I had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn’t April 1st.
You may remember Roof from such hits as Georgia 45, Auburn 7.
Mark Bradley’s column ought to be a hoot.

Ted Roof named Georgia Tech's DC. “He’s one of the most respected football coaches in the nation," Paul Johnson said.

“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23
Wait, what?
Damnit, Tech. This confirms that you’re not even trying.

At this point, I think Johnson just wants out of Tech but doesn’t want to quit. So he’s trying to do everything he can to get fired. It’s a genius plan, after all.

If he quits he has to pay them. If he’s fired they have to pay him. It’s starting to all make sense now.

So at some point in the next 10 months he’s going to wipe wing sauce on a Joe Hamilton jersey, then drive around the parking lot of the school president’s office with the 2012 ACC Coastal Co-Champs cardboard sign telling them how he doesn’t care about their macho head games?

Look at what Roof did with those athletes over at Auburn. Just THINK about what he can do with Tech talent!

Exactly. Plus, based on Groh’s comments (and Fish Fry’s as well), the 3-4 was just too durn complicated for all those geniuses off North Ave. to understand.
So Roof gets players with the football IQ of Aubbies, and the natural talent of…NATS.
It’s been over 10 years since we laid 50+ on them. Here’s hoping that’s rectified this November.

The best part though is the AJC article that mentions the 2010 Auburn defense, but conveniently leaves out the 2011 stats. Wait, no, the best part is all the Techies commenting on what a great hire this is. Wait, no, crap I can’t stop laughing long enough to decide the best part…

Ah yes, the 2010 Auburn defense. National ranks:
PPG: 53rd
Run: 9th
Pass: 108th
Total Defense: 60th
Truly, the gold standard of defense. The amazing thing is that his defenses were considerably worse the other two years.

Hinton does a review of this each year after the season. That 2010 Auburn defense was unequivocally the worst defense (by no close measure) to win a title during the BCS era. $200k really went a long way on the Plains that year.

Well hell, I personally think Roof is a pretty good coach. I mean Van Gorder couldn’t do anymore (even worse) at Auburn. Then before that Roof was at Duke. I mean, come on – so he returns to Moma on the flats. Ok – who remembers the “Black Watch” and DJS running for his life.?
All that said – Ted Roof and Andy McCollum are good coaches – the problem is that the recruiting has fallen so low – just don’t know if it can be turned around. Then again – old Fish Fry Genuis may just want to get a couple year bump and ride out the string. After all – he just pasted a heartless USCw and the lame kittens in a bowl.

as off coordinator at fsu, coach richt played tech in 99 and 2000 also.

Don’t forget Roof was the D-coordinator at Tech in ’99 as well, when we dropped a 48-spot on them (that should’ve been a 51- or even a 55-).

Unless Ted can convince his head coach to hire a decent offensive guy to develop a unit capable of simulating a full speed passing game, their defense will continue to under perform.

Roof’s defense actually performed fairly decently in the Big 10 this year. Fourth in yards allowed and second in scoring. I’m not sure how that will translate when he steps up in leagues to the ACC, though.

And Nebraska’s defense parlayed playing Big 10 “offenses” into leading the nation in passing D. How’d that work out?

Like I said, I’m not sure how that works out when he steps up to the ACC. 🙂

Probably just fine against everybody not named Clemson and maybe Miami in that conference. Not exactly a bastion of offensive excellence circulating through the ACC these days.

At least one NC school per season has a decent offense.

Penn State had a good defense last year so the best that can be said is he didn’t screw it up. Of course, given the dumpster fire that Penn State was coming to this season, I guess that IS a decent job.

I don’t get it. The interim DC at Tech, Charles Kelly, did a demonstrably better job than Groh. Why hire Roof? I understand Kelly is leaving Tech and going to FSU–as what? DC? A position coach? Was Kelly runnoft? Roof is a proven loser and Kelly had Tech’s D playing pretty well against the Lamer. Looks like a rudderless ship on the flats.
LikeLike
Unfortunately for Kelly, his throttling of Lane (otherwise a sufficient audition for the Tech DC job) could not overcome the awesome “unprofessional, divisive and negative” bag of taint that Groh left on CPJ’s doorstep
LikeLike
FSU hired the DB coach from Bama as the DC (or maybe co-DC). He’s a really good recruiter, but unproven as a DC.
I’m not trying to defend Roof – his record speaks for itself. But I do think it’s interesting that he did a credible job at PSU this year compared to the train wreck that was his defense at Auburn.
