In the SEC, cousins can be tricky.

I have no idea what this observation from Mike Slive means:

Q: Along those lines, is the SEC going to stick with 14 members or is further expansion anywhere on the horizon?

A: In some ways 12 is ideal but at least 14 is sort of a cousin of 12. Sixteen is a distant relative. We’re actually still in the process of absorbing both of these schools into our scheduling, particularly on the football side. It’s hard to absorb one, let alone two.

Whut?

Now I understand why we can’t have a nine-game conference schedule.  They’re having too much trouble sorting out the family tree.

You know how they say people hear what they want to hear? I interpreted this as Mike saying he wants to kick TAMU and Mizzou back out.

I interpreted this to mean Mike Slive had one too many drinks.

Slive’s oblique reference to 16 makes me wonder if the SEC has already secretly decided to go to 16 but just not made the decision about which ones are going to be 15 and 16. That would also explain the reluctance to go to 9 conference games now. Slive wants to wait and do it when the league has 16 teams.

Can’t blame Slive for the math. Besides, do you think the ESPN contract was signed with a simple “Just add two”? Hell, no. ESPN has to pay for all the trouble it took to add those teams. It wasn’t simple, so they have to pay more for all our trouble and sacrifice and…….get the picture?

Meanwhile, would someone get a mathematician with a hand calculator into the SEC meetings and figure out a 9-game SEC schedule? Saban and Spurrier already have theirs figured out. You would have figured that Slive would have used the media,( esp. AJC pundits) aholes who have all the right and wrong answers depending on whether you ask them or not. What the heck, he can just grab one at Media Days.

The SEC family tree oughta be easy. You know you’re a redneck if:
Your family tree has only one branch.

Slive has been a major disappointment as Commissioner of the best football conference in America. He has lacked leadership, principles, and vision, imo. I can’t think of three qualities more important that the “head guy” should have so I feel he is a total failure. At the same time, not being qualified and lacking a spine seems to be in vogue these days. Certainly his election as Commissioner reflects on the electorate iself, which I think would be the Presidents of the 12 SEC schools at that point in time. No major surprise there either. But the money is pouring in so I guess no one in academia is about to call for his head.
