A brief primer on the other story from the title game, in the form of five questions:
- Was Katherine Webb’s presence at the title game noteworthy? As an Auburn student rooting for her Alabama quarterback boyfriend, sure.
- Was there anything wrong with commenting on Webb’s appearance? She’s a former Miss Alabama. It’s kind of hard not to notice. Herbstreit’s “A J’s doing some things right” comment struck the correct, brief and witty tone about that.
- Was Musburger’s commentary too pervy? Put it this way: spoken while knocking back a couple of cold ones with the guys in private, nobody cares. It’s just typical horndog talk. But coming from a 70-something dispensing love advice to the teenaged forlorn during a football broadcast heard by millions, yeah, it was cringeworthy.
- Given ESPN’s firing of Ron Franklin for a couple of sexist comments, was the network a bit hypocritical issuing this lame-ass apology for Musburger’s comments? Do I really even need to answer that question?
- Was this inevitable? Sadly, yes.

This is really a controversy? Musberger’s 128 years old; he commented on an undeniably beautiful woman. WHO THE FUCK CARES? We’ve become so mind numbingly politically correct that an old man can’t harmelessly comment on a beauty queen during a blow out football game. Was the girl offended? No? My problem was not that you mentioned Limbaugh (or ‘dragged him into it’, as I so artfully stated). My problem was that, through your link and your “shoot me” comment, you suggested that Limbaugh should be disqualified from mentioning it because he got caught with a bottle of Viagra pills at an airport several years ago. I disagree with that. As another poster said earlier, we get it. You don’t like Limbaugh. There are many other more applicable ways you could go after him without getting an argument from me, but he has a point on this one.

Which incident is all over the news? Griffin’s actions have barely warranted a chirp out of the media, while everyone is painting Musberger as some dirty old man.

My wife is a successful professional in a very male dominated field. She thought Musburger was silly and bordered on unprofessional. She felt he embarrassed himself and his wife. However, she was not as understanding about the Ms Grffin “pawing” of Anderson Cooper at all.
As for myself Musburger should just know better at this point in his career and at this point in his life.

My point is comparing Musberger’s comments to Griffin’s faux fellatio is like comparing a fender bender to a 3 car pile up; Musberger meant no harm in what he said, while Griffin engaged in a tacky attention whoring act on live television for the sole purpose of shocking people. Yet it’s Musberger that is getting grief over it, while Griffin gets a general pass. Personally, I think that Musberger simply forgot the stage he was on. College football, especially in the SEC, is a pageant with defined roles. Musberger simply said one of the Things You Can’t Say as an older gentleman with a microphone looking at a young Southern lady. Stupid perhaps, but if you want to be college football’s public personality you get to deal with these things. Herbie, on the other hand, knows how to keep the young ‘uns buttering his … bread(?) for years to come.

How does a Musburger – a 40 year veteran of tv broadcasting, someone who has broadcast the top events at nearly every level of professional and amateur sports – simply forget what stage he was on? No Musburger was fully aware what stage he was on and he did it anyway because he thinks that he is bigger than the event and beyond reproach.

Did anyone see the bit about the company that had the road name where they are building changed from “Morning Glory Road” because of a sexual connotation? Ask yourself this: What if, say, Samantha Steele[-Ponder] had been down there on the sideline gushing over how hot AJ McCarron was? Or how nice Manti Te’o’s glutes looked? How soon do you think it’d be before we saw another female reporting from the sideline — you think it’d happen in the next 10 years?

I have heard numerous female reporters/pundits/tv personalities comment positively on president obama’s looks and there has been no reaction at all. I have no problem with their being a standard it just needs to be equally applied. Personally I think we should give people the benefit of the doubt when their comments can reasonably be construed as benign. If we want to go the full metal jacket politcallt correct route fine we just need the rules as to what you can and can’t say to be clearly set forth and then equally enforced regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual preference or whatever.

Sexual innuendo abounds since Eve first saw Adam w/o his fig leaf and asked where the snake had gone. Appreciation of women is not enhanced by getting your cojones caught in the revolving door of social correctness nor by women “getting their tits caught in a wringer”. Quotations are used here in deference to the Attorney General who made a similar quote over the phone as a threat to a female news figure when informed that Nixon had been implicated in Watergate. My point is that sexual humor and appreciation of the fairer sex should not devolve to keeping your wit shut just because someone has no sense of humor. Hell, I’m still trying to reconcile that I was sprinkled and not fully immersed when baptised and am going to hell for it according to my Baptist classmates in jr high.

It is hard to believe there is even a debate about this. I am for almost anything that would get Musberger out of the booth but this is beyond silly, it is disgusting. His remarks were not inappropriate to anyone but the overly sensitive control Nazis. Regardless of the NYT’s support of such efforts, including finding (shockingly) a supportive voice in academia for such trivial matters, nature will prevail and most humans will continue to recognize there is a difference between men and women. It may be regulated by our over zealous government, but interaction between the sexes will go on forever. If Brent had sought her phone number on national TV, or asked Herbie to go get his little blue pills from his hotel room, then ESPN/ABC might owe someone an apology. Ms Webb shows a lot more intelligence and class in her handling of this instance than all others involved. (Damn it is hard to take a pro-Musberger stance.) We have become a weeny nation in so many ways, and our slide is far from over.

Musburger has been around long enough and had enough dust-ups of one kind or the other that he should have been aware to not tread in that sort of territory, especially with a game of this magnitude and size of audience. But typical to his history Musburger coudn’t help himself. Because, Musburger has never met a microphone and spotlight he didn’t like.
His comments were creepy and his producer should have told him to knock it off but everyone on the ESPN crew was in shock due to the blowout.
What I find offensive is people running to his defense and using some sort of political, “Big Brother”-ish rhetoric to frame this as a debate between liberals and conservatives. Musburger has been a top-level national broadcaster for 40-ish years and he doesn’t need Rush Limbaugh or Tony Barnhart defending him.
He is a guy who compared John Carlos and Tommie Smith to the Nazi’s and he has never apologized for it. Gentlemen who used one of the world’s most popular sporting events to protest discrimination and inequality but Musburger found THAT offensive and still does to this day. Musburger shows off his dirty old man side and his employer apologizes and people think the apology is the is out of line!

My problem with Musburger during that game was his obvious rooting interest for Notre Dame. He almost wet himself when they called interference on that punt return. Then looked like a total moron when their ref on staff came on and told him it was the correct call. Just one example.

Why is there no outrage over Notre Dame faking their way into a coveted spot in the BCS finale? That was the most offensive part of Monday night to CFB fans. They couldn’t even give a good performance of acting like a contender, and they cost that poor LB a bunch of cash in the upcoming draft.

As the game progerssed, the talk became all about Alabama and how excellent they are, blah, blah….it seemed to me that there was a great effort to avoid or circumvent any discussion of Notre Dame’s exposed mediocrity. It was the invisable elephant in the room. Not to worry, though. Notre Dame will get another chance to wow the world soon enough.

I did listent to Herbie and Brentie for the game. Could not dial up Eli Gold who calls the Bama games. Even though I think Munson was the best and I miss that man, Eli does a very good job. ESPN is what you can get at your local convenience check line / register. His comments were inappropriate. After all their darling school was getting the freaking dog crap kicked out them. That was not a BCS game. Notre Dame was one very over-rated team and there courtesy of Holtz and Company. Their 2012 game history was to give up long drives, but stop teams in the red zone. Well, Bama had answer for that. Bama was so damn basic in that game it was unreal. A one back set and no power except inside the 10. Bama flat put a hat on them and drove their little ass in the ground! How many drives did Bama make in that game over 70 yards.
Bama took the Irish alleged legendary defense and used it against them. Brillant!!! But Herbie and Brentie could only lust after Bama star QBs mother and girlfrined. They did not do that for any Irish player. Why? Perhaps they were all ugly as sin. And perhaps those two could not understand the game.

What was missed in all of this politically correct bullshit was Manti Teo’s miserable portrayal of an award winning linebacker. It’s a damned shame that he missed that tipped ball that would have added to his legacy as an interception machine.

The collective world went to hell with the advent of the 24/7 news cycle. There is just not enough real news to satisfy the cycle so all the networks and real news outlets have to become “Inside Edition” or “TMZ”. There used to be a difference between the New York Times and the National Enquirer, now not so much.

No, Sulzberger just made it OK to tell only one side of the story. Modern news organizations are merely following the trail he blazed. Sure, most still only tell one side of the story, but there are a hell of a lot more outlets now, and they aren’t all on the same side anymore. Is it perfect? Hell no, but it is quite an improvement.

If I was the QB wanted the ball snapped when I needed it snapped as the play clock was running down, wanting to avoid a penalty to stop the clock, or to keep my center from snapping the ball too soon and there was a gift turnover to ND in my red zone, trying to run down the play clock & the game clock, points on the board, wanting to get out of the game, I’d think I could get my center’s attention on the next play. But McCarron is a very good QB and player, and I bet he has a much better view of the play clock than the position his center is in. Not too hard to figure that out.
As for Musburger and those who like to run up into the bleachers during a game, here is a tip. Buy a damn ticket and sit there. Then you can check out all the eye candy you want. But here is a clue for Musburger, expect to get your ass smacked by the woman, her boyfriend, husband, or father. If that was daughter, I’d hunt your ass up if you felt that as an ESPN announcer you could talk about her absent her presence. Musburger is a coward and a very poor announcer. But what do you expect from ESPN.
As for Eli Gold, he does a good job. As for Munson, I think I said he was the best. More than likely a man and a gentlemen like Munson would have the same view of Gold.

McCarron should not have shown up his center and acted the way he did. The game was in hand and he could have easily used a timeout. Jones should not have pushed McCarron. Plain and simple. The whole thing made for a very uncomfortable situation.
From what little I know about Munson, he and Eli aren’t in the same class. Munson is a legend. However, I don’t have huge problems with Eli. He’s called some big games, has made some good calls and can do it until he retires as far as I’m concerned. I don’t think they’ll ask me, though.
FWIW, Bama’s basketball announcer is very good. He’s mid-40s, but has an old-school style.
