner do a bad job there? The kid was productive his whole career, came back for his senior season, and clearly was ready to play at the next level. Should he have gone into the draft room of one of those teams and secretly picked Geno earlier so he wouldn’t ‘perform considerably better’ than his draft slot? Next thing I’m going to hear is that it’s Garner’s fault Charles Johnson left early.

Look…do I know if Garner is the best DL coach in america? No. That’s subjective and I wouldn’t have any clue where to start. What I do know is that the man unequivocally recruits talent to UGA and puts D-Linemen in the NFL consistently as well as any other program in America. I could care less if there are some who ‘underperform’ their college production and some that ‘overperform’…whatever that means.

I like and agree with most of your post, but RG’s recruiting importance may now be run of the mill- I don’t know. Why shouldn’t other coaches now be more important in that area? I don’t keep up that closely with individual recruiting efforts nor results (used to but now don’t have access to that info as before), but sure would like to hear from those who do keep up with it.

I guess we’ll find out. I assume most of the commenting will move to the updated post…but thought it was worth following up. I liked Coach Garner and thought he did a heck of a job. He deserves a lot of credit for 15 years of service.

Now it’ll be interesting to see who the new hire is…my feeling is that Grantham will be fired up about it. You get the feeling not that they didn’t get along, but that CTG would love the opportunity to hire his own man into the position…Garner leaving on his own accord allows CTG to make the hire without the mess.

Don’t see Garner going to Auburn. I am surprised that a “historically black” college hasnt hired him for the recruiting job he can do. BTW, does anyone know how those jobs are filled. I can’t name a single coach at any “hb” school.

Don’t know what to think about CRG. On one hand I’d say most of his DT recruits have been able to play and produce. Compare that to OL recruits where we get maybe 1 serviceable player for every 3 or 4 (or more) recruits. On the other hand, most of CRG’s players do seem to perform considerably better once they enter the nfl. I think it’s better to keep CRG than to have him on an opposing team. Off hand, I don’t know who could do a better job.

There was a time when I thought that we really, really <i<needed CRG to be recruiting coordinator. I am not sure that is true anymore if it ever was, but I hope he either stays or gets a HC job somewhere.

He does recruit well. The JUCO player we are recruiting said Garner is who he has the relationship with in response to a question about rumors of Garner to Auburn.

Might explain why he is going after the Juco players signed. Richt might have stipulated that to be made public at this time to prevent “personality raiding”.

He’s apparently gone now. Jay Jacobs just tweeted that he’s coming home. Thanks for your years at UGA CRG. I’ve appreciated it.

But Auburn sucks. And I hope you lose every game you coach there. Unless you’re playing Tech. You can beat Tech.
