Williams may be guilty of exaggeration, but at least he’s an official that acknowledges the problem and wants it fixed. This attitude would be a breath of fresh air in a lot of our “big football” states. The opposite extreme to this story is the situation at PSU. I don’t want everyone on a team painted with the same brush, but the brush should be applied where appropriate. If we would admit it, a lot of “thuggery” in the SEC has gone unacknowledged, treated lightly or actually covered up.

What value does the word “thug” bring to the table? It’s just another example of the way our media-driven world causes us to speak in hyperbole and exercise after the fact judgment on anyone and anything that may offend us.
If you bring 10,000 kids into a new situation when they came from crime and poverty, not all are going to act right. They deserve to be punished. But using the label “thug” just makes it easy to blur lines.
In other words, it doesn’t mean jack shit and “painting” doesn’t do anything.

That was a damned good discussion on that post last summer. More importantly, it demonstrates a primary strength of this blog—– regardless of how diverse the viewpoints, the discussion was conducted in a very civil manner….even if many of the posters who disagreed with me totally missed the point and were wrong. 🙂 Your point above that I am replying to shows you are coming around….thuggery is bad and should be called out regardless of color. Lump’em all together and kick their asses out (although I still suspect you would rather sit around a campfire, hold hands, and chant.)

Excellent question for which there is no clear answer. Some Richt observers think it was the dancing, not the towel waving, that did him in. Others think it was the combo aggravated by white people in the press box showing very limited dance moves with the mitigating factor being that Verne could not find, and wave, his drool towel. The remainder, of course, are always concerned that when and if he gains control, he will have lost control of losing control and who can argue with that?

During all the late nights at Grad Studies when in need of coffee at the Vend machine and out of change, it never occurred to me to beat up one of my fellow students and take his change. ( This is what I understood happened at Alabama recently).SI did a little research into players and crime. Interesting.

I have a friend who was raised in Brooklyn ,and he claims he never once ate lunch in the school luchroom because you had to pay a thug off to get in and another one to sit at a table. You had to pay a thug off to use the bathroom. You had to pay a thug off not to have your locker robbed….he said you needed one of those little change dispensers that vendors used to wear on their waist, as much as you needed pencils and paper. Thuggery starts early in the big city.

Harry first tried to take Mudcat’s Caprice without his permission. Harry said there was a “general practice among the circle of mascots and friends to share vehicles that actually have gas in them and will start.” That non-starter was okay because the indoor production facility wasn’t big enough to handle a full-size ’88 Caprice and a full complement of dancers. As a result, Harry was left with no alternative other than to take Caleb’s scooter that was out of gas but was easier to push than the Caprice

I was surprised at the number of Alabama fans on the boards trying to minimize the crimes of their 4 thugs. But after reading the UA school newspaper, the Alabama student body appears almost unanimous in the immediate expulsion of the four players. Can you just imagine if you had a son or daughter on campus? No way does the UA subject itself to further liability by allowing those four to remain on campus. I can’t understand why the players were not charged with aggravated assault or more serious crimes. After all, it was more than just a robbery.

What is the relative % in any populated area of crime rate; compare areas within a state,i.e., So. Fl versus Atl? Look not only at individuals convicted, but also at the crime rate, solved or unsolved. We have miles to go before comparing those who were prosecuted to the conviction rate, who had court-appointed barristers and who could pay, etc before you can take college sports or CFB to task.
The shit in Tuscaloosa is smelling up the SEC. Why weren’t they dismissed by the team and the student body? Those characters have no place on the team nor in the University. I feel badly for those students and team members who must be chafing at the suspention of criminals who mugged their fellow students. It lends credence to reports of pampering some players even though what they have done has no mitigating circumstances and they subborn outright forceful robbery.
BD, what in hell is going on at Bama Athletics? Is there any reason not to dismiss them all regardless of whether they cowardly attacked or waited? Any person who could get into their minds that it is without retribution or punishment that they could physically beat and endanger another student’s life in a robbery have long before deserted any societal mores and values that we hold one another against. They have admitted to it and you want to suspend and investigate?
My friends and alums at Bama are horrified as we would be at UGA. We kick them out rapidly just for robbery much less beating a student unconscious. Methinks the students at Bama are too petrified with fear to defend themselves from hoodlums. You are beginning to look like Tenn.

Even the Process has due process. Maybe they’re just in the transition phase that comes before announcements that they’ll (a.) all now have more time to spend with their families or (b.) be leaving for Montana soon

A coach can dismiss from the team for breaking his rules, but in this case Saban suspended them( d e). Dismissal from the University would require due process, but the Student Council can meet immediately since the perps are back in the student population and Campus Police were involved.. Did Richt wait for a court or the school to convict before he dismissed Crowell and Nick Marshal ?

No. I really didn’t mean the court system but there are (I imagine) procedural safeguards that need to be complied with by the Program and by UA.

So does it make any difference whether they were kicked off the team and/or kicked out of school this week or next or the week after? Don’t we applaud Mark Richt when he assists people like Nick Marshall make a soft landing? Why should we give Nick shit about probably trying to do the same thing?

Comparison of crimes don’t demonstrate that these hoodlums should get anything except shown the door. This type of crime doesn’t bode well for turning them lose into the student population again. What is the source of a deterrent there? Their consciences? Think not. Campus police can’t stand by every vending machine whether its used for food or used for obtaining money. Of course you could say that a camera is mounted in every machine, but these yahoos could care less, what was done is not a mistake in thinking, but instead a preplanned crime;- one after the other.
