Dannen said this move by the Big Ten could be “significantly impactful” on FCS budgets.
“To me, it’s a $500,000 budget hit, and that is significant,” Dannen said. “It impacts our ability to generate money in football. It closes the ranks, it closes us out a little bit more. I understand why it’s happening, but at some point in time, the owners of these institutions — not just stakeholders, I’m talking owners, the state of Iowa — at what point in time do they step in and say, ‘You know what, the interests of a few as such a disservice to the whole that we have to start thinking about the whole again.’
“Money transferred between state institutions is different than money being paid to someone outside the state of Iowa.”
That’s actually not a bad argument to make to a state legislature. I wonder what would happen if Iowa passed a law requiring its D-1 schools to continue scheduling football games with Northern Iowa. It sure wouldn’t make Jim Delany happy.

FCS schools should simply spend more to improve their financial condition. This evidently will work at all levels of government.

If your athletic department’s fiscal health hinges on big name football teams paying you to go to their stadium and get the crap beat out of you on a regular basis, then maybe you should consider getting out of college football altogether?
Then again, the far more likely scenario is that a lot of I-AA teams will just make the jump to I-A even if they’re in no way competitive enough to belong there.

Ding Ding Ding! Kennesaw State just announced its program this week and Georgia State is jumping to FBS this year. They see the writing on the wall for FCS schools and are making sure they don’t get left off the gravy train.

I have always thought that if you are going to play a FCS school it should be an in state school. Why help out some other states budget problems. We at least play GA Southern every so often. Tech on the other hand plays VMI, Wofford and until now would not play GSU.
