Bet they wish they had a Hutson Mason.

After noting Florida’s offensively challenged 2012 season, Paul Myerberg goes on to point out a potential Achilles heel for this year’s edition of the Gator offense:

What if Driskel (fingers crossed) goes down? With Jacoby Brissett off to N.C. State, the Gators are a little concerned about depth at the quarterback position. Neither of UF’s options for the backup spot, junior Tyler Murphy and redshirt freshman Skyler Mornhinweg, have attempted a pass in their respective careers. Driskel is a runner (408 yards), which gives Florida an added dimension on offense but opens the junior up to extra punishment – he missed one game last fall, against Jacksonville State, due to an ankle injury.

A little concerned?  Florida was eighth nationally in turnover margin in 2012, at +15.  More significantly, in the two games it played with a net negative turnover margin, it lost both.  If Driskel went down and Florida had to turn its offense over to somebody who’d never thrown a collegiate pass in anger before, Boom’s team would probably have to set a record in that category to compensate.

And yet they will be ranked ahead of us, the national media reallllly like them some Gators.

Where do you see them ranked pre-season? I’d guess they will be placed around 5th, with us coming in around 7th or 8th in the pre-season polls.

I see the Gators dropping one of the Georgia or Florida State games (obviously hope its us) and one of their two huge away games (South Carolina and LSU).

They have a pretty tough schedule when you throw in @ Miami and @ Mizzou the week after Baton Rouge.

      I see them as a 10-2 team, with 9-3 a higher probability than 11-1.

Just go back and review their bowl game. You might look at their schedule and come up with a few more teams added to your list.

Some of them, especially those who were discharged as Section 8’s, just can’t bear the thought of being Section 37F-ed. It’d be bad enough even with Oakleys.

There are a LOT of teams that wish they had Hutson Mason. He would be the starter many places. I’m still not totally convinced he will be with the Dawgs in the fall.

Murray goes down in second game of the season and is lost for the rest of it. Dawgs have no real experienced QB in fold, even though they have numbers at the position…even have some numbers who have been in the dawghouse for awhile. Gators are chomping in JAX for that to happen.
Sorry, but I just can not walk that far out about the Gators. Let them dwell on the “what ifs”.
The question is does UGA have a QB that can move past Murray at the start of the season. Murray is a good QB, but…fill in the blank. If the Dawgs O line gets depth (that be skill and coaching), then some TBs and QBs will play alot. Gators…same situation.
Think Florida will remember their last game…bowl loss to Louisville. Will not make that mistake in ’13. Driskel is a player. Probably learned something in that bowl loss, along with his top notch OC.
East will be a bitch in 13 for UGA, Carolina, Florida, Vandy, MIzzo…you had better have a very good O line to win. See Bama. Driskel and Murray are experienced…that helps to stay healthy, but…what if.

You were doing this “Gators are so confident!” routine last season, right before 17-9. “Ready to walk into Atlanta and compete for a national championship,” you said about them, or something like that.

Jarvis Jones and Malcolm Mitchell disagreed with your assessment.

Here’s mine on Florida: No playmakers. ….And we’re done.

      • Dog in Fla

“Here’s mine on Florida: No playmakers. ….”

And boom goes the ************* dynamite!

      • Dawg in Beaumont

A related point: if the national media isn’t going to focus on how we hold the all-time series record against the gators, or we’ve won the last 2 vs. the gators, can the new meme be about how evenly matched the series is? Consider that for the last 9 years we are 4-5 vs. them.

Don’t bother yourself with “what if?”. What now and what’s next are far more important.

FU is in deep shit at QB. If we lose Murray, most fans will lament the loss and say “Let’s go, Hutson” or name another of our capable QBs. If FU loses Driskel, they got nothin’ but wishes for the rest of their season.

Murray will make it 3 in a row this year because that game will be the easiest matchup for our D. What QB in our history can make the same brag of 3 in a row vs FU?

Other judgement is reserved for the beginning of the season and where everything lies before gametime.

“If we lose Murray,” and can’t find him –

      Two words: Futon Bauta. Single-Wing.

      • AthensHomerDawg

Interesting kid with an interesting name. Futon is an Albanian name for a boy and Bauta is certainly Cuban. I read somewhere he had a Cuban heritage. Kinda fun to watch this guy develop. Wish him well.

“On September 21, 2008, the Miami Dolphins used a version of the single-wing offense (specifically the Wildcat offense) against the New “England Patriots on six plays, which produced five touchdowns (four rushing and one passing) in a 38-13 upset victory,[28] after its successful adoption on the college and high school level by several teams.”
