If you can stomach it, here’s an article looking at the last play of the SECCG from the Alabama perspective. The “oh, what might have been” part of the deal may not be quite what you expected.
The biggest defensive play of Alabama’s season also contained a freshman mistake, as cornerback Geno Smith was supposed to be blitzing along with Mosley.
“I will always wonder that if Geno had blitzed, he probably would have batted the ball down to the ground,” Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart said. “Then there would have been another snap. The fact he didn’t come and bat it down and they caught the ball is a little bit of fate there.”
Interestingly, no comment about the decision not to spike being a mistake.

There is no need to comment on clocking the ball Katherine (Senator) because everyone knows your husband screwed the pooch on that call. Interesting that the only person that Richt can get to take his side on this is dead (Homer Smith). But the co-author of that book with Homer Smith is alive and he says of course you clock it in that scenario. So actually two people support Richt on this: a dead guy and you.

I came down initially on the side favoring spiking the ball and still believe that would have been the better thing to do. However, I have come to realize that not spiking it was just a choice within the realm of possible choices and is supportable in that situation. On top of that, the coaches only had seconds to decide. Not spiking could have worked. The Bama D was on their heels. The Bama LB made a great play and we had bad luck when the ball was caught in the field of play and time ran out. Like it or not luck plays a big part in who wins in football and all sports. The team had a great year, won the SEC East and came within 5 yards of winning the SEC Championship, plus playing for the national title. Everybody needs to get over it and move on.

We run the same play whether we spike it or not. The bad luck of it was that 95% of the time the ball falls harmlessly to the ground. I’m content with the decision.

Actually, Murray was quoted as saying the 1st read on the play was to the left side of the end-zone, so I don’t think we can jump to that conclusion.

Yes, the 1st read was to Tavarres on the left (but he and Mitchell are running the same routes just on opposite sides). Sure there are other pass plays (a TE drag, P44 Haynes) but I’m not sure why with extra time they call a different play if this was the one they thought was the game winner to begin with.
Mark Richt on spiking the ball: “Well, spiking the ball takes time. We had plenty of time to call play, so we called the play and we were taking ‑‑ the goal was to take a shot at their back right end of the end zone and the ball got batted, the ball got tipped and it landed to a receiver that was running a speed out.”
And more: “We had the play we wanted. We had a good play. The ball got tipped at the line of scrimmage and it fell in the arms of a guy in play. The ball was going to the back end of the end zone, either a catch or out of the end zone. Because if you have, I don’t know how many seconds there were, 15 or whatever it was, if you spike the ball, you might only have two plays after that. If you throw the ball in the end zone, you probably get three plays out of it. So once you spike it, it does take a little time to spike it, and you reduce the chance of having the third play, basically. So the goal was to throw it in the end zone. That’s what Murray was attempting to do. Once again, the ball got batted, and landed in the arms of our guy in play.”

Give me a break. Everybody knows that if you’ve called a play with 15 seconds left, you should first run a play to kill the clock, and then run the play that you already called. I mean, duh!!!

I’m torn here. I really like Schaub. I’ve followed him since the Falcons dumped him to have more dough for that little Va. Tech criminal. He had enough PT with the Falcons that I knew he had great potential. Had they kept him, they wouldn’t need to use the 1st pick for Ryan (not to dis him, mind you).

Personally, a call for a TD or Out of Bounds is a play to clock it with a % chance of a TD. I liked the call.

Clocking it is basically calling a 30 second time-out. Who does that help in this situation? Alabama.
Sometimes you beat yourself, and sometimes you just get beat. On that play, Alabama’s LB timed his jump into the passing lane instead of continuing at the QB. Sensational play on his part — showed smarts and athleticism. Let it go.
