Evidently yesterday’s meme of the day was Mike “you never sausage a place” Bobo’s contentment with being in Athens. (Now we know McGarity’s secret weapon in contract negotiations.) But in the midst of the sausage fest, Marc Weiszer caught an interesting quote from Richt about his offensive coordinator:
“Mike and I have worked together for so long now that if I study red zone and he studies red zone and we compare notes and we watch it separately, it’s about 90 percent identical,” Richt said. “It’s not like that I need to have a lot of input. There might be times I slip a little something to him on the side and say, ‘Hey, if you like it, good. If you don’t, that’s fine, too.’ I know what it’s like to be an offensive coordinator and to call plays when your head coach is kind of the guy you’ve replaced as the play-caller. I know it can be tough at times, but Mike’s handed everything really well.”
That’s the sound of a man who’s comfortable. In fact, as Emerson notes, it sounds like Richt’s been more comfortable with Bobo than Bobo’s been comfortable with Bobo.
Bobo joked that his first year at Georgia he felt like a graduate assistant in the game-planning room. Richt was not only the offensive coordinator, but also a former college quarterback. Twelve years later, and five seasons into his tenure as offensive coordinator, Bobo said he has a much better comfort level — but not because Richt ever limited him. For instance, the wrinkles that Georgia has tried the past few years (the spread offense, the pistol, the no-huddle) it was mainly Bobo.
All in all, that’s a relationship that’s not ending any time soon. If you’re the guy I sat in front of last year at the Auburn game, I’m sorry to tell you that.

Stripling’s daughter was in my class years ago when they had a small town small grocery store. Their original big store (between Albany/Cordele, near Warwick and L. Blackshear) branched out years ago between Cordele and Americus (several years ago we had a 50th class reunion within 3 miles of that store) , but I didn’t know they had branched out that far north. Their extra hot sausage can only be eaten in small spoonfuls placed in an omelette. Paula had them on as regular advertisers in the last few years.
The Striplings are wonderful Sowega people who never got away from their small town habits and country friends. We continue to see and visit with them, but don’t get by their store often enough.
My conservative classmates do not know the Cojones persona.

I live in California and my father lives in North Florida. I have him send me some sausage from Stripling’s every year. He makes a point to stop by there on his way to games. He once took a Harley for a ‘test drive’ (RT 150 miles) to Stripling’s just for some sausage.

It’s amazing how good an offensive coordinator can look when you finally have a well-coached offensive line and skilled people who create matchup problems all over the field. It doesn’t hurt to have a QB who knows the playbook inside and out.

Our offensive line was pretty young last year and we have had a couple skill players that weren’t that bad a few years ago. Stafford, Moreno, AJ Green…. I was in the fire Bobo crowd, but he has proved me wrong the last two years.

I think Bobo has definitely turned the corner as a coordinator. I never questioned his ability to coach QBs or recruit. My point was that o-line grew up especially after the USCjr debacle. The difference in our skilled players today vs. 2008 is really in the quantity of guys who can make explosive plays

Others have said they were wrong, but not that emphatically. You’re a good Dawg and person to boot for not letting your ego get in the way of reality. Bet you enjoy those games more, also.
It’s funny how, after so much sturm and drang, names aren’t associated with side-taking any more. All Dawgs seem to be barking along the same fan trail now. It’s as if someone opened the kennel gates to watch the litter run around and chew roots, chase butterflies and piss on other school’s pickup tires (partially assimilated from Jody, a Sowegan who was President Carter’s WHCOP, who is the only man to put the Wash Press Corps down and have them laugh about it).

Bobo killed a lot of my past complaints the past year. The only one he’s left me with is use of the TE. For a man who played under Donnan, and with the ability we can bring in at that position, I wish we’d use our TEs more and use more multiple TE sets.

Don’t know if you’re talking about this year or last year. Last year we had Orson & AWhite in on almost every down. This year, as the running game improved, we started leaning more on the TEs as the middle opened up on play-action. Even then though, we had Bennett, Brown, King & Mitchell at receiver, and I’d be surprised if Bobo didn’t think they were more reliable targets than Lynch (1st year starting) and Rome (1st year ever).
So next year, do you favor Mitchell, Bennett, Wooten & Conley — or do you take some of them off the field to get Rome & Lynch in? Frankly — and I think we’ll agree here — this is the kind of problem I *like* having.

Throwing to the TE against uT CMR’s first SEC away game was huge. Utilize the TE and the fb. P-44 Haynes caught uT in a cover 4 and lead to one of Munson’s greatest calls.

I was at a game watch party in Austin for the SECC. I think we ran something that didn’t work, like a draw play with Gurley up the middle for no gain. The next table over, this girl who was easier on the eyes than on the ears blurted out, “Gah! That play never works!”
I looked at her and said, “Sweetie, that play works a hell of a lot. That’s why we’re in this game, and not Florida or South Carolina.”

These folks amaze me. I’ve been following Georgia football since Herschel and this is easily the most prolific offense we’ve ever had, along with the most efficient in the country (7 yards/play). And there we were, going blow-for-blow with the #1 defense in the country in the SEC championship, and people are bitching about playcalling. I felt like I’d been slipped crazy pills.

Well let’s see. The receptionist at my wife’s office calls me “Hon”. So does my lawyers paralegal, my doctors nurse, and the cashier at the Kroger where we sometimes shop. My grandmother often called me “Hon”. Maybe that’s why I don’t let it bother me. What does annoy me is being called “Bud”. The parts guy sometimes calls me “Bud”. ” New project? What do ya need today “Bud”?” On game day when I am sent forth to fill the honey do list from my bride I run into the shelf stockers at the grocery store. “Help you find something “Bud”? What do ya need “Bud”?
In private, I often call my bride “sweetheart”, “princess”, or “babygirl”. I did call her “Babe” ONCE in public…. at a mixed gathering no less. Uhmmm…. I have never repeated that.

It went over far better than “moron” or “dipshit,” both of which were on the very tip of my tongue and almost certainly would have been used if she were of the other sex.
I get your point and I’m not trying to justify my use of the term. It was a heat of the moment thing, and I made the decision to do the rhetorical equivalent of running off the road rather than veer into oncoming traffic.

I may have been that guy sitting behind you at the Auburn game. While I do harbor some ill will towards Bobo for the rough early years of play calling(2007 South Carolina game comes to mind), I do think that he is a fine offensive coordinator and that he is an excellent quarterbacks coach. Most of my comments during the Auburn game were meant to rile up my buddy sitting next to me that has been carrying the Bobo torch since day one. I was also very drunk.

I know what you mean. When we torched Auburn at home in 2011, I jokingly started yelling “fire Bobo” and “fire Richt” but I was being sarcastic and laughing at the “fire Bobo” crowd who have annoyed me the past few years. I think people got it at the time b/c my section was laughing. That was such a beautiful game.
