Meet Georgia’s latest entry in the Fulmer Cup sweepstakes:
Georgia reserve tight end Ty Flournoy-Smith was arrested Friday night on a misdemeanor charge of filing a false report of a crime.
University of Georgia police chief Jimmy Williamson said that Flournoy-Smith filed a police report with UGA in the last few days about stolen textbooks.
“He went through this whole story of his books being stolen,” Williamson said. “We started looking into it and it was determined that the books were not stolen. He had taken his own books down to a local book buying company and sold them back to them.”
Kid screwed up. The good news is that no scooters were involved.
The bad news is that Jimmy Williamson will always be Jimmy Williamson.
“As long as I’ve ever worked for the University of Georgia police, if somebody files a report of any crime and we designate resources to look into it and we conclude that these people knowingly falsely filed a report then we’ll prosecute, we’ll take out a warrant for filing a false report,” Williamson said.
Bad. Ass.
I figure we’re about one step away from this scene.

That was just flat stupid on Smith’s part. What exactly did he have to gain in this scenario? Did he have insurance on them? By now our staff should know Williamson is a badass mall cop in a UGA police uniform. Our players should be warned accordingly.

My guess is that players receive textbooks from UGA as part of their scholarships. So a player might sell his books, report them stolen, and have new books provided to him by the university to replace the “stolen” ones.

He likely wanted money and then an excuse for “losing” his books. The big issue here is why did he want or need money this bad.

Shit happens in life and he felt he needed the money. My question would be whether these were his current class books purchased for him by UGA. Sounds like it and that would constitute fraud. Hope not.

Don’t remember the Alabama players who were suspended a few years ago being prosecuted for a dang thing. A few suspensions but certainly no prosecutions in Tusksarelooserville. The UGA cops are a bunch of Barney Fifes and basically has been that way since the 60’s.

I got hammered one day at UGA in my sophomore year and sold my books back and didn’t remember, fortunately I had friends who knew what I did because they had tried to stop me otherwise I might have done the same thing, hopefully that’s not what happened here because their damn sure woyld have been no scieter on my part in that case. Stupidity yes, budding alcoholism yes, but no mens rea as the lawyers say.

I’m not sure why you think it is the “frat boys” with IPhones that are pushing the tech envelope textbook ripoff ….”but I beg to differ sir”. You are just not capturing a 375 page textbook by waving an IPhone and an app in front of it. And just what happens to the graphics that may be included with the text? If you want to copy a text book of any size you are setting up a 8MP camera on tripod, securing the proper lighting, building a box frame to support the book at the proper angle, and using glass to flatten the page. Save it to an SD card and run it through software that places the pages in numerical order and handles the graphics. It won’t be long before some kid figures out how to use the Samsung Galaxy 4 to hot spot and up load real time sports to their comrades tired of the continuing ESPN price increases. They will then run that feed to their 60″ wide screen. The Galaxy s4 is the real deal….

I’m pretty sure the Athens bookstores are run by the mafia anyway, who else could get away with routinely buying back $ 80 books for $ 8, back in the 90’s it was there way or the highway, you had no choice, now with the internet and technology making end arounds possible I wouldn’t be surprised if some people started getting kneecapped.

It is serious… perhaps not here at UGa but ripping off book bags to resell books for profit is a bitch per lost books and notes etc for the original owners. No small matter.
ACC is certainly not “Clarke County must be a combination of Utopia and Shangri-La.” Look at the roads and streets and you might remind yourself that Athens is one of the poorest counties per it’s population in the USA. No utopia sir.
